Your Inheritance Is Available to You – Know its Value and Accept the Gift

ID-10052834Most if not everyone wants to be a recipient of a fortune or treasure that is passed down within a family structure.  To receive something of value from someone who has passed it down to you in the event of their death is commonly known as an “inheritance”. Often, responsible families will incorporate a will which is in the form of a document. In this document, it is outlined as to who will receive items that are passed down from the person who will at some point pass away. An inheritance can be a large sum of money, a car, or a house.  It can be anything that holds intrinsic value.

Just like an inheritance within a family structure provides the chain of passing down items of value to succeeding generations, those who are in Christ are also heirs to the inheritance that God offers.  In Romans chapter 8, the Apostle Paul explains the inheritance that every Christian has if we are truly connected to God:

(NIV) Verses 14-17:

“For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.”

The main words to focus on in this scripture are, “heirs”, “God’s children”, and “share”. These words are associated with anyone who follows Christ, because once we are adopted into the family of God through Christ & the Holy Spirit, we become God’s children.  What does it mean to be a child of God? You can think of this in a similar context of being a son or a daughter to a Mother or a Father.

In the process of an inheritance, parents that truly love their children usually leave a legacy or something of value for the next generation. That is because the relationship between the child and parent warrants that there is a continuation of items of worth within the hands of those who are next in line.  God treats those who are His children in the same way.  All of us who are in Christ, we share in His blessings because we are heirs with God and joint heirs with Christ.  It is because we are in the family of God, that we have access to the blessings He wants to bestow upon us.

However, notice what Paul also says at the end of verse 17.  He says “if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.” Paul is talking about the sufferings of Christ.  To be a Christian isn’t to simply claim the title, but it is to suffer as Christ did for the sake of God.  Just as we will be recipients of the blessings of God, we will also be recipients of momentary suffering for Christ’s sake.  

As mentioned, we who are in Christ have access to the inheritance that God wants to give to us.  It is the element of passing down gifts and items of value that God wishes to provide to every person who follows Him.  However, there is one thing that all Christians must be responsible for and that is maintaining our inheritance.  It is quite possible to reject what is being given to you by giving your inheritance to someone else in exchange for what appears to be a better deal.

In our society today, there are many who constantly squander their inheritance because they are living in sin and disobedience.  God wishes that all people come to know Him and to give them a blessed existence.  However, because many don’t know that an inheritance is accessible to them through Christ, they are giving their inheritance away on a daily basis.  This is just what Esau did with Jacob in the Old Testament.

In Genesis chapter 25, the birth of Jacob and Esau is recorded in verses 24-25. Jacob and Esau were individuals who the Lord had given as a prophecy to their mother Rebekah.  They were also two individuals that were inherently different in their character and in their behavior. Esau was originally given the birthright because he was the first-born.  A birthright simply meant that a son who was born first was given the same authority that the Father had upon his death.  So, Esau would possess the authority and other assets given to him by his Father, because he was born first.

Notice in verses 25-26 that there was a struggle between Esau and Jacob as they exited their Mother’s womb: (NIV) “The first to come out was red, and his whole body was like a hairy garment; so they named him Esau. After this, his brother came out, with his hand grasping Esau’s heel; so he was named Jacob.” We can see that Jacob held onto Esau’s heel with the intent to steal his birthright even before he was born.

As the two grew older, there was another point in time in which Jacob had another opportunity to steal his brother’s birthright. In verses 29-33 we see the following exchange:

(NIV) “Once when Jacob was cooking some stew, Esau came in from the open country, famished. He said to Jacob, “Quick, let me have some of that red stew! I’m famished!” (That is why he was also called Edom. Jacob replied, “First sell me your birthright.” “Look, I am about to die,” Esau said. “What good is the birthright to me?” But Jacob said, “Swear to me first.” So he swore an oath to him, selling his birthright to Jacob.” 

So, essentially Esau sold his birthright for stew. There are two things that we can gather from this:

1. Esau did not know or care about the value of his birthright – There are many who live their lives in sin, not knowing the value of the inheritance that God offers.  By being in Christ you are able to receive God’s blessings.  However, when we sin we are trading in our inheritance for something that is worthless and perishable.

2. Esau was willing to do anything to feed his appetite – The scripture says that Esau was hungry – so hungry that he gave away his inheritance. Sometimes it is quite easy to give away your inheritance for a moment of sin.  All of us have various appetites that are driven by our flesh, but if we are not careful, we can give our inheritance away for a moment of sin that is fleeting.

The point to be made is that when we come to know who God is in the pardon of our sins, we have access to an inheritance.  God has so much in store for you and I, but we must be willing to see the value of His blessings.  If you are in sin, you are giving up your inheritance for momentary pleasure.  Christ died and rose again so you could be a joint heir with Him.  Accept Christ as your Lord and savior by repenting of your sins. Once you have accepted Jesus’ sacrifice, you are welcomed into the family of God where your inheritance is waiting for you.

Are You Committing Idolatry? – The Principle of the “Unknown god”

Idol worship is a practice that has occurred for centuries.  To create an idol is to esteem a person or a thing far above anyone else.  Idolatry can occur in the form of spending too much time in an activity, or worshiping a person with a high level of devotion. Anyone and anything can be a god or an idol.  For some, money is an object that is worshiped, while for others their home or vehicle is their god. However, when we as humans commit idolatry, we are essentially putting something or someone before the one and true God.

In the book of Acts chapter 17 verses 16-31, we see that the Apostle Paul travels to the city of Athens.  At that time period, Athens was known for its idol worship and institution of Greek gods.  In verse 16, it says that Paul was distressed by the worship of idols in the city.  So, he begins to make a plea concerning Jesus Christ and His resurrection to those who would listen. However, he is challenged by Greek philosophers in verses 18 – 20:

(NIV) “A group of Epicurean and Stoic philosophers began to debate with him. Some of them asked, “What is this babbler trying to say?” Others remarked, “He seems to be advocating foreign gods.” They said this because Paul was preaching the good news about Jesus and the resurrection. Then they took him and brought him to a meeting of the Areopagus, where they said to him, “May we know what this new teaching is that you are presenting? You are bringing some strange ideas to our ears, and we would like to know what they mean.”

