The Unpopular Road – The Road to Life

ID-100186694We are living in a time in which there are many who are rejecting the truth of God. Many examples can be seen which involve the masses who have turned their back on God, to embrace secular humanism.  It is the rapidity of such change in the world culture that brings to light the scripture which can be found in Matthew 7:13-14.  It simply reads:

(NIV) “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.”

In this chapter, Jesus was teaching on various topics, which included the principle of the wide and narrow pathway.  What Jesus mentions is the unfortunate fact that there will be many who will choose the opposite of life which is eternal damnation.  1 Corinthians 2:14 says, (NIV) “The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit.”

It is the individual who is entrenched in their sin that does not accept the commands and precepts of God.  The thing about sin is, sin within itself is pleasurable and enticing. However, the joy that can be found in a sinful lifestyle only lasts for a season.  Sin not only brings pleasure, but negative consequences are a result of practicing a life that is sinful.  When Jesus refers to the wide and narrow pathway, He is essentially making the declaration that most will choose the path that goes to destruction. Only a few will choose the path that leads to life.  Why is this so?  Why is it that the majority will walk in a path that is more populous than those who do not?

The answer lies within a few considerations:

1. It is easier to walk in the way of the majority – Anti-conformity has become less and less in the sense of deciding to live for Christ in a godless society.  The truth is, authentic Christians who not only claim Christianity but live it has become less common.  Now, pressure from a growing trend of those who are secular humanists and who believe in the “live and let live” mentality, has been applied to those not willing to bend.  One reason why the gateway to destruction is so broad, is because the road to pleasure and acceptance from society is easier.  It isn’t popular to stand up for Jesus Christ and it never was.  Even more so now, taking a stance against “gay marriage”, abortion, and other sins that have become socially acceptable puts one on the fringes of society. However, Jesus understood that even if society chooses to perish, the way to life would yield eternal security in addition to a better life on Earth.

2. Sin is enjoyable – As mentioned, living in a life of sin appeals and pleases the flesh.  If sin didn’t feel good, then most wouldn’t engage in it.  It is our sinful nature which calls out to us to fulfill the desires of the flesh.  Often times, sin entices us through temptation.  As James 1:14 says in the NIV, “but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed.” Sin resides within us because of the original nature passed down from Adam & Eve.  It is the sin that brings pleasure in the perspective of one who is walking in ungodliness.  There are many who entertain and even allow the pleasures of the flesh to direct their lives – however it eventually leads to a destructive lifestyle.  The results of living in a life of sin is one of a depraved mind, a seared conscience, and ultimately a spiritual and physical death.

3. The lies of satan are accepted as truth – Satan is a crafty individual who understands how to use various tactics to deceive.  John 8:44 describes satan as the “Father of lies.” In fact, in the very beginning satan lied and deceived Adam & Eve.  In Genesis 3:4-5, satan in the form of a serpent is speaking to Adam & Eve.  In the exchange, satan attempts to manipulate them by twisting the word of God.  God’s original command to Adam & Eve was not to eat the fruit from the tree of The Knowledge of Good and Evil, or they would die.  However, here is what satan says in response to this: (NIV) “The serpent said to the woman, “You surely will not die! “For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” Satan told a half truth when he said that they would not die.  He was correct in that Adam & Even would not die after eating the fruit.  However, what he did not say was that there would be a spiritual death that would be the result of their disobedience. Satan often twists God’s word in order to deceive those who are willing to accept his lies. As a result, many walk in a path that is full of those who are also deceived.

So, these three elements play into the reason for a wide path to destruction. As the Bible says, there are few that find the path to life.  Most follow the trends of a world that is living in sin, however there is a cost that comes with disobedience.  Jesus Christ died for that cost, so that you wouldn’t have to pay it.  Satan will not tell you the damage that can be done when you sin and remain in disobedience.  Instead, he withholds the truth and speaks lies so that he can ensnare those who are willing to follow.

All of us have a choice of whether to surrender to God through Jesus Christ, or to remain in our sinfulness.  The reward for turning to Christ is life and life abundantly. You have been redeemed because of Jesus Christ, but it is up to you to accept His gift of salvation.  You can live under the grace, protection, and love of God once you have turned from your wicked ways.  Walking in the popular path is what brings pain, confusion, and chaos.  Choose life, and choose the less popular road to life.

Allowing Jesus to Lead You As the Good Shepherd

ID-100127940In October of 2005, American Idol winner Carrie Underwood released the popular song “Jesus take the wheel.”  It was a song that was played on various radio stations and was downloaded repeatedly.  This Grammy award-winning song received the status of double platinum in the U.S., and was certified as Gold in Canada.  It was a song that provoked the notion that we all need the guidance of Jesus, but we must surrender in order for our lives to find direction. In the chorus of this song the lyrics are as follows:

“Jesus, take the wheel
Take it from my hands
Cause I can’t do this on my own”

“I’m letting go
So give me one more chance
To save me from this road I’m on
Jesus, take the wheel”

Like this song, the scripture of Psalm 23 which is a familiar passage reminds all of us that we need the guidance of God in our lives. The Bible makes it clear that the Lord is indeed the Good Shepherd over the flock of those who are willing to follow Him.  In the first two verses of Psalm 23 it says in the NIV, “The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters,” The key word in this scripture is “lead.” The Lord is there to lead us and guide us.

If you read further it says in verse 3, “he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake.” We should look at God as one who will lead us and guide us. Often times we attempt to steer or guide our own lives into a certain direction. Have you ever heard of the phrase, “I am the captain of my own ship?” Those who operate in such a manner are destined for failure, because they are leading themselves without the one who can steer them away from calamity.  

In John 10, Jesus is speaking to Pharisees about the concept of being the Good Shepherd.  In the beginning verses, Jesus gives the example that anyone who tries the enter the sheep pen by any other means is a thief and a robber.  He then goes on to say that the sheep know the voice of the shepherd and they follow, but the voice of a stranger they will not follow. In verse 7 Jesus says, (NIV) “Therefore Jesus said again, “Very truly I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep.”  In verses 14-15 He says, “I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me— just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep.”

