ID-10033867Throughout the world, there are various standards that are used for measurement. For example, metric units such as kilometers (km) are used to determine the amount of distance that one travels. Or, the metric unit known as a kilogram (kg) which is used to determine weight. The metric system is used worldwide in order to measure distance and weight. In most school systems, the use of what is known as a ‘ruler’ is used so that students can measure the distance of an object.

A ruler generally uses centimeters, millimeters, or inches to measure distance. A ruler can also be used to draw a straight or an angled line rather than drawing a curved line. It is the ruler that allows the user to maintain a level of order when drawing and even measuring. If one were to attempt a straight line without a ruler, the chances are that the line would be flawed rather than linear. Without the metric system or even the ruler, then it would be difficult to estimate how large or small an object is.

Spiritually speaking, the creator of the universe and all things that are not man-made is the standard that supersedes all standards. God Almighty has a standard for humanity which resides within His Word. God’s standard is designed for all of us to follow, however, because of humanity’s inclination to sin based on our sinful nature, the standard that God has put into place is often ignored or rejected.

There are two scriptures that should be examined as it relates to honing in on God’s standard for humanity to follow. The first comes from the book of 1 John 2, verse 16 which says the following:

(ESV) “For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions—is not from the Father but is from the world.”

In this passage which is in verses 15-17, the Apostle John is encouraging Christians not to love the world or the things of the world. What John means is that we who are in Christ should not love the desires of the flesh or even the pride in Earthly possessions. To love temporary things and even to indulge in our sinful nature is to essentially live by the standard that satan has set for the world to follow.

A standard is a way to measure or it is a directive that we are to live by. The ways of this world are hinged upon appealing to our flesh rather than to the growth of our Spirit through the influence of the Holy Spirit and God’s Word. John says that the things or the ways of this world are not from God the Father, but they are from the world. Who is it that sets the pace of a godless society? It is none other than satan who is ‘the god of this age’ as 2 Corinthians 4:4 says.

Satan has deceived many by instituting his standard which is steeped within our sinful nature. This is why many are following various trends that are inherently against God’s decrees because the standard of this world is not godly. Homosexuality, adultery, lying, murder, sexual immorality and other sins have become approved by our world system. While there may be laws that are put into place to suggest that order has been established, the truth is that many nations are operating in lawlessness. As a result of such lawlessness, disorder and misconduct become the norm within a godless culture.

So, it is important to understand that the ways of this world are the complete opposite of God’s standard. However, the question then becomes, ‘What is God’s standard for those who are willing to follow Him?’ Mark Chapter 7 is one of many scriptures that directly answers the question of what God’s standard is for all of humanity to follow.

In Mark chapter 7, Jesus addresses a group of Pharisees who challenge Him regarding tradition and ritual. One of the Pharisees had noticed that some of the disciples were not following the Jewish tradition which was to fully wash their hands before eating. So, Jesus was asked concerning this issue. In this chapter, Jesus made it clear in verses 17-19 that it isn’t the food that we eat that defiles our body but what comes out of our heart.

The Pharisees were very legalistic and followed the Mosaic law which put them in spiritual bondage. However, Jesus made it clear to them that their religiosity was an issue spiritually because they were doing things based on ritual, but their hearts had not changed. Here is what Jesus said in response to the Pharisees challenge:

Verses 20-23:

(NLT) “And he said, “What comes out of a person is what defiles him. For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness. All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.”

What Jesus said is that a person is defiled by what comes out of their heart. All of these sins are named to point to the fact that these are sins that result from our sinful nature. We are all born into sin which means we are prone to do any of these sins Christ names or even other sins He did not name. So what is the standard that God wants humanity to follow?

The standard that God has set in place for us is none other than Holiness and righteousness. The sins that Jesus names do not line up with Holiness or righteousness. In order for us to fully reach and institute God’s standard in our life, we must not only follow God’s Word by knowing His commands, but we must spend time with God daily. Spending time with God will increase your spiritual maturity and His presence in your life.

As a result, you will begin to live righteously and Holy as God requires because you are doing so in His power. You are also operating out of a spiritual rebirth through Christ. The reason we must be reborn spiritually is because we are born into sin by default. However, God’s standard which is Holiness and righteousness begins to be how we live when we immerse ourselves in His presence and in His word.

The standard of God is the complete opposite of satan’s standard which is what the world follows. Those who are not in Christ cannot live according to God’s standard because they are not controlled by the Holy Spirit. The Bible says in 1 Corinthians 2:14 that the things of the Spirit are foolishness to the person who does not have the Spirit which is the Holy Spirit.

The reason why so much sin has run rampant is because the heart of many has become hardened by their sinfulness. However, God desires that we seek Him and follow His standard for living. Just like a ruler is a measuring tool or a standard for maintaining linear lines when drawing, God’s decrees are meant to do the same for our lives. God wants to rule and have dominion in our lives, but we must relinquish control.

If you don’t know Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior then you are operating by a worldly and sinful standard. The standard that brings satisfaction and complete safety is the one that God has designed. Our world is growing increasingly chaotic because of humanity’s unwillingness to allow God to rule. Many are clamoring for peace and safety but only in Christ will they find it. Accept Jesus Christ and believe that He is Lord and allow God’s standard to be the basis for your life.

Today, a woman by the name of Kim Davis has become a national news story for her open and unabashed defiance against same-sex marriage. In Rowan County Kentucky, Davis served as a court clerk in a Federal statehouse. As a part of her job, Davis was ordered to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, however, since the ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court in June, it is now legal for same-sex couples to be married. As a result of Davis’s defiance, she not only received public and private scrutiny but now she resides in prison.