The philosophers were curious as to who Paul was referring to. In their minds, Jesus was a foreign god who they had never heard of.  However, here is what Paul says in verses 22-23: 

(NIV) “Paul then stood up in the meeting of the Areopagus and said: “People of Athens! I see that in every way you are very religious. For as I walked around and looked carefully at your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: to an unknown god. So you are ignorant of the very thing you worship.”

The issue with those in Athens was that they were so insistent on their idol worship that they erected an idol which was marked, “to an unknown god.” Who was the “unknown god”? Notice that Paul says in verse 22 that the Athenians were“religious” meaning they have a form and fashion of rituals without truly knowing who God is.  Which then results in Paul saying in verse 23 that the Athenians who are practicing idolatry are ignorant of the very thing that they worship.

What Paul is alluding to is that the Athenians were so caught up in their idolatry of other gods, that they failed to recognize God for themselves.  So, in their error they erected a statue among many other gods, without truly knowing the Lord through relationship. The Athenians were so ritualistic that they worshiped and instituted every idol they could think of, including the one they did not know. There are a couple of principles that we can take away from this:

1. God desires to be known – It is clear that the “unknown god” is that of God almighty.  In verses 24-25 Paul says the following:

(NIV) “The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by human hands. And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything. Rather, he himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else.”

What Paul is saying is that what distinguishes God almighty from the idols that the Athenians erected is the fact that God is a living God.  God desires that we know Him in the pardon of our sins through Jesus Christ.  He is a living God who wants to have a relationship with us, but when we are insistent upon worshiping and serving idols in our lives, we cannot know Him in His fullness.

The problem with the Athenians was that they were thrown into confusion because they allowed idolatry to rule.  Not only did they worship idol gods which is a sin before God, but they attempted to worship God in their ignorance without knowing who He was.  As long as we remain in our sinfulness and disobedience, we cannot see the truth of God for who He is. Unknowingly, the Athenians erected an idol which represented the one and true God, however, it was a part of God’s plan to reach out to the Athenians through their error and through Paul.

2. God will not tolerate idolatry – Paul not only expresses the fact that God is the giver of life, but he also makes it clear that God expects us to lay down our idols and repent:

Verses 28-30: 

(NIV) “For in him we live and move and have our being.’ As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’ “Therefore since we are God’s offspring, we should not think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone—an image made by human design and skill. In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent. For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to everyone by raising him from the dead.”

Notice the words “repent” and “judge.” God not only desires to know us and that we know Him, but he wants us to turn from our sinfulness and idolatry. There are many in today’s world that have erected their own idols which are an attempt to replace God. Truthfully, we were made to worship God the creator, but because we all have a need to worship, in our sin we choose other things or people to replace God.

However, we must repent and turn from our wicked ways.  Not doing so, will bring judgment as Paul mentions.  If you were to look at scriptures throughout the old Testament, you will see examples of nations that were destroyed because of idolatry and sin.  Sodom & Gomorrah is a prime example of a city that paid a heavy price for its sinfulness and idolatry.  In our current time, there are many nations that have erected false gods, in an attempt to replace God almighty. However, God promises to judge each person and nation based on their behaviors and sin.

God who created the Heavens and the Earth deserves our worship.  We all have a choice in the matter because God wants us to love Him by choice. Some will choose to worship God, and others will worship their own gods. However, the key difference between the gods we create and the God that is self-sufficient is that there is a peace and love that surpasses all understanding when we are in God’s presence.

God’s presence is unlike anything you and I could ever experience.  Even if we choose to worship our own gods, the gods that we create cannot match the awesome power of God almighty.  Satan wants us to be blinded by our own desires and to create idols. However, he does not tell you the judgment that comes when we serve created gods. If you haven’t chosen Jesus Christ as your savior, you have an opportunity to know God in the pardon of your sins. God wants every human being to know Him.  Choose Christ, and serve the one and true God.

The Day of the Lord Is Coming – Heed the Warnings That God is Giving To Us

ID-10054308Every day, there are signs that point to the End Times or the return of Jesus Christ. Various signs include wars and rumors of wars, Earthquakes in diverse places, the increase in humanity’s sinfulness, along with a whole host of other signs.  Matthew 24 is perhaps the most referred to of scriptures as it relates to the signs of the end.  In that chapter, Jesus gives His Disciples signs of what to look for as the coming of the end inches closer and closer.

However, the book of 2 Peter Chapter 3, also mentions the coming of the Lord, but it also includes how we are to respond to the adversity that results from the times that we live in. Before examining this scripture, we should look at the End Times from the perspective of Noah. In Genesis 6, we see that the wickedness or sinfulness of humanity has become burdensome in the heart of God.  In verses 5-6, it says:

(NIV) “The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time. The Lord regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled.” So, as a result of this God decides in verse 7 that He will wipe humanity off the face of the Earth. The only one who was spared was that of Noah and his family because he found favor in the eyes of the Lord. 

As it is commonly known from scripture, Noah is instructed to create an ark which would protect all of the animals and his family from the great flood that would cover the Earth.  However, notice what it says in Matthew 24: 37-39:

(NIV) “For the coming of the Son of Man will be just like the days of Noah. For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and they did not understand until the flood came and took them all away; so will the coming of the Son of Man be.” 

Here, Jesus is speaking and He is suggesting to us that at the time of Noah building the ark, most were living in their sinfulness and ignoring the impending doom which was the flood.  However, as Jesus said, they did not understand until the flood came and took them all away.  How often do we see various signs and warnings today, which are meant to give us a chance to avoid disaster?