What Jesus is saying is, that He is the good shepherd.  He is the one who leads, guides, and protects those who are within His fold.  Our lives have meaning and direction when we are willing to submit to the leadership of Christ.  There are so many voices that are calling out to us, trying to get us to veer off course. However, if you are in Christ and have accepted Him as Lord and Savior, then you will learn to hear the voice of the Good Shepherd through relationship.

Everyday, voices in the world call us with the attempt to get our attention.  From the media, to sources on the internet, to those within our lives.  These are sources that are vying for our attention with the effort to lead and command a following.  The fact is, our world has become built on the element of “following” others.  For example, Twitter has etched the word “follow” in the minds of many which has caused the campaign of “Follow us on Twitter.” This isn’t to say that social networking is a bad thing, however the goal shouldn’t be to follow after the things of this world.

Instead, our lives should be centered around a Holy God who leads us and guides us.  It is God who assists us in avoiding the pitfalls of life. Seeking after the things of this world and following the order set in place, will always lead to confusion and eventual ruin. However, as verse 3 says in Psalm 23, the Lord guides us along the right paths for His name sake.  If we are willing to give up our own way, and acknowledge God and His sovereignty, then He will guide us on His righteous path.

The path of a sin filled life is one of calamity.  There are so many in our society today that are seeking peace and attempting to lead their own lives. However, many do not find peace but they find trouble.  Instead of finding a lack of peace, Psalm 23 verse 2 says that the Lord leads us beside still waters.  This means, God leads us in the way of peace.  To see a body of water that is still is to focus on an entity that is calm or peaceful.

There is one major attribute of the Good Shepherd that we should not overlook and that is, His willingness to find us where we are. In Luke 15 verses 3-7, Jesus is speaking to tax collectors, sinners, and Pharisees when He gives what is called the “Parable of the Lost Sheep.” In this parable He says in verses 4-7:

(NIV) “Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.’ I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.” 

This is what the Good Shepherd does for all of us.  He seeks to find us because we are lost in our sin.  While there will be those that remain in their sin and will be lost, God never stops looking for each individual. The invitation to receive salvation and to be welcomed into the fold is open to all.  As the above scripture points out, the Good Shepherd will leave the rest of the flock to go after the one who is lost.

That is how much God loves you and I.  He loved you so much that He sent Jesus Christ to die on the cross for your sins. It is in that act of love that we have the opportunity to be brought back to God through connection with Christ.  Are you lost and wandering in the ways of this world?  Have you tried every method to achieve peace and stability only to find that nothing works? The best way to find peace and stability is to accept Christ as your savior.  The Good Shepherd, He is waiting for you.

Your Debt Was Paid on Credit Through Jesus Christ

The credit card has become a common means to purchase goods.  In America and even around the world, the credit card is a useful tool to not only pay in expediency but to also purchase and pay later. It was designed so that the consumer could purchase an item while simultaneously allowing the debt that they owe to be paid for by the institution that they are borrowing from.  However, there is a catch as it relates to credit card usage.

The use of any credit card will involve the following stipulations:

1. Every lending institution offers an interest rate –  This means that upon purchase, the lender applies interest which is based on the fact that the borrower is using their service. You can think of interest as a surcharge that is instituted throughout each month of the billing cycle. An interest rate gives the lender a percentage of money in return.  If a person’s creditworthiness is exceptional then they will benefit from a lower interest rate which means the lender yields less of a return.  However a higher interest rate is based on a person’s lack of creditworthiness, meaning that the lender will earn more in interest.

2. The consumer must pay the lender back for the debt owed – Upon every purchase, the institution expects that the borrower pay them back in full for the service rendered.

While a credit card may be a useful tool in a moment of emergency or even convenience, it can be dangerous to ones financial health depending on how it is used. If you look at the credit card in its essence, it is nothing more than an opportunity for lenders to take advantage.  While you pay and owe a debt, they incur revenue from the interest rate and your debt that is paid.  However, there is one such individual who does not operate as a common lender does, and that is Jesus Christ.

In 2 Corinthians 5:21, the Apostle Paul states the following about Jesus Christ:

(NIV)“God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” 

Jesus Christ was not only given as a sacrifice in the place of you and I, but He essentially became the sin that emanates from our very existence.  All of us were born into sin because of the disobedience of Adam & Eve.  As a result, we carry the same lineage that was passed down through their actions.  The bad news is that because of our lineage, we have become products of Adam & Eve which also means that we inherit the consequences because of our sinful nature.  The consequences are that of a life that is destined for destruction because of our sinful state.  However, there is great news for you and the rest of humanity.

There is a term which is called “The 2nd Adam.” As the Bible records, Adam did not follow God’s original order which was not to eat from the tree of the Knowledge of Good & Evil.  However, because Eve ate from the tree and Adam followed her, sin entered into the world through Adam & Eve but primarily because of Adam’s disobedience.  So, as a result, sin became a by-product of Adam’s actions which set in motion the consequences of sin.  The term, “The 2nd Adam” comes into play when Jesus Christ is introduced as the savior of the world’s sin.

Essentially, Jesus is called the 2nd Adam because He is the alternative to the 1st Adam. To get a better picture, the Apostle Paul explains the difference between the first human which was Adam and Jesus Christ.  In Romans 5: 12-17 Paul says the following:

(NIV) “Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned — To be sure, sin was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not charged against anyone’s account where there is no law. Nevertheless, death reigned from the time of Adam to the time of Moses, even over those who did not sin by breaking a command, as did Adam, who is a pattern of the one to come. But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many! Nor can the gift of God be compared with the result of one man’s sin: The judgment followed one sin and brought condemnation, but the gift followed many trespasses and brought justification. For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God’s abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ!”