Kim Davis was questioned by a same-sex couple who wanted to know the authority that Davis had to deny them a marriage license. Her response was that she was operating “Under God’s authority.” Davis made it clear from the very beginning that her stance was firmly rooted in her alignment with the commands and principles of God’s Word. However, as a result of her stance to comply with godly values, she was persecuted for the faith.

In the book of 1 Peter Chapter 3, the Apostle Peter touches on the subject of suffering for doing good. “Doing good” is meant to denote the active participation in seeking to exemplify a life of God’s righteousness. Verses 13-18 adequately explain what we as Christians should do and how we ought to approach persecution at the hands of unbelievers.

Verses 13-14:

(NLT) “Now, who will want to harm you if you are eager to do good? But even if you suffer for doing what is right, God will reward you for it. So don’t worry or be afraid of their threats.”

Peter makes it clear that when we who are in Christ suffer for the sake of Jesus Christ and His righteousness, we will be rewarded. There is a reward that God will give to every person who stands for His Holiness and His Word as they are persecuted by unbelievers.

Verses 15-17:

(NLT) “Instead, you must worship Christ as Lord of your life. And if someone asks about your hope as a believer, always be ready to explain it. But do this in a gentle and respectful way. Keep your conscience clear. Then if people speak against you, they will be ashamed when they see what a good life you live because you belong to Christ. Remember, it is better to suffer for doing good, if that is what God wants, than to suffer for doing wrong!”

Verse 18:

(NLT) “Christ suffered for our sins once for all time. He never sinned, but he died for sinners to bring you safely home to God. He suffered physical death, but he was raised to life in the Spirit.”

In examining the above verses of 15-18, there are a few principles that we can extract for understanding what the cost is for being a true disciple of Jesus Christ.

1. To be a disciple of Christ it will cost you your life – The Apostle Peter says “You must worship Christ as Lord of your life.” When you accept Christ as your Savior, you also accept Him as your Lord. This means that you are no longer operating under your own volition, but you have given your life unto God through Christ. To be a disciple is to give up your very life for the cause of Christ. Persecution against Christians isn’t a new phenomenon because it has occurred for centuries. However, even in our modern day, Christians are being persecuted for the faith.

There will be a day in America when those who are truly in Christ will experience persecution on the same scale that occurs overseas. While many are still under the false belief that America will always be a country of ‘religious freedom’ the fact is that we who are in Christ will be challenged. Just as Kim Davis was jailed for her stand against homosexuality, you and I who are in Christ may see the day that our belief in God and even the truth that we speak will be attacked. However, as disciples of Jesus Christ our lives will be given for the sake of Christ. This means literally and even in how we live daily.

2. Suffering comes with being a disciple of Christ – Peter says in this passage that suffering for doing what is right is better than suffering for doing what is wrong. The fact is that the element of suffering or persecution is a part of what it means to be a disciple. We live in an age in which many who claim Christianity are afraid to suffer nor do they want to. Instead, many have embraced various sins including homosexuality in order to appease the powers that be. However, doing so is to align yourself with wicked leadership which is akin to participating in sin itself.

Rather, God is calling each person who is truly serious about their relationship with Christ to follow Him and Him alone. Suffering is a consequence of standing against sinfulness because those who are in their sin are the very enemy of God because they are disobedient in what they say and do. Peter says that it is better to suffer for doing good than to suffer for doing what is wrong.

To suffer because of your sin is much worse because for one there isn’t a reward for suffering in sin. Only destruction and a life of a poor quality result from suffering in sin. To suffer in Christ is to reap a reward both here on Earth and in Heaven. God rewards those who suffer for Christ’s sake. Since we are in Christ, we too are to take on the same type of suffering that Jesus did which is to die to our flesh and to also experience persecution as He did.

3. The testimony of your life will show forth God’s glory – Peter says “Then if people speak against you, they will be ashamed when they see what a good life you live because you belong to Christ.” The fact is that a person who is a disciple of Jesus Christ will exhibit a lifestyle that will bring glory to God. Peter says that those who persecute you will be ashamed when they see the good life that you live because you and I belong to Christ. How we live and what we say speaks volumes to the world around us. If you and I are willing to stand up for Christ and against the deception and attacks of the enemy then God’s glory will shine in our lives.

It isn’t enough to merely claim the title of “Christian.” Rather, our lives must show others who God is and what God’s love looks like. Some believe that Kim Davis’s defiance is an act of hate. Those who are blinded from God’s truth will believe the lies of the enemy. Her choice not to issue marriage licenses to gay couples was strictly based off of God’s Word and Her obedience to Him. In standing up for God’s truth, she is embodying what it means to truly be a disciple and to give everything for the sake of Christ. Kim’s boldness will hopefully spark a national and even international response from Christians everywhere not to give into satan’s agenda.

The truth of the matter is, persecution will come to the life of every believer who is truly committed to being a disciple of Christ. The cost of being a disciple involves losing one’s reputation and their very life. All of us who are in Christ are called not only to identify with Christ but to actively pursue the cause of being a disciple of Christ. If you don’t know Jesus as your Lord and Savior, you have an opportunity to be a part of this great call. The cost of being a disciple is monumental, but the reward is greater than anything the world can offer.