Even in today’s time, we are seeing blatant sinfulness that is paraded throughout the media and even in our own lives.  Many have chosen to reject the truth of God while a whole host of signs are being put before us which are pointing to the return of Jesus Christ. Our world structure continues to decay while, at the same time, there is a call for global unification and peace.  However, the peace that many are seeking is coming from man-made solutions instead of seeking God for the solutions that plague our world. Whenever humanity decides that in its pride that it will not seek God, then nothing but chaos and confusion occurs.

In 2 Peter, Jesus gives us a warning of what will occur in the last days.  He says in verses 3-4: (NIV) “Above all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. They will say, “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised? Ever since our ancestors died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.”  Basically, what Jesus is saying is similar to what many say today.  Many of those who scoff at the coming of Jesus, say that such “signs of the times” have occurred in years past.  Many today scoff at the promise of Christ’s return and wonder why He hasn’t returned as promised.  However, look at what Jesus says in verses 5-7:

(NIV) “But they deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word the heavens came into being and the earth was formed out of water and by water. By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed. By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly.” The point is, there are many who do not take into account that God has revealed His judgment to humanity before in the form of the great flood.  The same judgment will be poured out again but in the form of fire as Jesus said in verse 7. 

Looking also at verses 9-10:

(NIV) “The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare.”

So, Jesus says that the Lord is not slow to keep His promise as some understand it to be.  The naysayers will and often do say that Christ isn’t returning and that the end times do not exist.  Yet, there are many signs that we see every single day which point to the return of Jesus Christ.  Also, God’s judgment will come to any nation or group of people who decide to openly reject Him.

Examples of blatant rejection?  Just look at the various laws that are instituting and promoting sinful behavior.  Not only in America is homosexuality being endorsed for “marriage” but countries around the world are now attempting to re-define an institution that was not created by human hands.  Even if it isn’t that particular issue, there are countless examples of lawlessness which is promoted and shown throughout our world.  Governments both domestic and worldwide operate in corruption and pass laws which have pushed God out, and welcomed sinfulness and secular humanism.

However, here is the good news and that is what Jesus referred to in verse 9, when He says “Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish but everyone to come to repentance.” God wishes that no one perish.  There are penalties for sinfulness and disobedience which many will choose to pay for.  However, Jesus Christ died and rose again so you wouldn’t have to pay the price of destruction.  God wants all of us to come to the knowledge of how good He is, and how loving He is.  However, in the midst of sin and rebellion, we cannot know God as He wants us to.

The point for all of us is to realize that our world is growing increasingly wicked.  Day after day and year after year, examples are shown of how perverse and sinful current and future generations are and will be.  The Bible is clear that Jesus Christ will return, but in His return, judgment will come to those who are in rebellion.  You don’t have to choose a life of sinfulness and a destructive end. If you haven’t accepted Christ’s gift of salvation, then you have an opportunity.

For those of us who have, we shouldn’t allow ourselves to lose sight of God’s promises by listening to those who reject God.  God will judge every human, and sinfulness will be brought to justice because God has already promised such.  So, heed the warnings and seek the Lord in repentance while you have an opportunity.

The Connection That Gives Life

ID-10011760Technology has become a prevalent part of how we live in our day-to-day lives. There is a concerted emphasis on utilizing the internet for research, entertainment, and social networking. Our lives have become centered around the very use of technology to the point where it is now a way of life. However, there is one thing that technology must encompass in order for it to exist and function, and that is a connection.

All technological devices that require any sort of electricity requires a connection.  Even with wireless technology, at some point there must be a connection that either replenishes the energy supply or maintains the electrical current so that the connection is consistent. Without the connection, then the device in question will no longer function.  Our lives are also examples of what it looks like when we do not have the divine connection that only Jesus Christ can give us.

In John 15, Jesus is teaching His Disciples about the various principles as it relates to how they should live and how the world will respond to their decision to follow Christ.  However, for the purposes of this post, the focus will be on verses 1-8.  In these key verses, Jesus uses the illustration of a vine and its branches.  In verses 1-4 Jesus says in the NIV,

“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.”

Jesus is saying that he is the “True Vine” or the one that provides life to the branches. There are two things that should be noted in the illustration of the branches and the vine:

1. A connection with Jesus Christ produces life – The key phrase to focus on here is “remain in me.” Jesus said in verse 4, that no one can bear fruit unless they remain in the true vine.  Jesus Christ is the True Vine, which means he provides the connection for all of us to be productive and to have life. Just as a plug into an electrical socket produces an electrical connection to a device, our lives produce life when we are connected to Jesus Christ.  We cannot have life abundantly within ourselves or without Christ.  So many are seeking other connections in our world system, seeking a fulfilled life. However, it is impossible to have true fulfillment outside of Jesus Christ. The sin filled world that we live in offers various methods to produce a version of “life.” Unfortunately, many take what is given as truth and believe that they can have life in the way that is promoted by the world.  Jesus made it very clear that without a connection to Him (the True vine) fruit or life cannot be produced.  Verse 5 says, “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” Apart from Christ, we can do nothing because He is the power source.

2. A life without a connection to Jesus Christ produces a spiritual death – If you were to turn on a television that was unplugged or it did not have a power source, you would find that the television would remain in the off position.  That is because the television’s power source is not connected. Without a connection or power source, the television becomes worthless, which means it is a candidate to be thrown away. However, when a connection occurs, the television has power to operate which means that it is functioning in its capacity and purpose.  Jesus says in verse 6, “If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.” The concept that Christ mentions here involves a person’s life that is not connected to God through Jesus Christ.  In the earlier verse, Jesus says that God who is the gardener, prunes or cuts every branch that does not bear fruit.  Anyone who is not connected to God through Christ, will face the consequence of a life that is destined for destruction.  The pathway in this life is either life or death in the spiritual sense.  There are many who have chosen to live their lives disconnected from Christ, and as a result they suffer short and long-term consequences. 