What Paul is saying in the above scripture is that death and condemnation are the result of the 1st Adam or the original human who sinned.  It is because of Adam’s disobedience that we are all born into sin.  This means, our destiny before Jesus Christ was to accept eternal damnation because of our sinful state.  However, once Jesus Christ came and was sacrificed on the cross for our sin, it was His death and resurrection that turned the tide of the original condemnation.  In the above scripture, it is apparent that Jesus is the one who gives life rather than death.

So, the principle of “The 2nd Adam” is that Jesus Christ broke the chain of sin and condemnation when He died on the cross.  It was because He became sin for us and he took my debt and yours, we no longer have to live in condemnation nor are we doomed to destruction.  Just as the lending institution takes the payment of what we wish to purchase, Jesus Christ has done the same thing.  The difference however between lending institutions and Jesus Christ is that we are not obligated to pay back the debt.

Creditors have the position of receiving your pay once the billing cycle begins so they can be paid back (with interest) in return for their services.  However, the great thing about Jesus is that He paid a debt that you and I owe.  Since we were all born into sin, the original judgment was and is that we would be condemned.  However, the alternative is that Jesus Christ became the substitute for the debt that we owe.  The Bible says in Romans 3:22 that through faith in Jesus Christ we are made righteous.

You have an opportunity to be made righteous because of Christ.  We are not saved by works or trying to be a “good person”.  We are saved by grace and every human has an opportunity to be saved.  As long as humanity remains in its sinful nature and disobedience, then of course we shall not experience an escape from destruction.  While Christ’s sacrifice took the debt that you and I owe, it is still up to us to make a decision to repent.  By repenting of our sin and turning away from it, then the power of sin is no longer effective in our lives.

If you haven’t accepted Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior, take the time to accept this gift of life.  It doesn’t cost you anything to accept this gift.  The only thing you must do is ask for forgiveness, turn from your sin and live a life that is pleasing to God.  The gift of life has already been paid for on credit through Christ.  In return, you will have a life that is full of abundance and eternal security.  Choose life by accepting this precious gift. For those of us who have already accepted it, we are the beneficiaries of this gift of life. It is open to all who will receive.  Choose Jesus Christ and find out what this gift of life can afford to you if you are willing to accept it.

Jesus Christ – The Solid Foundation

ID-10078699When building a house, there must be attention to detail. Each part of the house from the inside out, should be built with a focus on structural integrity.  From the walls, to the flooring, to the external siding of the home – there are many pieces to a home which must be integrated for it to be habitable. However, the most important part of any home or even building is that of its foundation.

A foundation as it concerns any building or structure is the element that provides stability. Using the example of a house, a good foundation is one that is rooted underground which allows the structure to withstand not only the test of time but also external forces (i.e. rain, wind). A solid foundation is one that has the ability to uphold the weight of the structure, which means that it is not easily burdened.  Conversely, a building or house that does not have a firm foundation is one that is vulnerable.

If a foundation is not properly rooted or sturdy then it is likely that the structure will collapse or face some sort of damage.  As a result, those that reside within the structure are at risk of injury and even death if crumbling occurs.  Thus, having the appropriate foundation for any structure will prevent the decaying process which means that each resident is safe from internal or external calamity.

Our lives also need a firm foundation, but in the spiritual sense.  Just as any home or building requires a sturdy foundation to remain free from structural damage, we must also incorporate the appropriate foundation in our lives. That foundation is The Rock, or Jesus Christ.  In Matthew 7: 24-27, Jesus is speaking to a crowd when he teaches by giving a parable.  He is teaching on the principle of the wise and foolish builders. However, throughout chapter 7 of Matthew, Jesus teaches on various principles which includes judging others, asking and knocking, true and false prophets, true and false disciples, and the wide and narrow gate. It is only after teaching these principles that Jesus alludes to the parable of the wise and foolish builders. In verses 24-27 Jesus says the following:

(NIV)“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.” 

In this passage, Jesus illustrates by giving a comparison of two individuals. The first individual he mentions is a person who built their house on a solid foundation (In this case a rock). Based on the solid foundation, the individual’s house was able to withstand the external threats because of what it was built upon.  On the flip side, the other individual who built their house, did so on sand.  As a result, the house “fell with a great crash” because the foundation was vulnerable.

There are a lot of foundations that the world offers to all of us.  Many attempt to build their lives on wealth or material gain, social status, sex, pleasure, drugs, and a whole host of falsities.  Such foundations only lead to spiritual and physical ruin. That is because a foundation that is rooted in temporary pleasure will eventually lead to a collapse.

Jesus Christ is the best foundation that you and I can build our lives upon.  He is the one that gives stability and direction in life.  Satan will not give you insight into the damage that is done when you build your life on a shaky or vulnerable foundation. Everyday, millions attempt to surround their lives with foundations that are weak and unstable. As a result, their lives begin to crumble because the foundation they live upon cannot withstand the weight or the external influences that occur.

In Acts chapter 4, the Apostles Peter and John are seized and brought before the Sanhedrin Council for preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ. While standing before the council, Peter gives the following proclamation in defense of Jesus Christ in verses 9-12:

(NIV) “If we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a man who was lame and are being asked how he was healed, then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed. Jesus is “‘the stone you builders rejected, which has become the cornerstone.’’ Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.”

What Peter meant was that Jesus Christ is the cornerstone for all of humanity. If you look through the book of Matthew, you will see that Jesus was rejected by the world despite being the actual remedy for the sins of the world.  As Peter said, salvation cannot be found in anyone else.  Jesus Christ is the only one who can save because He paid the ultimate sacrifice.

The word “cornerstone” is meant to denote the piece that upholds every structure. Jesus Christ was given the name of “cornerstone” because He is the one who holds every life together despite the external influences that may arise.  Going back to the example of a building or a home, it is the very concept of having a firm foundation that Christ embodies.  Without a cornerstone or foundation that is firm, then the entire structure folds from the inside out, or from the outside in.