Holy Boldness – Refusing to Give in to Fear and Intimidation

Bullying has been a phenomenon that has taken place for generations. Throughout history, the art of bullying has been built off of one or more individuals who assert a greater amount of power over those who are considered to be weaker. Regardless of a person’s age, bullying can occur and often does occur. Whether it be in the workplace, in one’s neighborhood, or even in school, bullying can happen to anyone. However, there is one thing that can and often deters a person who is a bully.

When an individual finally realizes that the treatment that they are receiving deserves a level of indignation and boldness, then that is when the bullying ceases. Contrary to popular belief, violence is usually not necessary to deter a person who bullies. Rather, it is the desire of the person who is pushed around to realize their self-worth and to stand up in courageousness against those who are seemingly in power. It is then that the bully retreats and begins to back down because a person who uses force or insults to dictate, feed off of the fear of others.

In the time that we are living in, there are many Christians who have given up their God given authority. Many have decided to capitulate to the lawlessness that many nations have incorporated in their culture. Instead of speaking the truth to the powers that be, many Christians have become silenced by the wickedness who represent the majority. In the book of Numbers chapter 13, 12 scouts are sent by Moses to survey the land of Canaan.

Canaan was a land that was promised by God to the people of Israel. The Israelites were told that they would inhabit the land. In verses 1-21 of this chapter, Tribal leaders were sent to Canaan in order to give a report of the land and its inhabitants. Here is what the leaders reported:

Verses 27-29:

(NLT) “This was their report to Moses: “We entered the land you sent us to explore, and it is indeed a bountiful country—a land flowing with milk and honey. Here is the kind of fruit it produces. But the people living there are powerful, and their towns are large and fortified. We even saw giants there, the descendants of Anak! The Amalekites live in the Negev, and the Hittites, Jebusites, and Amorites live in the hill country. The Canaanites live along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea and along the Jordan Valley.”

Notice that the leaders say that the land is “flowing with milk and honey.” This meant that the land was prosperous and plentiful.  Also take note of the inhabitants of the land. The leaders stated that the inhabitants were powerful and that they were giants.

Verse 30:

(NLT) “But Caleb tried to quiet the people as they stood before Moses. “Let’s go at once to take the land,” he said. “We can certainly conquer it!”

Caleb who was one of the spies that Moses had sent to Canaan believed that they were capable of possessing the land. However, notice the rebuttal in the final verses:

Verses 31-33:

(NLT) “But the other men who had explored the land with him disagreed. “We can’t go up against them! They are stronger than we are!” So they spread this bad report about the land among the Israelites: “The land we traveled through and explored will devour anyone who goes to live there. All the people we saw were huge. We even saw giants there, the descendants of Anak. Next to them we felt like grasshoppers, and that’s what they thought, too!”

Notice that in the last verse the leaders felt as if they were miniscule or quite incapable of conquering the land. The report that the leaders gave was as the scripture said a “bad report.” Essentially, most of the Tribal leaders were afraid of their opposition because they saw themselves as smaller compared to the giants. Thus, they believed they couldn’t possess the land nor did they think it was worth trying.

When you look at our world today, there are many things that can cause those who are in Christ to believe that the effort to proclaim the Gospel is simply not worth it. Some may believe that living for God and standing for God’s righteousness isn’t the path to take. If the majority of society is going in one direction, why shouldn’t we do the same? The answer to such a question is that God has given every Christian a responsibility.

The responsibility is none other than to stand firm in the faith which the Apostle Paul encourages us to do in 1 Corinthians 16:13. In Numbers, chapter 13, the Tribal leaders were of the belief that they could not conquer the land of Canaan because they were intimidated by the sheer size of the giants. Many Christians have assumed the same philosophy that the Tribal leaders had which is that they were incapable of doing what God had given them the power and ability to do.

God had already promised the land of Canaan to the Israelites, but fear and intimidation caused them to doubt that it was possible. In the context of having Holy boldness, you and I need to have the fearlessness that it takes to stand firm in the faith even in these times. The world is constantly showing signs of decay both morally and spiritually, and yet it is the same world that has silenced many in the body of Christ.

Instead, we who are truly in Christ must be willing to stand for God’s principles and choose not to give into what the world has dictated. Many fear persecution and criticism from the media or from unbelievers. However, in order for us to accomplish what God desires which is to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ to a dying world, we must stand unashamed. Christians should not look at the ratio of those who believe and those who don’t, and merely give up due to the majority choosing not to believe.

It is true that the trends are now against those who are seriously following Christ. However, that is not the baseline to follow as it relates to seeking God and following Him. Our basis for truth and spreading the Gospel should be hinged upon the mandate that God has given to us which is the Great Commission. Regardless of what laws are instituted to silence Christians, we must stand. Allowing ourselves to be intimidated by what has become ‘the law’ is not how God wants us to operate. While we are supposed to support and pray for our leaders, we should not forsake Godly principles.

Regardless of the sin that has become approved by society, we who are in Christ should remain authentic to the calling that God has given to us. Not only are we called to share the Gospel with everyone we meet, but we are to abstain from sin. This is not a time for the called of God to be ashamed of the Gospel or to shrink back in fear. The days are becoming more dangerous as we reach the coming of Jesus Christ.  Now is the time to stand for Christ and to do so unashamedly.

If you don’t know Jesus as your as your personal savior, then you are living in sin which separates you from the knowing God’s love. Now is the time for you to accept Christ’s precious gift of salvation while you have a chance. Once you have accepted this gift of life, then you will also be called to take a stand against the enemy and all who stand with Him. All of us who are in Christ must live by godly principles and we must do so with Holy boldness.