The promise that Jesus gives to us is that if we remain or abide in Him, then we will bear much fruit.  Verses 7-8 says, “If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.” Our lives are meant to bear much fruit, and we can be the beneficiaries of God’s blessings.  However, this can only come if we are connected to God through Jesus Christ. 

God is the ultimate power source, but in order to have a life that is fulfilled you must be plugged in through Jesus.  All around us, a world is steadily in decay and decline. Morality and even godly values are no longer held to the highest standard.  Now, a lifestyle of your own choosing and living to please yourself is what has become acceptable. However, those who live a life in disconnection from Jesus only find themselves in a state of confusion.

Various sins which are now considered to be acceptable, only lead to the fruit of pain and chaos.  However, Jesus offers life which is built upon stability and peace.  Just as a device shows its ability to function properly when it is connected, our lives function properly when we are connected to Christ.  If you have already accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and personal savior, then you already know the benefits and the power that comes from being connected to Jesus.

However, if you have not, I encourage you to connect yourself to the True Vine.  A life without Christ is one that lacks meaning, order, and joy.  A life with Christ is one that produces much fruit, and at the end of your days on Earth you will have eternal security for your soul.  Choose life by choosing the connection that gives life, and that is Jesus Christ.

Who Are You Putting Your Trust In?

The world that we live in has become inundated with a 24/7 media blitz. The news is delivered in various forms – from television to the newspaper, to the internet.  There are so many ways to remain abreast of the latest information and current affairs in our world. Political elections take place in various countries on a yearly basis with the effort to gather support among the electorate. As a result, many citizens who have the freedom to choose their politicians are often gazing at a system that they are cautiously hoping for a change to occur.

Year after year, humanity attempts to put its trust in mere men and women with the hope that the system will work in their favor.  Sometimes, our hopes are met with elements of leadership and good decisions.  Other times, the expectation of leadership that is undefiled by corruption and inability is dashed by constant behaviors of which are against moral and legal precedents.  Even the very news that we consume, there is a level of trust that is placed in the news reported.  The very individuals that are in our lives, trust is also apart of the equation.

However, should trust be placed in the ever-changing society that we witness daily? When it comes to trust, Proverbs 3:5-8 in the NIV says it this way:

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord, and turn away from evil. It will be healing to your flesh and refreshment to your bones.”

Despite all of the voices that cry out for our attention, there is only one that you can trust in completely and that is the ever-present and almighty God.  The above scripture says to trust in the Lord with all of your heart, and not to lean on your own understanding. Why does King Solomon who is the writer of Proverbs say not to lean on your own understanding?

The reason is because humanity is fallible or imperfect.  All of us are prone to misjudge and to commit errors which are based out of our own pride. Trusting in ourselves or putting our trust in others is a sure way to be led astray.  Using politics as an example, so many are banking on the promises made by those who have authority over them. When each election cycle begins, the words of each candidate voice what is often meant to be their promises for the future.  However, in reality many become disappointed when the same candidates are guilty of breaking those promises.

That is why we are not to put our trust in what humanity has said but to trust in God who will never lead us astray.  The above verse says, “In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.” If you are following after the things of God and allowing Him to lead you, then He will show you who is truthful and who is operating in deceit.  By putting your complete trust in a human made system, you are open to not only disappointment but you are not allowing God to lead you in His perfect will and way.

Even as it relates to our personal relationships, we are to draw a line which prevents the element of complete trust.  This is so that we know that rather than hinging our hopes on what those we know will do, we will hinge our hopes on what God is able to do. Throughout scripture, there are many instances of those who trusted in God and benefited from the very things that God did on their behalf.

One example was that of Job.  Job was a man of integrity and he was an individual who lived uprightly before God.  During his life, he experienced plenty and lacked nothing.  However, in Job chapter 1, we can see that God and satan are having a discussion.  In verses 6-7, it says in the NIV,

“One day the angels came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came with them. The Lord said to Satan, “Where have you come from? Satan answered the Lord, “From roaming throughout the earth, going back and forth on it.”

Verses 8-12: 

“Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil.” “Does Job fear God for nothing?” Satan replied. “Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has? You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land. But now stretch out your hand and strike everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face.”The Lord said to Satan, “Very well, then, everything he has is in your power, but on the man himself do not lay a finger.”

What occurs is that Job is struck with illness, he loses his children and all of his oxen and other livestock.  However, Job’s wife utters the following to him in the midst of all of his troubles:

“His wife said to him, “Are you still maintaining your integrity? Curse God and die!”

Job’s wife demanded that he curse God and die, because of all of the things he had lost. However, the key point about Job is that he trusted in God despite all of the turmoil he experienced.  Rather than cursing God and dying as a result he maintained his integrity and looked to God for his guidance.  Here is the reward that Job experienced for his trust in God:

Verses 12-13: 

“The Lord blessed the latter part of Job’s life more than the former part. He had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, a thousand yoke of oxen and a thousand donkeys. And he also had seven sons and three daughters.”

Despite the things that Job lost, he not only trusted in God but he was given so much more in return for his trust.  The point is, by trusting in God you will always find yourself in a better position.  So many are attempting to trust in what their politicians are saying, what the media is saying, and what their friends are saying.  However, God wants us to trust in Him, not just for material things but even for our very lives.  Have you trusted in Jesus Christ as your personal savior?

Jesus Christ died on the cross and was resurrected for your sin.  Trusting in Him for your salvation is an integral part of experiencing the blessings of God. Putting your trust in a failing world system only leads to a life that is confused.  However, the Solid Rock, Jesus Christ, He is the one to trust in order to have life and life abundantly. Who are you putting your trust in?  I encourage you to trust in the name of the Lord, for He will never fail.