Is your life built on the foundation of Jesus Christ?  Or are you searching through the world to find solace and stability? The world cannot give you the type of structure that you are in need of.  In fact, the structure or system that the world provides is ever-changing. It is designed to ensnare all of its followers, just to leave them in ruins at the end of it all. Various laws and measures that are passed do not incorporate stability.  In fact, much of the governmental structures are failing because they are not built upon the one and true foundation which is Jesus Christ.

However, even outside of governmental corruption, there are many who choose to plan their lives on their own foundations.  The fact is, you and I cannot build a foundation that is solid enough to withstand the changes of life. Only in Christ Jesus can you have a life that is stable and secured.  If you have not accepted Jesus in the pardon of your sins, take the time to release your sin before Christ and turn from your wicked ways. Only then will your soul be secured, and your life will be built upon The Rock which is Jesus Christ.

True Surrender – Giving Up to Gain

Most who have seen a white flag being raised, know it to be a symbol of surrender. The white flag has been used for centuries as a means to signify the end of a conflict by giving up one’s quest to achieve victory.  It is the admittance that one no longer has the will to fight and that the adversary that they have fought against is superior.

In our lives, we too are in a battle.  Spiritually, you and I are caught between the enemy of our soul (Satan) and the love of a Holy God who wishes to commune with us in a relationship.  Every day a war is waged for our mind, our freedom, and our eternity.  Whether you realize it or not, your eternity is constantly being decided each day that you live.  Whether you will spend it in God’s presence in Heaven, or in eternal damnation and separation with Satan in Hell – the choice you and I make can determine where we will spend our spiritual life after a physical death.

In Luke 9: 23-24 (NIV), Jesus is talking to His Disciples when he says:

“Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it.”

To follow Christ and to follow God’s will, you must do as Jesus said in verse 23, which is to “deny yourself”.  Jesus uses the words, “take up their cross daily” which means to crucify the flesh and to bear the weight of the call into the body of Christ.  He uses the imagery of the cross, because when Jesus was crucified He died so that our sins could be forgiven. After His death, He rose again which represents new life.  Galatians 5:24 says  in the NIV, “Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.” So, we are to crucify our flesh by submitting ourselves to God daily.

The crucifixion of one’s flesh or self-denial is among one of the hardest things that we as humans can do.  It is due to our sinful nature that our flesh is proud and unwilling to yield to the Spirit of God.  Romans 7:18 says in the NIV, “For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out.” It is because of our sinful nature which was passed down by Adam & Eve, that we are unable to surrender without opposition.

Daily, there are many examples of those who fight in order to maintain what is believed to be “freedom” or “control”.  However, with all of the chaos that our world portrays, there is hardly any freedom or control that comes when we fail to surrender to God. Much of the distress that is shown in our society, is because of unrepentance and pride. Humanity in its fleshly nature is too proud to surrender itself to God.  A great example of pride is that of the common atheist.

Atheists are those who stand on the notion that God does not exist because there isn’t concrete evidence of His existence.  However, the element of pride enters the picture because those who are atheists would rather avoid accountability to someone who is higher.  Essentially, the idea that someone is higher than humanity is absurd in the mind of someone who doesn’t believe. As a result, a life without accountability is lived – however the danger in living as such is that consequences from sin result in both a physical and spiritual death.

Romans 8:7 says in the NIV, “The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so.” Since we are born into sin, then the art of surrender does not come easily.  To surrender, one must be willing to relinquish their pride, and admit that they themselves are a sinner. The difficult part is acknowledging any wrongdoing which is usually concealed through active denial and a continuation of sin.  However, just as Jesus said to deny ourselves, there are two principles that He also references when we are at the crossroads of a decision.

After Jesus gives the command to deny oneself and take up their cross on a daily basis, Jesus also utters the phrase, “For whoever wants to save their life will lose it”. To save one’s life means to believe that they are in control, or that they are their own savior. Secular humanism involves the thought that humanity has the ability to reason and conjure up solutions outside of any other deity (in this case God).  It is the refusal to admit that one needs a savior or that one must bow in a surrendered position.

When Jesus mentioned the above phrase, He meant that anyone who was adamant about believing in their own ability to save would eventually lose their life.  We cannot save ourselves because the remedy for salvation is Jesus Christ.  If we as humans could save ourselves from destruction, then much of the chaos we have seen throughout the existence of life would have been solved a long time ago.  However, it is because of the sin that remains within humanity, that we have mass casualties in war, violence that is uncalled for, injustice in societies around the world, and other sins which are a result of human pride.

However, Jesus offers the remedy in a second phrase when He says, “but whoever loses their life for me will save it.” What He means is that in order to receive salvation, the element of surrender must come into play.  To lose one’s life in this context means, to give up their own way of living and thinking, to surrender everything to God through Jesus Christ.  The reward of surrender is a life of stability, peace, and, of course, a life of eternal security with God. 

To lose your life as Jesus says, is to give up everything for the cause of Christ.  When Jesus called the original Disciples, he beckoned them from the lives that they had already known.  Many of them were entrenched in their occupations and family lives. However, the call of Jesus was one that meant leaving everything behind to follow Him. In doing so, all of His Disciples were used mightily to accomplish the great commission. Even Judas who was the traitor who sold Jesus for 30 pieces of silver, he too was used in order to accomplish the crucifixion of Christ. Had the Disciples refused their calling, they would not have furthered the Gospel of Jesus Christ during their time or in future generations.

God is calling you to a life that is surrendered and free from the power of sin. There are so many tragedies and acts of sin that are plaguing our society today.  In the mind of the person who is unrepentant, they can’t seem to figure out why so many things are occurring in our world.  However, once your life is surrendered to God through Jesus Christ, then and only then will your eyes see the truth of why our world is the way it is. You will also be secured eternally, and your life will be a living testament of the power of a good and Holy God. Wave the white flag, and give your life to Christ to experience a life that is made new.