Throughout our time of living, there has been a multitude of technology that has assisted us in our daily lifestyle. From email to text messaging to the ability to research information via the internet. Another form of technology is that of the institution of having access to GPS. The acronym ‘GPS’ stands for ‘Global Positioning System.’ GPS technology is U.S. owned and it is designed to allow users of the system to achieve navigation through real-time results. It also utilizes satellite capability which allows each user to connect to navigation via a device (e.g. hand-held GPS).

Essentially, this technology was created with the intention to track a user’s whereabouts so that said user can find their destination with the guidance of the available technology. Each individual is located within the system and given a destination based on a pinpoint of their location. The course is then charted in which the best possible route is given to the user for them to follow on their journey.

Spiritually speaking, our lives are designed to be led but to be led by God. When you look at the world around you, there are so many ways that one can take to a point where one’s pathway can become convoluted. So many voices are calling out to you and I on a daily basis, however, the pathway that is certain is the one that is surrendered unto to God. It is only by God’s leading that we are able to avoid the catastrophe of a life that is led astray toward destruction.

In the book of Isaiah chapter 30, the account of Judah and its rebellion is given in the scripture. Judah was a Kingdom (also known as the Southern Kingdom) which was divided from the Northern Kingdom.  Both the Northern and the Southern Kingdom were originally made up of 12 tribes which comprised the people of Israel. The 12 tribes experienced disunity and division which resulted in the split of two Kingdoms with Judah being one of the Kingdoms.

In the first part of this passage, Judah is recorded as being in a rebellious state against God. The people of Judah wanted to make a treaty with Egypt in order to receive protection against the Assyrians. Isaiah had given a prophecy in chapter 10 about the Assyrians capturing Israel (the Northern Kingdom). In scripture, it was also prophesied that Judah (the Southern Kingdom) would also be captured by the Assyrians. So, as a result, the nation of Judah began to look to Egypt as their way out.

Verses 1-3:

(NLT) “What sorrow awaits my rebellious children,” says the Lord. “You make plans that are contrary to mine. You make alliances not directed by my Spirit, thus piling up your sins. For without consulting me, you have gone down to Egypt for help. You have put your trust in Pharaoh’s protection. You have tried to hide in his shade. But by trusting Pharaoh, you will be humiliated, and by depending on him, you will be disgraced.”

Verses 4-5:

(NLT) “For though his power extends to Zoan and his officials have arrived in Hanes, all who trust in him will be ashamed. He will not help you. Instead, he will disgrace you.”

The above verses point to the judgment and words of anger that God brought against Judah because they failed to trust in God. Instead, Judah sought Egypt that historically had been a pagan and godless society. For their disobedience against God, the people of Judah found themselves in a situation that was both destructive and uncertain.

In verses 8-17, the warning against rebellion is given to the people of Judah. The judgment that is given further stated what would occur if they chose not to follow and trust in God Almighty. However, in verses 18-30 there is a reverse to the judgment of what will occur if the people of Judah chose to trust in God and to follow Him.

Verses 18-20:

(NLT) “So the Lord must wait for you to come to him so he can show you his love and compassion. For the Lord is a faithful God. Blessed are those who wait for his help. O people of Zion, who live in Jerusalem, you will weep no more, He will be gracious if you ask for help. He will surely respond to the sound of your cries. Though the Lord gave you adversity for food and suffering for drink, he will still be with you to teach you. You will see your teacher with your own eyes.”

Notice what it says in verses 21-22:

(NLT) “Your own ears will hear him. Right behind you a voice will say, “This is the way you should go,” whether to the right or to the left. Then you will destroy all your silver idols and your precious gold images. You will throw them out like filthy rags, saying to them, “Good riddance!”

They key point of verses 21 and 22 is that the people will hear the Lord’s voice and God’s voice will utter the words, “This is the way you should go.” These words signify a directive and as the scripture says, that the people would destroy their idols because they would choose to be obedient unto the voice of the Lord.

As it relates to following the direction of God, there are blessings that come when we are obedient and when we follow God’s leading. In this particular passage of scripture, the people of Judah were self-reliant to the point that they trusted in another resource rather than trusting in God who is the source for all stability. There are many who are doing the same today.

Many are trusting in other resources whether it be their bank account, the economy, the media, or even themselves. As a result, the path that is taken is one that is unstable and it is no longer a path of certainty. If you look at the world around us, there are many problems that humanity faces. Part of it is because of the blatant sinfulness that humanity continues to engage in. However, despite the troubles that are apparent, trusting in God through Jesus Christ is what will institute safety and a pathway that remains uninhibited.

It is only when we choose to follow our own path or the paths of others that we fall short. Just like a GPS has a predetermined route, God has a predetermined path for you and I to follow.  However, if we deviate from that path then it is likely that we will experience a loss in time and a loss in our direction.  The world offers a system in which you can choose your own path.

The truth is, God also allows us the ability to choose what we will do with our lives. However, if we make all of our decisions without Him and His leading, then we will experience negative repercussions for our disobedience. The people of Judah rejected God’s direction and as a result they suffered at the hands of the Assyrians. However, those who chose God rather than their own path were spared.