The Unpopular Road – The Road to Life

ID-100186694We are living in a time in which there are many who are rejecting the truth of God. Many examples can be seen which involve the masses who have turned their back on God, to embrace secular humanism.  It is the rapidity of such change in the world culture that brings to light the scripture which can be found in Matthew 7:13-14.  It simply reads:

(NIV) “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.”

In this chapter, Jesus was teaching on various topics, which included the principle of the wide and narrow pathway.  What Jesus mentions is the unfortunate fact that there will be many who will choose the opposite of life which is eternal damnation.  1 Corinthians 2:14 says, (NIV) “The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit.”

It is the individual who is entrenched in their sin that does not accept the commands and precepts of God.  The thing about sin is, sin within itself is pleasurable and enticing. However, the joy that can be found in a sinful lifestyle only lasts for a season.  Sin not only brings pleasure, but negative consequences are a result of practicing a life that is sinful.  When Jesus refers to the wide and narrow pathway, He is essentially making the declaration that most will choose the path that goes to destruction. Only a few will choose the path that leads to life.  Why is this so?  Why is it that the majority will walk in a path that is more populous than those who do not?

The answer lies within a few considerations:

1. It is easier to walk in the way of the majority – Anti-conformity has become less and less in the sense of deciding to live for Christ in a godless society.  The truth is, authentic Christians who not only claim Christianity but live it has become less common.  Now, pressure from a growing trend of those who are secular humanists and who believe in the “live and let live” mentality, has been applied to those not willing to bend.  One reason why the gateway to destruction is so broad, is because the road to pleasure and acceptance from society is easier.  It isn’t popular to stand up for Jesus Christ and it never was.  Even more so now, taking a stance against “gay marriage”, abortion, and other sins that have become socially acceptable puts one on the fringes of society. However, Jesus understood that even if society chooses to perish, the way to life would yield eternal security in addition to a better life on Earth.

2. Sin is enjoyable – As mentioned, living in a life of sin appeals and pleases the flesh.  If sin didn’t feel good, then most wouldn’t engage in it.  It is our sinful nature which calls out to us to fulfill the desires of the flesh.  Often times, sin entices us through temptation.  As James 1:14 says in the NIV, “but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed.” Sin resides within us because of the original nature passed down from Adam & Eve.  It is the sin that brings pleasure in the perspective of one who is walking in ungodliness.  There are many who entertain and even allow the pleasures of the flesh to direct their lives – however it eventually leads to a destructive lifestyle.  The results of living in a life of sin is one of a depraved mind, a seared conscience, and ultimately a spiritual and physical death.

3. The lies of satan are accepted as truth – Satan is a crafty individual who understands how to use various tactics to deceive.  John 8:44 describes satan as the “Father of lies.” In fact, in the very beginning satan lied and deceived Adam & Eve.  In Genesis 3:4-5, satan in the form of a serpent is speaking to Adam & Eve.  In the exchange, satan attempts to manipulate them by twisting the word of God.  God’s original command to Adam & Eve was not to eat the fruit from the tree of The Knowledge of Good and Evil, or they would die.  However, here is what satan says in response to this: (NIV) “The serpent said to the woman, “You surely will not die! “For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” Satan told a half truth when he said that they would not die.  He was correct in that Adam & Even would not die after eating the fruit.  However, what he did not say was that there would be a spiritual death that would be the result of their disobedience. Satan often twists God’s word in order to deceive those who are willing to accept his lies. As a result, many walk in a path that is full of those who are also deceived.

So, these three elements play into the reason for a wide path to destruction. As the Bible says, there are few that find the path to life.  Most follow the trends of a world that is living in sin, however there is a cost that comes with disobedience.  Jesus Christ died for that cost, so that you wouldn’t have to pay it.  Satan will not tell you the damage that can be done when you sin and remain in disobedience.  Instead, he withholds the truth and speaks lies so that he can ensnare those who are willing to follow.

All of us have a choice of whether to surrender to God through Jesus Christ, or to remain in our sinfulness.  The reward for turning to Christ is life and life abundantly. You have been redeemed because of Jesus Christ, but it is up to you to accept His gift of salvation.  You can live under the grace, protection, and love of God once you have turned from your wicked ways.  Walking in the popular path is what brings pain, confusion, and chaos.  Choose life, and choose the less popular road to life.

Allowing Jesus to Lead You As the Good Shepherd

ID-100127940In October of 2005, American Idol winner Carrie Underwood released the popular song “Jesus take the wheel.”  It was a song that was played on various radio stations and was downloaded repeatedly.  This Grammy award-winning song received the status of double platinum in the U.S., and was certified as Gold in Canada.  It was a song that provoked the notion that we all need the guidance of Jesus, but we must surrender in order for our lives to find direction. In the chorus of this song the lyrics are as follows:

“Jesus, take the wheel
Take it from my hands
Cause I can’t do this on my own”

“I’m letting go
So give me one more chance
To save me from this road I’m on
Jesus, take the wheel”

Like this song, the scripture of Psalm 23 which is a familiar passage reminds all of us that we need the guidance of God in our lives. The Bible makes it clear that the Lord is indeed the Good Shepherd over the flock of those who are willing to follow Him.  In the first two verses of Psalm 23 it says in the NIV, “The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters,” The key word in this scripture is “lead.” The Lord is there to lead us and guide us.

If you read further it says in verse 3, “he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake.” We should look at God as one who will lead us and guide us. Often times we attempt to steer or guide our own lives into a certain direction. Have you ever heard of the phrase, “I am the captain of my own ship?” Those who operate in such a manner are destined for failure, because they are leading themselves without the one who can steer them away from calamity.  

In John 10, Jesus is speaking to Pharisees about the concept of being the Good Shepherd.  In the beginning verses, Jesus gives the example that anyone who tries the enter the sheep pen by any other means is a thief and a robber.  He then goes on to say that the sheep know the voice of the shepherd and they follow, but the voice of a stranger they will not follow. In verse 7 Jesus says, (NIV) “Therefore Jesus said again, “Very truly I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep.”  In verses 14-15 He says, “I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me— just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep.”