Choosing Not to Bow Down

On May 22, 2015, Ireland became the first nation in the world to recognize “same-sex marriage” as legal.  Voters turned out in overwhelming acceptance to vote for the referendum to make it the law of the land to allow homosexuals to marry.  It is also said that Ireland is a majority Catholic nation, and yet the vote was in favor of what appears to be a rapid change in what was once a social stigma.  The United States is another country that is also moving towards full legalization of “gay marriage”.  In June, the Supreme Court of the United States will decide once and for all if it is Unconstitutional to institute a ban on “gay marriage”.

The issue of homosexuality along with the acceptance of other sins seems to be troubling.  For those of us who are in Christ, we must be aware of the changing times but we must not accept what the world has called “good” and “righteous”.  We are already seeing Biblical prophecy being fulfilled.  In Romans 1: 18-32, the Apostle Paul speaks to the wrath and punishment that God has and will inflict upon those who choose to live in a godless manner.  Paul’s words are quite prophetic because his words penetrate into today’s reality. In Romans 1: 21-24 (NIV) Paul says:

“For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles.Therefore, God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. They exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.”

If you read further in Romans 1, you will see that the blatant sinfulness that was committed during the time of Paul led to further destruction.  However, these things that Paul mentions didn’t just happen during his lifetime, but the very things Paul mentions in 26-31 are happening today.  We are living in a global society that has now chosen to reject the very decrees of God and accepted secular humanism as truth and a way of living.  However, those who are in Christ should not bow down to this world system.

As an example of not bowing down, there is a familiar passage of scripture that involves Daniel and the three Hebrew boys. Most who know this story, remember the exchange that Daniel along with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego had with King Nebuchadnezzar.  In Daniel chapter 3, we see that King Nebuchadnezzar has erected a golden image in his likeness.  This was an image that was to be worshiped by all of the people within the nation of Babylon. In verses 4-6 it says:

“Then a herald cried aloud: “To you it is commanded, O peoples, nations, and languages, that at the time you hear the sound of the horn, flute, harp, lyre, and psaltery, in symphony with all kinds of music, you shall fall down and worship the gold image that King Nebuchadnezzar has set up; and whoever does not fall down and worship shall be cast immediately into the midst of a burning fiery furnace.”

At the sound of music, it was mandated that everyone worship the golden image or face a fiery furnace as a consequence. However, in verses 8-12, you can see that Daniel and his friends would not bow down to worship the golden image.  In verses 13-18, the King has an exchange with Daniel and his comrades. King Nebuchadnezzar becomes enraged by their disobedience and threatens them with the fiery furnace.  However, in the face of danger, the following answer is given: 

“Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego answered and said to the king, “O Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer you in this matter. If that is the case, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and He will deliver us from your hand, O king. But if not, let it be known to you, O king, that we do not serve your gods, nor will we worship the gold image which you have set up.”

In the moment of what was impending death, Daniel and his friends chose not to bow down to the golden image.  The first lesson we should take from this passage is that there was a resistance against what was idol worship and sinful behavior.  Even in today’s time, those who are truly following Christ will be called to stand firm and reject the changing face of our world.  While nations are approving of sin, and even forcing many to abide by such changes, there must and will be a remnant that will live for God in spite of various mandates.

What we are seeing displayed before our eyes today is just as Paul has said in Romans 1. Many have chosen to reject God and exchange His truth for a lie.  However, what is worse is that there are many who are naming the name of Christ who have bowed down to this world system.  Many church leaders have allowed themselves to be silenced because of threats that have come from government entities.  There are also those who fear the backlash that would affect church membership.  The truth is, if you are going to live for Christ, there will be friction between the world system and those who are in Christ. Concerning yourself over threats and persecution that may cause a loss of church membership is not the priority.  The priority is to stand for Jesus Christ and to reject the sinfulness that has become common practice.

However, if you read further in Daniel 3, you will see that Daniel and his friends were not only thrown in the fiery furnace but God was with them.  In verses 19-27, it is recorded that none of those thrown in the fire were affected by the flames because of God’s protection.  It even came to a point in which the King was so astounded that he praised God in verses 28-29.  The point to be made is that there are rewards for following God’s commands.

The truth about the time that we are living in is that our days on Earth are critical. Every single day, we are seeing an increase in violence, weather-related tragedies, and lawlessness.  Laws will continue to be instituted that balk against what God has designed. Christians who are authentic and called will experience persecution, but we have safety in God as long as we are standing for Him and His laws.  Satan has gained ground throughout the world by setting into place a system of idol worship.  The majority including many who are claiming Christianity, are bowing down.

However, we who have accepted Christ as our Lord and Savior are called not to bow but to stand for God’s ways.  Not doing so will bring ruin, and consequences for a rejection of God’s truth. You too can experience the blessings of God by accepting Christ and coming to the side of truth.  You will avoid the consequences of sin if you confess it to Jesus Christ and accept His sacrifice on the cross.  Choosing not to, and following this world’s order will lead to chaos and destruction.  Jesus died and rose again so you wouldn’t have to be condemned.  Choose Christ, and choose not to bow down to this system.

Never Giving Up On God’s Promises

Have you ever experienced a season in your life that seemed as if it would never end? All of us at some point can testify to the feeling of wanting to quit on our dreams and various desires that have yet to occur.  It is the nagging feeling of throwing everything away, when you have waited and hoped for so long – and yet if you give up you will never realize the dream or the promise that God has made to you.

In Mark chapter 5, verses 25 – 32 there is a story of a woman with an issue of blood.  In this passage, a woman whose name is unknown is suffering from the illness of bleeding.  In verses 25-27 the scripture says in the NIV version: “And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years. She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse.” The woman in question has been treated for bleeding during a 12-year span, however not only did her condition not improve but it grew worse.  