We are living in a time in which we cannot afford to reject God’s Wisdom and the leading of the Holy Spirit. So many perils await us as we attempt to live in this life. However, with God’s help, you and I are able to navigate through the snares and pitfalls that the enemy presents to us.  If you don’t know Jesus Christ as your Personal Lord & Savior, you are not able to be led because you are in your sin. Accept Christ and allow God to lead you as you live in a world that is constantly changing.  Only in Christ are you able to maintain stability in addition to receiving the blessings that God has for you to obtain.

ID-10083143Most of us use some sort of alarm or alert to wake up in the morning. An alarm clock is a device that is designed to stimulate our senses in order to awaken out of a deep sleep. When we are asleep we are typically unaware of our surroundings. Of course, some are considered to be what is known as a ‘heavy sleeper’ which means that it is difficult to wake up from a session of sleep. Others are considered to be what is known as a ‘light sleeper’ which means that their pattern of sleeping is easily broken and aroused by any sort of noise or movement.

However, regardless of the type of sleeper you are, the device known as an alarm clock provides the necessary stimulation to be awakened from your sleep. The alarm may or may not result in success because there are some who hear the alarm and either press the snooze button to gain an extra 15 minutes, or they turn the alarm off only to go back to sleep. More often than not, by ignoring the alarm it can cause one to be tardy for their destination because their focus is to sleep rather than to be awakened.

If we look at the world around us, there are many signs of a world that is constantly deteriorating before our eyes. Violence fills just about every nation and lawlessness seems to be abounding. Many forms of sin which God has stated throughout His Word have now become commonplace. So much so that even in some realms of Christianity such sins have either become acceptable or even practiced among those who claim to be in Christ. In the book of 1 Thessalonians chapter 5, the Apostle Paul is writing to believers in the church of Thessalonica.

Throughout this chapter, the Apostle Paul urges Christians to be aware of ‘The End Times’ or essentially Christ’s return. In verses 1-3, Paul says the following:

(NLT) “Now concerning how and when all this will happen, dear brothers and sisters, we don’t really need to write you. For you know quite well that the day of the Lord’s return will come unexpectedly, like a thief in the night. When people are saying, “Everything is peaceful and secure,” then disaster will fall on them as suddenly as a pregnant woman’s labor pains begin. And there will be no escape.”

In verse 1 the word ‘this’ is referring to the day of the Lord or Christ’s return. In this short passage, Paul says that the day of the Lord’s return will come unexpectedly as a thief in the night. This means that Christ’s return will be sudden and it will catch many who are not ready in an unaware position.

Also, notice that Paul says that many will say, “Everything is peaceful and secure,” which suggests that those who are not in Christ are seeing our world from the unbelieving standpoint. Basically, there are many who hear the truth and yet they do not believe that certain things such as the coming of the Lord will happen. If you look at the chaos that surrounds our world today, there are still those that do not and will not acknowledge the truth concerning the signs of the times.

As Paul says in verses 2-3, many will say that the time that we live in is peaceful and secure and yet those who are unaware will be met with the inevitable which is the return of Jesus Christ. Notice also what Paul says as he continues with this message of urgency:

(NLT) “But you aren’t in the dark about these things, dear brothers and sisters, and you won’t be surprised when the day of the Lord comes like a thief. For you are all children of the light and of the day; we don’t belong to darkness and night. So be on your guard, not asleep like the others. Stay alert and be clearheaded.”

Paul says that those who are truly in Christ are those who will not be caught off guard by Christ’s return. Essentially, this means that if you and I are following after the things of God and we are spiritually in tune with what God wants for our lives then we will be abreast of our changing world.

Paul says in verse 6, “So be on your guard, not asleep like the others. Stay alert and be clearheaded.” This is the crucial part of this blog post which is to point to the call that God has given to the body of Christ. God has called each person who is in Christ to not only spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ but to also be aware and fully knowledgeable about the signs of the times. Paul uses the word ‘asleep’ which means that he is stressing the point of maintaining an alert disposition.

The fact is that in our modern time the body of Christ has seemingly lost its focus. Many Pastor’s have lost the true meaning of what it means to be a messenger of the Gospel by adhering to teaching of prosperity and seeking to fill empty church pews. God is concerned with whether or not the Gospel is brought to the masses and preparing the body of Christ for what is to come.

All of the violence and even the weather patterns which have become increasingly worse are pointing to the signs of the times. They are also pointing to the abundance of sinful behavior.  However, the question is, is the body of Christ truly awake to what is happening in our world?  Or are we passively watching on the sidelines as our world imposes sin and immorality upon us? Those who are truly in Christ must stand up and stand together for the sake of the Gospel.

The call is to those who are serious about Christ and willing to give their very reputation and even their life for the cause of Jesus Christ. The world is seeking answers to the endless cycle of violence and tragedy. They are looking for a remedy by their human hands but you and I who are in Christ, we have the answer which is Jesus Christ.  9/11 was one of the moments in which the world was shaken to its foundation. Many Christians were asleep even at that time. Have we who are in the body fallen asleep again?

It is time for us to be awakened as Paul encourages us. For a final observation, Paul says the following in verses 7-8:

(NLT) “Night is the time when people sleep and drinkers get drunk. But let us who live in the light be clearheaded, protected by the armor of faith and love, and wearing as our helmet the confidence of our salvation.”

These two verses point to the fact that we who are in Christ are to be of the light or the light of Christ. If we are in the light, then it means we cannot be unaware of what is truly occurring within our world. Paul says that we are to be “clearheaded” and that we remain protected by arming ourselves in love, faith, and even the confidence in our salvation. Arming ourselves means that we are spiritually in tune and aware of what is taking place. The fact is that Jesus Christ will return again, but before that happens, we will see more sinfulness and consequences for such sin.