What Jesus is saying is, that He is the good shepherd.  He is the one who leads, guides, and protects those who are within His fold.  Our lives have meaning and direction when we are willing to submit to the leadership of Christ.  There are so many voices that are calling out to us, trying to get us to veer off course. However, if you are in Christ and have accepted Him as Lord and Savior, then you will learn to hear the voice of the Good Shepherd through relationship.

Everyday, voices in the world call us with the attempt to get our attention.  From the media, to sources on the internet, to those within our lives.  These are sources that are vying for our attention with the effort to lead and command a following.  The fact is, our world has become built on the element of “following” others.  For example, Twitter has etched the word “follow” in the minds of many which has caused the campaign of “Follow us on Twitter.” This isn’t to say that social networking is a bad thing, however the goal shouldn’t be to follow after the things of this world.

Instead, our lives should be centered around a Holy God who leads us and guides us.  It is God who assists us in avoiding the pitfalls of life. Seeking after the things of this world and following the order set in place, will always lead to confusion and eventual ruin. However, as verse 3 says in Psalm 23, the Lord guides us along the right paths for His name sake.  If we are willing to give up our own way, and acknowledge God and His sovereignty, then He will guide us on His righteous path.

The path of a sin filled life is one of calamity.  There are so many in our society today that are seeking peace and attempting to lead their own lives. However, many do not find peace but they find trouble.  Instead of finding a lack of peace, Psalm 23 verse 2 says that the Lord leads us beside still waters.  This means, God leads us in the way of peace.  To see a body of water that is still is to focus on an entity that is calm or peaceful.

There is one major attribute of the Good Shepherd that we should not overlook and that is, His willingness to find us where we are. In Luke 15 verses 3-7, Jesus is speaking to tax collectors, sinners, and Pharisees when He gives what is called the “Parable of the Lost Sheep.” In this parable He says in verses 4-7:

(NIV) “Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.’ I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.” 

This is what the Good Shepherd does for all of us.  He seeks to find us because we are lost in our sin.  While there will be those that remain in their sin and will be lost, God never stops looking for each individual. The invitation to receive salvation and to be welcomed into the fold is open to all.  As the above scripture points out, the Good Shepherd will leave the rest of the flock to go after the one who is lost.

That is how much God loves you and I.  He loved you so much that He sent Jesus Christ to die on the cross for your sins. It is in that act of love that we have the opportunity to be brought back to God through connection with Christ.  Are you lost and wandering in the ways of this world?  Have you tried every method to achieve peace and stability only to find that nothing works? The best way to find peace and stability is to accept Christ as your savior.  The Good Shepherd, He is waiting for you.

Your Debt Was Paid on Credit Through Jesus Christ

The credit card has become a common means to purchase goods.  In America and even around the world, the credit card is a useful tool to not only pay in expediency but to also purchase and pay later. It was designed so that the consumer could purchase an item while simultaneously allowing the debt that they owe to be paid for by the institution that they are borrowing from.  However, there is a catch as it relates to credit card usage.

The use of any credit card will involve the following stipulations:

1. Every lending institution offers an interest rate –  This means that upon purchase, the lender applies interest which is based on the fact that the borrower is using their service. You can think of interest as a surcharge that is instituted throughout each month of the billing cycle. An interest rate gives the lender a percentage of money in return.  If a person’s creditworthiness is exceptional then they will benefit from a lower interest rate which means the lender yields less of a return.  However a higher interest rate is based on a person’s lack of creditworthiness, meaning that the lender will earn more in interest.

2. The consumer must pay the lender back for the debt owed – Upon every purchase, the institution expects that the borrower pay them back in full for the service rendered.

While a credit card may be a useful tool in a moment of emergency or even convenience, it can be dangerous to ones financial health depending on how it is used. If you look at the credit card in its essence, it is nothing more than an opportunity for lenders to take advantage.  While you pay and owe a debt, they incur revenue from the interest rate and your debt that is paid.  However, there is one such individual who does not operate as a common lender does, and that is Jesus Christ.

In 2 Corinthians 5:21, the Apostle Paul states the following about Jesus Christ:

(NIV)“God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” 

Jesus Christ was not only given as a sacrifice in the place of you and I, but He essentially became the sin that emanates from our very existence.  All of us were born into sin because of the disobedience of Adam & Eve.  As a result, we carry the same lineage that was passed down through their actions.  The bad news is that because of our lineage, we have become products of Adam & Eve which also means that we inherit the consequences because of our sinful nature.  The consequences are that of a life that is destined for destruction because of our sinful state.  However, there is great news for you and the rest of humanity.

There is a term which is called “The 2nd Adam.” As the Bible records, Adam did not follow God’s original order which was not to eat from the tree of the Knowledge of Good & Evil.  However, because Eve ate from the tree and Adam followed her, sin entered into the world through Adam & Eve but primarily because of Adam’s disobedience.  So, as a result, sin became a by-product of Adam’s actions which set in motion the consequences of sin.  The term, “The 2nd Adam” comes into play when Jesus Christ is introduced as the savior of the world’s sin.

Essentially, Jesus is called the 2nd Adam because He is the alternative to the 1st Adam. To get a better picture, the Apostle Paul explains the difference between the first human which was Adam and Jesus Christ.  In Romans 5: 12-17 Paul says the following:

(NIV) “Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned — To be sure, sin was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not charged against anyone’s account where there is no law. Nevertheless, death reigned from the time of Adam to the time of Moses, even over those who did not sin by breaking a command, as did Adam, who is a pattern of the one to come. But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many! Nor can the gift of God be compared with the result of one man’s sin: The judgment followed one sin and brought condemnation, but the gift followed many trespasses and brought justification. For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God’s abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ!”