Sometimes, we endure circumstances or challenges which test our endurance.  In some cases, our situations may not improve but worsen as time goes on.  As a result, the potential to give up increases as strength begins to wane.  However, if we continue reading in Mark 5, we can see that there is hope:

“When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, because she thought, “If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed.” Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering. At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my clothes?” “You see the people crowding against you,” his disciples answered, “and yet you can ask, ‘Who touched me?’ ”But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it. Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him the whole truth. He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.”

There are a few things that we can take away from the above passage:

1. We must press forward despite the obstacles – The woman who was suffering from the issue of blood understood that she had no choice but to believe that a miracle could happen.  In verse 27 it says that when she heard about Jesus, she came up behind Him in the crowd and touched His cloak.  In her mind, she knew that Jesus had the power to heal all infirmities.  So, she believed that by moving through the crowd which could have been accepted as an obstacle, that she would be that much closer to her miracle. There are various obstacles which present themselves in our lives.  However, we must move forward with the dogged determination that it takes to fight the good fight of faith. If God has promised something to you, He will perform just what He has said. Philippians 1:6 says that if God has begun a good work in you, He will carry it to completion until the day of Jesus Christ.

2. Jesus had the supernatural power to heal – Throughout scripture there are various occurrences of men, women, and children who experienced healing at the hands of Christ.  By touching the cloak of Jesus, the woman was instantly healed.  It was the divine and supernatural power of Jesus Christ which brought healing to what seemed like an impossible situation.  Have you ever faced something that seemed impossible?  I can certainly tell you that there are at least a couple of things in my own life that seem impossible to me. However, what you and I must do is remember that all power rests in the hands of God.  If Jesus was able to heal a woman who bled for 12 years, then the very power that resides in Him is the same power that can deliver you.  We must be willing to surrender and allow God to lead us to victory.

3. Faith must be activated – Hebrews 11:6 in the King James Version says, “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.”  The woman who needed healing had great faith.  Jesus said to her in verse 32 that her faith had healed her. Basically, it was because of her faith in what Jesus could do, that it was credited to her as righteousness. As a result, she was completely healed from her suffering.  Your faith must be activated if you are going to access the miracles and promises that God has made to you.  The woman who was suffering is a great example of what faith and standing firm in what you believe is.  She chose not to give up, despite the obstacles and the amount of time she waited to be healed.  In the end, it was her faith in what God could do through Jesus that fueled her to victory.

Has God made any promises to you regarding your present and your future? Those of us who are in Christ have access to the miracles of God, but it takes faith and a willingness to move forward.  Giving up isn’t an option because to do so is tantamount to saying that God cannot perform a miracle.  By following after God through obedience and faith, you are a candidate for His blessings.

If you do not know Jesus as your personal savior, you are missing out on the very miracles and blessings that can be available to you.  By accepting Christ as your savior and confessing your sins, you are able to experience the great things that God has in store for you.  The greatest message of the Cross of Christ is not just that He died for you, but that He never gave up.  When Jesus went through the process of the crucifixion, He was burdened and undoubtedly felt like giving up.  However, His obedience to God, and knowing that His actions would save many, was what drove him to die on the cross for you and I.

Jesus never gave up on His mission, and neither should you.  Stand on the promises of God, and even when it becomes difficult, do as 1 Corinthians 15:58 says, which is to be steadfast and unmovable.  We all feel like giving up sometimes, and often times waiting for God to deliver us can be wearisome.  However, God is a promise keeper and when it is your timing for a miracle, you shall have the victory in the name of Jesus Christ.

Daring to Believe – Faith in Who God Is & What He Can Do

ID-100289390There has always been the element of “believing when you see it” or seeing the physical evidence of a matter before it can be believed.  Especially concerning God and His existence, many who are considered Atheists choose to look at God as one who does not exist because there isn’t any proof to show that He does. However, choosing to believe or not to believe is a decision that one makes.  Whether or not you or I believe in God, does not negate His existence.  The key is taking the leap of faith to believe in what we cannot see. Some call it “blind faith” however, as it relates to God it truly takes humility to admit that we as humans are not supreme in our being.  The truth is, it takes a willingness to be accountable to someone higher than yourself which in this case is God.

In John 20:29, we see an exchange of words between Jesus and one of His Disciples by the name of Thomas.  The scripture reads in the NIV version:

“Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”  In John 20, the passage records the resurrection of Jesus. Mary Magdalane finds that the tomb of Jesus is empty and alerts two of the Lord’s Disciples.  Peter and another Disciple discover that the tomb is empty, and they returned to where they were before.  Then in verses 11 through 17 Mary converses with two angels, and Jesus at the tomb.  Jesus gives her a command in verse 17 to tell the Disciples of His resurrection.

It is important to note that this chapter gives us an insight into who “Doubting Thomas” is.  Thomas was one of the Disciples, and he was known for his skepticism in Christ’s resurrection. Jesus first appears to the Disciples in verses 19 through 23, however Thomas does not see Jesus until later.  In verses 24 through 29, we see an exchange between the Disciples, Jesus and Thomas:

(NIV) “Now Thomas (also known as Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.” A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.” Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!”Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

In the above scripture, Thomas immediately shows his disbelief but he also shows that he must see the proof of Christ’s resurrection in order to believe. We live in a society that operates in the same way.  There must be emphatic proof that God exists or that Jesus was indeed the Son of God.  Thomas doubted that Jesus rose from the dead, because for one he was prideful in his own thinking and certainty that the man standing before him was not Jesus the Christ.  Secondly, Thomas needed physical proof in order to believe that Jesus was indeed resurrected.

There are many in our world today, who are skeptical of God’s existence and the whole idea of Christianity.  Some of it is because of how there have been poor examples of those who profess Christ.  In turn, there are those who see hypocritical behavior and they shrink back in distaste for what is supposed to be an authentic message and lifestyle.  However, much of the disbelief comes from pride and not having actual proof from the human and worldly standpoint.

In order for one to understand who God is, they must first surrender their life in every area which means having the humility to admit that we as humans are not supreme in our being.  It takes relinquishing one’s stance to finally see the glory of God through new eyes.  This means, confessing your pride and your sins before Jesus Christ.  It also means accepting Christ as your savior, which involves living in a submitted fashion before a Holy God.