However, the good news is that Jesus Christ died for you and I so that we would be saved from our sin. Safety is only found in Christ which means that if you are not in Christ then you are vulnerable to what will occur as time goes on. If you haven’t accepted Christ, now is the time to do so. Each day that passes seems to grow worse and worse, but the hope that we have is in Jesus Christ. Life in Christ is better than a life lived in the unawareness that comes from being in sin.

On Wednesday, August 26th, a tragic murder shook the state of Virginia and even the United States as a whole. A man by the name of Vester Flanagan who also went by the name of ‘Bryce Williams’ fatally shot and killed two WDBJ-TV employees while on-air. The first victim was 24-year-old Alison Parker who was a news reporter. She was known as the ‘rising star’ in her particular field and was beloved by many of her colleagues, friends and family members. She was also in a serious relationship in which it seemed that she and her boyfriend were poised to enter the arena of marriage.

The second victim was 27-year-old Adam Ward who was a cameraman for the news station. Ward was also involved in a serious relationship and had recently become engaged to be married. The gunman acted with extreme violence and was later found to have committed the act out of anger and resentment over what he stated to be racial and even sexual harrassment during his tenure at the same news station. In the end, the gunman committed suicide while at the same time leaving those who witnessed the horrific news story to ask the question, ‘Why?’ Why is it that such tragedies like this occur every day? Why are we seeing an escalation of violence in our world?

The answers to such questions can be found throughout scripture. God’s Word leaves humanity with available answers to the hard questions of life. It is the map that helps us to navigate through the fiery trials that you and I face. God has given us His word but also Jesus Christ as the answer to the world’s problems. It is Christ who died and rose again in order to give you and I an opportunity to receive eternal life.

In the book of Colossians chapter 1, verses 15-17 sheds light on the questions and even the concerns that many have today as we see the brokenness in our world.

(NLV) “Christ is as God is. God cannot be seen. Christ lived before anything was made. Christ made everything in the heavens and on the earth. He made everything that is seen and things that are not seen. He made all the powers of heaven. Everything was made by Him and for Him. Christ was before all things. All things are held together by Him.”

The first observation to take note of is that the Apostle Paul says “Christ is as God is.” In this verse, Paul points to the fact that God and Jesus are essentially the same in their being although they are not the same in their function. The Holy Spirit, God, and Jesus are all one or they are triune in their being. So, Paul says that Christ made everything which includes the Heavens and the Earth. The reason this is so is because, in the very beginning, all 3 which comprise the Trinity existed and took part in the creation of everything that was not man-made.

So, if Christ made all things and as Paul says, “all things were made for Him”, then it also means that Christ holds all things together as Paul says in the last part of verse 17. What does Paul mean when He says that all things are held together by Him? You can think of it in the sense of someone who is the inventor or the architect of a product. The original person who creates a mechanism understands what it takes for said mechanism to work. He/she controls the inner workings of what was created because they have the sole responsibility of being its creator.

The reason that we are able to know that Jesus Christ holds everything together is because Christ is also equal with God. Christ is equal with God in being but not in function, however, He participated in the creation of humanity, the Heavens, and the Earth. The bottom line is that Christ is the answer to our chaotic world because He holds everything together. However, why is it that we see a myriad of tragedies on a daily basis? If God is in control as many Christians say, why do such travesties occur? In a previous post regarding ‘The Sovereignty of God’, it was explained to a degree as to why some things are allowed to happen. However, there are at least two other reasons as to why our world is seemingly in chaos.

1. Humanity is insistent on its rebellion against God – Whenever a nation or a group of people decide that they themselves want to be independent of God, they will find that their objectives are futile. Essentially this means that a person who desires to become their own god rather than submitting to God will be met with swift confusion and an eventual destruction. We are sinful beings from the very day that we are born. It is because of our sin that we are prideful which means we desire to operate separately from God who is the ultimate authority.

If you look at the massive increase in violence worldwide, many world leaders are seeking answers in their human wisdom and intellect. Even in America, there is once again a national debate regarding gun usage and who should have gun ownership. Even after Wednesday’s tragedy, many are pointing to ‘mental health’ as the culprit instead of seeking God to find that much of our issues are spiritual. The fact is, a generation of people are ascribing to humanism rather than submitting to God in obedience. Horrific tragedies occur because there is an abundance of sin throughout our world. The more humanity sins and is persistent in violating godly principles, the more we will see demonic spirits wreaking havoc. Until there is a willingness to bow down in humility, then healing will not come to our world.

2. The End Times – In previous posts there have been multiple references to ‘The End Times’ or ‘Signs of the End Times.’ It begs to be repeated because the message about Christ’s return must be taught and proclaimed. The increase in violence and the senseless tragedies that occur daily are a result of the signs of the times. It is up to each person who is in Christ to be open to not only understanding the times that we are living in but to prepare themselves and others for what is to come.

The Bible says in 2 Timothy 3:2 that there shall be an increase in wickedness and selfish behavior. The days that we are living in are the same as it was in the times of Noah. Each generation grows further and further away from God becoming godless in the human existence. As a result, more tragedies abound which leave many attempting to understand how such a loss of life can be conscionable. While many world leaders desire to end violence and live in world peace, the Bible shows us throughout various scriptures that these things must happen before the ultimate victory is won as satan is vanquished at the hands of Jesus Christ.