What Paul is saying in the above scripture is that death and condemnation are the result of the 1st Adam or the original human who sinned.  It is because of Adam’s disobedience that we are all born into sin.  This means, our destiny before Jesus Christ was to accept eternal damnation because of our sinful state.  However, once Jesus Christ came and was sacrificed on the cross for our sin, it was His death and resurrection that turned the tide of the original condemnation.  In the above scripture, it is apparent that Jesus is the one who gives life rather than death.

So, the principle of “The 2nd Adam” is that Jesus Christ broke the chain of sin and condemnation when He died on the cross.  It was because He became sin for us and he took my debt and yours, we no longer have to live in condemnation nor are we doomed to destruction.  Just as the lending institution takes the payment of what we wish to purchase, Jesus Christ has done the same thing.  The difference however between lending institutions and Jesus Christ is that we are not obligated to pay back the debt.

Creditors have the position of receiving your pay once the billing cycle begins so they can be paid back (with interest) in return for their services.  However, the great thing about Jesus is that He paid a debt that you and I owe.  Since we were all born into sin, the original judgment was and is that we would be condemned.  However, the alternative is that Jesus Christ became the substitute for the debt that we owe.  The Bible says in Romans 3:22 that through faith in Jesus Christ we are made righteous.

You have an opportunity to be made righteous because of Christ.  We are not saved by works or trying to be a “good person”.  We are saved by grace and every human has an opportunity to be saved.  As long as humanity remains in its sinful nature and disobedience, then of course we shall not experience an escape from destruction.  While Christ’s sacrifice took the debt that you and I owe, it is still up to us to make a decision to repent.  By repenting of our sin and turning away from it, then the power of sin is no longer effective in our lives.

If you haven’t accepted Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior, take the time to accept this gift of life.  It doesn’t cost you anything to accept this gift.  The only thing you must do is ask for forgiveness, turn from your sin and live a life that is pleasing to God.  The gift of life has already been paid for on credit through Christ.  In return, you will have a life that is full of abundance and eternal security.  Choose life by accepting this precious gift. For those of us who have already accepted it, we are the beneficiaries of this gift of life. It is open to all who will receive.  Choose Jesus Christ and find out what this gift of life can afford to you if you are willing to accept it.

Jesus Christ – The Solid Foundation

ID-10078699When building a house, there must be attention to detail. Each part of the house from the inside out, should be built with a focus on structural integrity.  From the walls, to the flooring, to the external siding of the home – there are many pieces to a home which must be integrated for it to be habitable. However, the most important part of any home or even building is that of its foundation.

A foundation as it concerns any building or structure is the element that provides stability. Using the example of a house, a good foundation is one that is rooted underground which allows the structure to withstand not only the test of time but also external forces (i.e. rain, wind). A solid foundation is one that has the ability to uphold the weight of the structure, which means that it is not easily burdened.  Conversely, a building or house that does not have a firm foundation is one that is vulnerable.

If a foundation is not properly rooted or sturdy then it is likely that the structure will collapse or face some sort of damage.  As a result, those that reside within the structure are at risk of injury and even death if crumbling occurs.  Thus, having the appropriate foundation for any structure will prevent the decaying process which means that each resident is safe from internal or external calamity.

Our lives also need a firm foundation, but in the spiritual sense.  Just as any home or building requires a sturdy foundation to remain free from structural damage, we must also incorporate the appropriate foundation in our lives. That foundation is The Rock, or Jesus Christ.  In Matthew 7: 24-27, Jesus is speaking to a crowd when he teaches by giving a parable.  He is teaching on the principle of the wise and foolish builders. However, throughout chapter 7 of Matthew, Jesus teaches on various principles which includes judging others, asking and knocking, true and false prophets, true and false disciples, and the wide and narrow gate. It is only after teaching these principles that Jesus alludes to the parable of the wise and foolish builders. In verses 24-27 Jesus says the following:

(NIV)“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.” 

In this passage, Jesus illustrates by giving a comparison of two individuals. The first individual he mentions is a person who built their house on a solid foundation (In this case a rock). Based on the solid foundation, the individual’s house was able to withstand the external threats because of what it was built upon.  On the flip side, the other individual who built their house, did so on sand.  As a result, the house “fell with a great crash” because the foundation was vulnerable.

There are a lot of foundations that the world offers to all of us.  Many attempt to build their lives on wealth or material gain, social status, sex, pleasure, drugs, and a whole host of falsities.  Such foundations only lead to spiritual and physical ruin. That is because a foundation that is rooted in temporary pleasure will eventually lead to a collapse.

Jesus Christ is the best foundation that you and I can build our lives upon.  He is the one that gives stability and direction in life.  Satan will not give you insight into the damage that is done when you build your life on a shaky or vulnerable foundation. Everyday, millions attempt to surround their lives with foundations that are weak and unstable. As a result, their lives begin to crumble because the foundation they live upon cannot withstand the weight or the external influences that occur.

In Acts chapter 4, the Apostles Peter and John are seized and brought before the Sanhedrin Council for preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ. While standing before the council, Peter gives the following proclamation in defense of Jesus Christ in verses 9-12:

(NIV) “If we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a man who was lame and are being asked how he was healed, then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed. Jesus is “‘the stone you builders rejected, which has become the cornerstone.’’ Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.”

What Peter meant was that Jesus Christ is the cornerstone for all of humanity. If you look through the book of Matthew, you will see that Jesus was rejected by the world despite being the actual remedy for the sins of the world.  As Peter said, salvation cannot be found in anyone else.  Jesus Christ is the only one who can save because He paid the ultimate sacrifice.

The word “cornerstone” is meant to denote the piece that upholds every structure. Jesus Christ was given the name of “cornerstone” because He is the one who holds every life together despite the external influences that may arise.  Going back to the example of a building or a home, it is the very concept of having a firm foundation that Christ embodies.  Without a cornerstone or foundation that is firm, then the entire structure folds from the inside out, or from the outside in.