Secondly, it involves a choice to believe even in the unseen.  Jesus said to the Disciples in the latter part of verse 29, “blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” This means, that a person who chooses to believe and has not even seen the individual or entity in question is blessed.  The Bible says in 2 Corinthians 5:7 that we are to walk by faith and not by sight.

When you walk by faith, you are leaning unto God and trusting in Him for who He is and what He can do. By believing in God, you are taking yourself out of the equation and allowing God to show you the path to a better life.  There are scriptures that are full of miracles that were received based on one’s obedience and belief in what God could do. Even in our world today, there are miracles that occur as a result of what God has done.

However, it takes true humility to surrender to what we cannot see.  Only those who choose to live in spiritual blindness, will fail to see the wondrous works that God is able to do.  It is the boldness in a person that challenges the doctrine of a world that refuses to acknowledge who God is because of a “lack of physical proof”.  However, if one desires proof they can be pointed to plant life, the ocean, the sun – these are things that man could not and did not create. Even our very lives are a testament to the creator.

The great thing about God is that despite humanity’s insistence in disbelief, He gives us a chance to believe. Jesus Christ was offered as a sacrifice for you and I.  Knowing God through Christ, is the best decision you could ever make. While you are alive, you have an opportunity to believe, but the choice is yours.  Those who have already made that choice, we are secured eternally. You too can have eternal security, by relinquishing your pride and believing. One can only know who God is through an authentic relationship with Him through Jesus Christ.  The best proof is the proof that you will receive when you see that God is indeed as real as others say He is, but you must see it for yourself.

Speaking God’s Truth Instead of Remaining in Silence

ID-10029952Throughout human history, the Gospel of Jesus Christ and professing God’s truth has been met with opposition. There are many Biblical accounts of those who were martyred for the sake of spreading the Gospel of Jesus.  Even many were tortured, beaten, and made to be pariahs in their own villages because of their stance for speaking against sin and for salvation.  This is also true in today’s time – many Christians are now reviled for standing up against the sinfulness and disobedience against the precepts of God.

In the Bible, the prophet Jeremiah was given a task to warn the people of Jerusalem and the Kings of Judah in Jeremiah 19.  Throughout that passage, Jeremiah gives a warning against both nations for their idolatry and worship unto Baal who was a foreign god, in addition to their insolence against God’s decrees.  As Jeremiah gives his prophecy, he is then imprisoned by a Priest named Pashur. (Jeremiah 20: 1-2).  In verse 3, after Jeremiah is released he gives a prophecy to Pashur that his name will no longer be “Pashur” but “Terror on Every Side.”  This is because of Pashur’s willingness to defy God’s words and imprisoning Jeremiah for his prophecy.  In verses 4-6, Jeremiah prophesies that the nation of Judah will be given over to the King of Babylon – while Pashur along with his friends and the Kings of Judah will be buried in Babylon as punishment.

The above is Jeremiah’s prophecy which eventually comes true, however, there is a complaint that Jeremiah makes to God:

Jeremiah 20: 7-9 says in the NIV version:

“You deceived me, Lord, and I was deceived; you overpowered me and prevailed. I am ridiculed all day long; everyone mocks me. Whenever I speak, I cry out proclaiming violence and destruction. So the word of the Lord has brought me insult and reproach all day long. But if I say, “I will not mention his word or speak anymore in his name, his word is in my heart like a fire, a fire shut up in my bones. I am weary of holding it in; indeed, I cannot.”

Jeremiah has grown weary of the persecution that he is receiving despite doing as God has told him to do. However, notice the words he uses, “his word is in my heart like a fire, a fire shut up in my bones. I am weary of holding it in; indeed, I cannot.” What Jeremiah is saying is that even if he wants to withhold his words or prophecies, the urge is too strong to stifle.  He uses the word, “fire” because the heaviness and urgency he feels to prophesy cannot be contained.  A fire is a consuming entity which if not squelched by water, it reaches and burns everything within distance.

That is how we as Christians should treat our walk with Christ.  Living in this Christian life should not be relegated to being separated from those who are in darkness, but it should also involve an active participation in sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  The Gospel of Jesus Christ is often coined as, “The Good News” because the death, burial and resurrection of Christ is indeed good news.  It is good news because, Jesus’ death on the cross broke the power of sin over our lives.  We are no longer condemned eternally because we have Jesus Christ as the advocate or the one who took our place by taking the penalty for us.  The only thing we must do is confess our sins, accept Christ as our Lord and Savior, and live in obedience unto God.

However, we are living in an age where there is a staunch opposition against the things of God.  While human history has given direct evidence of persecution against Christians, it seems that even more so now those in Christ are being challenged. Even in America, we are seeing more instances of Christians that are being marginalized because of the Godlessness that is entrenched in our society. We are also seeing a watering down of God’s truth for the sake of appeasing the majority. Pastors and church leaders have become muzzled while, in exchange, church membership began to be the focus instead of providing the truth of God’s word.

We must understand that God did not call Christians to be silent, but to profess Jesus Christ and Him crucified before a dying world.  Just as Jeremiah could not hide the truth, we should not hide God’s truth.  The Apostle Paul says in Romans 1:16 (NIV) “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile.” Paul among others during his time understood the mission but also the critical nature of sharing the Gospel with the lost.

A generation of people are now being taught that you can sin without consequence. It is now the trend that your own truth is what matters, in addition to the “live and let live” mentality.  Now, it is deemed disrespectful if you were to tell someone about their lifestyle in an attempt to change how they live. The Bible makes it clear in 1 Corinthians 2:14 (NIV) the following:

“The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit.”  This means that those who are not living by the Spirit of God are unable to accept the truth that comes from God’s word.  However, that does not mean that God cannot convict someone’s heart.  The job of every Christian is not only to live a life that is acceptable unto God, but to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ to those who are lost.