So, what is the answer to our chaotic world? The only answer to these issues is Jesus Christ. The media, politicians, and even everyday citizens are all wondering what the answer is. Many believe that we can solve these issues on our own. However, many historical facts throughout time have shown that humanity cannot fix these issues because many of the problems are inherently spiritual. The underlying fact is that a world that remains in rebellion against God can only result in the continuance of tragedies.

What occurred on Wednesday is indeed horrific and I am sure you and I wish that no one experience the loss of life that took place. At the same time, there are reasons as to why the violence will not cease. Unless we all surrender unto God with our lives and until Jesus Christ returns, our society and our world will only grow worse. It sounds like bad news, but the good news is that with Christ we are complete.

As the scripture of Colossians chapter 1, verses 15-17 state, Christ is the one who holds everything together. If you don’t know Jesus then your world is already vulnerable. Accept Christ who gave His life for you and experience safety in a time of confusion. Our world seeks answers in the human sense, but the true answers come from God Almighty. It is only in God through Christ that we can understand why these things happen and what God can do to change the course of our world.

More Than Mere Words – Hearing God’s Word and Doing What God’s Word Says

The phrases ‘Talk is cheap’ and ‘Actions speak louder than words’ are meant to denote the essence of conjoining action with words.  Basically, one can say something without actually doing something which in effect means that one’s words are meaningless. It is very easy to say that you will and yet your actions suggest that you won’t. For example, you might have the ambition to seek a particular career path which can be evident in your words but your actions might suggest that you are not as serious about the career path as you first mentioned.

The truth is that our words are meaningless if they do not show forth the actions that align with what we say. There are a couple of scriptures that we can examine which will point to the principle of not only hearing what God’s Word says but also putting it into practice.  The first scripture is James Chapter 1 and verse 22 which says:

(NLT) “But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves.”

It is important to understand the context of this verse and this chapter. James who is the writer of this passage wrote a letter to Jewish believers who were scattered throughout different countries. In chapter 1, James is writing to give both encouragement and instructions in verses 2-16. However, in verses 19-21 James gives instructions to fellow believers in the faith when he says the following:

(NLT) “Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry. Human anger does not produce the righteousness God desires. So get rid of all the filth and evil in your lives, and humbly accept the word God has planted in your hearts, for it has the power to save your souls.”

The key verse that transitions into verse 22 is verse 21 when James urges Christians to expel the sinfulness within our lives and to accept God’s Word in our heart. This is a call to accept or to grasp the principles of God. However, the qualifier which is verse 22 states that those of us who are Christians should not only hear what God’s Word says but we must do what it says.

Basically, each person who claims to be a Christian or claims to follow Christ must not only make the statement of their faith but they must actively pursue God’s righteousness and obedience unto Him. There are many examples of those who are ‘church goers’ or those who are ‘religious’ but their lives are not a true testament to what they profess. James says that if we hear God’s Word but do not do what it says then we are deceiving ourselves.

The deception that is very common today involves both the unbeliever and those who are not seriously following Christ in both word and deed. To be a Christian is to be the difference maker or to be separated from sinful living and those who are unrepentant in their sin. It is the abstinence from living in a godless disposition or even pacifying behaviors that are against God’s decrees.

The truth is, there are many who say that they believe but yet do not do as God’s Word says. John 14:15 says,

(NASB) “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.”

Much of what we see today is a contradiction of what scripture truly says compared to the lifestyle of those who claim Christianity. Those who claim to be in Christ and yet live in sinfulness are deceived into thinking that they are in the right position with God. However, as John says in chapter 14, our love for God is shown when we keep His commandments. God has not changed His standard of righteousness, but it is humanity that has adopted humanist ideas and operated in pacifism as it relates to sin.

Obedience unto God is not negotiable which is contrary to the way that many are living today. Especially in the Christian faith, it is paramount that the teaching of obedience and the rejection of sin is emphasized more than not. Our submission unto a Holy God is a major part of the test of our love for God. It isn’t enough to go to church Sunday after Sunday or attend Bible Study weekly only to operate in sinfulness after God’s Word has been spoken to you.

One of the tests that every believer must pass to show their love for God is through their obedience which is a result of their actions. However, if we know what God has given us to do both through His Word and the words spoken to us through the Holy Spirit and we don’t follow instructions then there is a price to pay. James 4:17 says the following:

(NLT) “Remember, it is sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it.”

This verse of scripture is short, but it is powerful because it brings accountability to you and I. James says that if you know what you should do and do not do it, then it is sin. Of course this short scripture is meant to be for believers, however, the key is that God’s Word invokes accountability and a standard that we who are in Christ ought to follow. It is considered sin if you know what God requires and yet you don’t do it.

The reverse to this is also that if you don’t know what God requires then you as a believer have a responsibility to understand God’s Word and know what His commands are for yourself. If we are going to show the world what the love of God looks like we must first love God with our whole heart, mind, and soul. God demands that we not only hear His truth  but that we actively personify what His truth says through how we live.

The world sees many in Christianity as hypocritical because many are guilty of professing a lifestyle that is Holy and aligned with Jesus Christ. Yet the same individuals that profess to have a relationship with Christ are the individuals that portray the same image as those in the world. In the life of every believer, there must be a clear distinction between what the world does and what we who are in Christ do. Much of the problem is that many who claim Christianity have lost their fear of God.