Is your life built on the foundation of Jesus Christ?  Or are you searching through the world to find solace and stability? The world cannot give you the type of structure that you are in need of.  In fact, the structure or system that the world provides is ever-changing. It is designed to ensnare all of its followers, just to leave them in ruins at the end of it all. Various laws and measures that are passed do not incorporate stability.  In fact, much of the governmental structures are failing because they are not built upon the one and true foundation which is Jesus Christ.

However, even outside of governmental corruption, there are many who choose to plan their lives on their own foundations.  The fact is, you and I cannot build a foundation that is solid enough to withstand the changes of life. Only in Christ Jesus can you have a life that is stable and secured.  If you have not accepted Jesus in the pardon of your sins, take the time to release your sin before Christ and turn from your wicked ways. Only then will your soul be secured, and your life will be built upon The Rock which is Jesus Christ.

True Surrender – Giving Up to Gain

Most who have seen a white flag being raised, know it to be a symbol of surrender. The white flag has been used for centuries as a means to signify the end of a conflict by giving up one’s quest to achieve victory.  It is the admittance that one no longer has the will to fight and that the adversary that they have fought against is superior.

In our lives, we too are in a battle.  Spiritually, you and I are caught between the enemy of our soul (Satan) and the love of a Holy God who wishes to commune with us in a relationship.  Every day a war is waged for our mind, our freedom, and our eternity.  Whether you realize it or not, your eternity is constantly being decided each day that you live.  Whether you will spend it in God’s presence in Heaven, or in eternal damnation and separation with Satan in Hell – the choice you and I make can determine where we will spend our spiritual life after a physical death.

In Luke 9: 23-24 (NIV), Jesus is talking to His Disciples when he says:

“Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it.”

To follow Christ and to follow God’s will, you must do as Jesus said in verse 23, which is to “deny yourself”.  Jesus uses the words, “take up their cross daily” which means to crucify the flesh and to bear the weight of the call into the body of Christ.  He uses the imagery of the cross, because when Jesus was crucified He died so that our sins could be forgiven. After His death, He rose again which represents new life.  Galatians 5:24 says  in the NIV, “Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.” So, we are to crucify our flesh by submitting ourselves to God daily.

The crucifixion of one’s flesh or self-denial is among one of the hardest things that we as humans can do.  It is due to our sinful nature that our flesh is proud and unwilling to yield to the Spirit of God.  Romans 7:18 says in the NIV, “For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out.” It is because of our sinful nature which was passed down by Adam & Eve, that we are unable to surrender without opposition.

Daily, there are many examples of those who fight in order to maintain what is believed to be “freedom” or “control”.  However, with all of the chaos that our world portrays, there is hardly any freedom or control that comes when we fail to surrender to God. Much of the distress that is shown in our society, is because of unrepentance and pride. Humanity in its fleshly nature is too proud to surrender itself to God.  A great example of pride is that of the common atheist.

Atheists are those who stand on the notion that God does not exist because there isn’t concrete evidence of His existence.  However, the element of pride enters the picture because those who are atheists would rather avoid accountability to someone who is higher.  Essentially, the idea that someone is higher than humanity is absurd in the mind of someone who doesn’t believe. As a result, a life without accountability is lived – however the danger in living as such is that consequences from sin result in both a physical and spiritual death.

Romans 8:7 says in the NIV, “The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so.” Since we are born into sin, then the art of surrender does not come easily.  To surrender, one must be willing to relinquish their pride, and admit that they themselves are a sinner. The difficult part is acknowledging any wrongdoing which is usually concealed through active denial and a continuation of sin.  However, just as Jesus said to deny ourselves, there are two principles that He also references when we are at the crossroads of a decision.

After Jesus gives the command to deny oneself and take up their cross on a daily basis, Jesus also utters the phrase, “For whoever wants to save their life will lose it”. To save one’s life means to believe that they are in control, or that they are their own savior. Secular humanism involves the thought that humanity has the ability to reason and conjure up solutions outside of any other deity (in this case God).  It is the refusal to admit that one needs a savior or that one must bow in a surrendered position.

When Jesus mentioned the above phrase, He meant that anyone who was adamant about believing in their own ability to save would eventually lose their life.  We cannot save ourselves because the remedy for salvation is Jesus Christ.  If we as humans could save ourselves from destruction, then much of the chaos we have seen throughout the existence of life would have been solved a long time ago.  However, it is because of the sin that remains within humanity, that we have mass casualties in war, violence that is uncalled for, injustice in societies around the world, and other sins which are a result of human pride.

However, Jesus offers the remedy in a second phrase when He says, “but whoever loses their life for me will save it.” What He means is that in order to receive salvation, the element of surrender must come into play.  To lose one’s life in this context means, to give up their own way of living and thinking, to surrender everything to God through Jesus Christ.  The reward of surrender is a life of stability, peace, and, of course, a life of eternal security with God. 

To lose your life as Jesus says, is to give up everything for the cause of Christ.  When Jesus called the original Disciples, he beckoned them from the lives that they had already known.  Many of them were entrenched in their occupations and family lives. However, the call of Jesus was one that meant leaving everything behind to follow Him. In doing so, all of His Disciples were used mightily to accomplish the great commission. Even Judas who was the traitor who sold Jesus for 30 pieces of silver, he too was used in order to accomplish the crucifixion of Christ. Had the Disciples refused their calling, they would not have furthered the Gospel of Jesus Christ during their time or in future generations.

God is calling you to a life that is surrendered and free from the power of sin. There are so many tragedies and acts of sin that are plaguing our society today.  In the mind of the person who is unrepentant, they can’t seem to figure out why so many things are occurring in our world.  However, once your life is surrendered to God through Jesus Christ, then and only then will your eyes see the truth of why our world is the way it is. You will also be secured eternally, and your life will be a living testament of the power of a good and Holy God. Wave the white flag, and give your life to Christ to experience a life that is made new.