Remaining in silence in the face of opposition, insults, and criticism from non-believers only dampens the message of the cross.  Jesus Christ died and rose again for all sinners, which includes you and I.  Even when persecution comes, we who are in Christ should continue to spread the good news.  The good news is like a panacea or a remedy for a medical condition.

Sin and disobedience unto God can be likened to a disease.  It is a condition which not only separates all who are unrepentant from God, but it causes physical and spiritual damage during life.  The end result of a life that is not surrendered to God through Jesus Christ is one that spends eternity in Hell, separated from the presence of God.  However, the remedy is Jesus Christ.  If Christians who are truly following God, fail to exemplify and speak the truth of God to others, then it is as if we who have been cured are allowing those in their illness to die.

Jeremiah like other prophets could not stand and watch nations that were Godless, burn and suffer because of disobedience without warning the people and the Kings.  Although each prophet’s declaration and warning came true, they understood that those who heard God’s truth would be spared if they chose to repent and turn from their wicked ways.  The number of those who choose to perish might be greater than those who choose life, but the point of sharing the message is to give everyone in the vicinity an opportunity.  The opportunity has been given to you and I.  If you don’t know Jesus, you can be spared from the penalty of sin and disobedience.  Christ is the remedy for a broken life.  Accept His gift of salvation, and you will have a life that will remain in the safety of a loving God.

Knowing Your Identity in Christ

ID-10043406In the age of technology, media, and the changing social climate, there are many voices that are speaking to us.  If you were to turn on your television, you would find that the media wields a certain amount of influence over how many act and think.  Reality shows portray images of lascivious and sinful behavior which is now embraced by mainstream culture.  Even local and international news networks have become the breeding ground for promoting lifestyles that were once thought to be off-limits or unconscionable. In many respects, the internet has caused a widespread feeding frenzy, based on the content that is produced to all viewers.  As a result, many suffer from having an “identity crisis”.  

This means that many who are subject to what society has promoted, begin to form their minds and lives around what is being given as truth. However, Romans 12:2 says,

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is–his good, pleasing and perfect will.” 

The thing about an identity is, it is based on who a person is, because of programming that takes place in the mind.  Your identity is like a fingerprint because it distinguishes who you are. Much of why we see confusion within the younger generations today, is because they don’t know who they are. There are many who are attempting to figure out who they are, because their identity is not in Christ, but rather it is in the lies that satan has fed them. How do you find your identity?

In order to know who you are meant to be, you must consult the creator.  God has given us an opportunity to know Him through Jesus Christ.  He has also given us an identity which is wrapped in who He has created us to be.  Going back to Romans 12:2, the Apostle Paul admonishes Christians not to conform to the pattern of this world, but to be transformed by the renewing of your mind.  This can only be done by accepting Christ and allowing God to transform your mind.

Since the mind is a powerful tool, it can be shaped in such a way that one begins to act and live out of what is received. The reason why the Apostle Paul said that we should be transformed by the renewing of our mind, is because he understood that our mind must be programmed in the things of God instead of the things of the world.  In doing so, we will find our identity in Christ.

Even before you and I were born, God has given us an identity in Him. Genesis 1:27 says, “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.” What is our identity as it relates to God?  As Genesis 1:27 says, God created man in His own image.  You and I were created in the image of God. However, because of sin which entered into the world through Adam & Eve, the image became shattered.  This meant that an identity crisis occurred, because of the separation that sin caused.

Thus, you now have men and women who are attempting to find out who they are. They do it through changing their appearance, their gender, their actions, which are all an attempt to gain their identity. While humanity is still created to be in God’s image, it is sinfulness that distorts that image which means a distorted or confused identity.  What is your identity in Christ, and how do you find it?

1 Peter 2:9 says “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.” The true identity if we were ever to discover it in Christ, is that we are a chosen people.  God created each human to be set apart for His use and to be a royal priesthood as the Apostle Peter says in this scripture. Your identity is forever changed when you accept Jesus Christ as your savior.

This means that you are no longer bound by sin, nor is your identity hinged upon what the world says.  You are secured in knowing who you are through Christ Jesus.  Another translation of 1 Peter 2:9 uses the words, “a peculiar people” which means that in Christ, we are different.  God created you to be in His image, which means that you are meant to be separated from what the world has established.

When the media and those who have embraced the various lies, say that you should follow the crowd by accepting what is promoted, know that you are being given a false identity.  The standard that God has given to every human being is one of holiness, and being called out of darkness into His light.  The identity that we can find in Christ is one that leads to knowing who we are, and what our purpose is.  Only in God’s presence and in a relationship with Him can we find out what we were born to do.

In addition to knowing what our identity is in Christ, we must then realize how we can find that identity.  To find it, you must seek after the creator.  God already knows who you are – but through prayer, worship and reading God’s word, you will come to realize the identity that God has given you through Jesus Christ.

Think of it in the sense of a relationship with a human being.  The more you spend time with a person or group of people, you begin to identify with certain characteristics.  It is the same with God – you will begin to show the fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5: 22-23) which are based on godly characteristics that come from spending time with God.  As a result, the fruit that you bear become the identifiable traits that come from who you are in Christ.

The reverse is also true as it relates to embracing the things of this world. Many who seek after worldly and sinful pleasures bear the fruit of wickedness which results from identifying with what satan has proposed.  The key, however, is to recognize that only God can give you your true identity – the world presents a false identity which leads to confusion.

God desires that every human being know Him through Jesus Christ, but He also desires that we know who we are in Him.  If you are attempting to find out who you are, by trying endless ways to fit into this world’s structure then you will find a lack of peace. Jesus Christ was offered as a sacrifice for you and your sins, which means that He holds the key to your identity.  Without Christ, you will always search for who you are meant to be, but you won’t find it in what this world has to offer.  Giving your life and heart to Jesus is the only way to life, because in Christ you can and will know your identity.