God has not changed His standards for Holiness or righteousness. The reverence that God requires is what we must adhere to because God is Holy in every part of His being. Therefore, we should be Holy as God is Holy which means to live in obedience as God gives us instruction through His Holy Word. Are you simply hearing God’s Word and not putting it into practice in your own life? The best testimony you can have is to symbolize the love of God through not only His love and grace unto others but a life that is submitted unto the commands that God gives.

For those of you who are not in Christ, if you don’t know the God of Holiness and righteousness then you have an opportunity to accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. Believe in your heart that Jesus is Lord and that He died on the cross and be redeemed from yoru sin. By doing so you are then able to be free from the chains of sin and you will know who this Holy and righteous God is.

What are You Hungry and Thirsty For?

ID-10036906All of us have experienced what it is like to be hungry or thirsty. For example, you may find yourself in a hurry to quench your thirst or satisfy your hunger to the point that you would settle for fast food. Or, you may decide to purchase a snack from a vending machine or a local convenience store. You may even take the time to consume a meal that you yourself have decided to cook. Regardless of what you decide to do, the goal is to quench your thirst and satisfy your hunger. To be thirsty and or hungry is to experience a normal bodily function which stems from our body telling us that we need to be nourished.

It is important to note that your livelihood and health are dependent upon the type of diet that you have. If you are constantly consuming food that is unhealthy, then your body will pay a price long-term. If you are eating healthy foods, then your body will benefit from the proper nutrition. The key is that our body requires not only food and water so that we can survive, but we must maintain a healthy and balanced diet to enhance the life that we have.

Spiritually speaking, we are all hungry and thirsty for something.  Whether we are seeking to fulfill the desires of our fleshly nature or we are seeking to please God through having an intimate relationship with Him through Christ. We are all hungering and thirsting for something. In the book of Matthew Chapter 5, Jesus is speaking to His Disciples as He gives what is known as the ‘Sermon on the Mount.’ Throughout this sermon, Jesus gives God’s truth through various principles designed to be for instruction regarding how to live.

In verses 3-10, Jesus gives what are known as ‘The Beatitudes.’ These are essentially blessings that come to those who exhibit certain traits or actions that line up with one’s commitment unto God.  Jesus says in verses 3-5:

(NKJV) “Blessed are the poor in spirit, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn, For they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek, For they shall inherit the earth.”

Verse 6:

(NKJV) “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, For they shall be filled.”

Verse 6 will be the focal verse for this post in order to extract the meaning of hungering and thirsting. In this particular verse, Jesus says that the person who hungers and thirsts for righteousness shall be filled. Another translation says it this way:

(NLV) “Those who are hungry and thirsty to be right with God are happy because they will be filled.”

What this scripture means is that anyone who is hungry and thirsty to be in the right position with God shall be filled. This word ‘filled’ also means to be satisfied. Basically, when you and I are seeking after the righteousness of God then we will find ourselves satisfied rather than longing to be filled by what the world has to give. What does it mean to hunger and thirst for righteousness?

When it comes to seeking God it means to seek God for His Holy presence with the intent to grow closer to Him and to become more like Him. It means that you are also aware of what God loves and what God hates. To hunger and thirst after righteousness is to seek after the things of God which means to live in holiness, to love God and others around you, to live in peace, to have joy and ultimately pointing the lost to Jesus Christ. It also means to abhor the very appearance of sinfulness.

When you and I are hungry or thirsty, we begin to seek or search for various methods to satisfy our desire. Verse 6 says that when we seek after righteousness or to be in the right position with God then we will be filled. To be filled is to be satisfied. The fact is that only a relationship with God through Jesus Christ will bring ultimate satisfaction. The reason is because you and I were created to worship God and to know Him in intimacy.

If you look at the world around us, there are constant examples of those who are seeking worldly pleasures that equate to brokenness. Many celebrities have wasted their lives achieving fame, money and self-gratification only to find emptiness. That is because the pleasures of sin were never meant to satisfy our soul. When God created you and I, He created us to love Him and to be loved by Him. The longing desire to know God is within our soul.  Some call it a ‘God-shaped hole’ which is a deep and unfillable hole that can only be filled by the presence of God.

Many are seeking after what this world has to offer. Whether it be the latest gadget, the newest fashion craze, or the abundance of money in your bank account, it is all vanity and it fades. Fulfillment only comes when your life is connected to God through Christ. He gives you purpose and a sense of being. When you are living for God’s righteousness and seeking to please Him, then you will be filled or satisfied.

You can think about the same concept of what occurs when you eat unhealthy food in the spiritual sense. Basically, when we are hungering and thirsting to fulfill our sinful desires we are sowing to the flesh. Galatians 6:8 says,

(ESV) “For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.”

If you are sowing to your flesh or actively participating in unrepentant sin then your flesh will reap corruption which means destruction. Basically, when you choose to have an unhealthy diet your body can no longer function normally. Spiritually speaking, you are operating out of a spiritual death when you are living in sin. The alternative is the eternal life and fulfillment that comes when we sow to the Spirit or seek after God’s righteousness.

The fact is that all of us are engaging in the seeking of either God’s righteousness or our sinful nature. You and I were born into sin which means that the desire to sin is innate within us. However, the remedy is Jesus Christ. We must submit ourselves unto Christ if we are going to break free from the chains of sin. Once Christ has been accepted as your Personal Lord & Savior, you must constantly subject yourself unto the power of the Holy Spirit which means seeking God daily through prayer, worship, and reading God’s Word.

If you don’t know Jesus Christ in the pardon of your sin, you can start a relationship with Christ by confessing your sin and believing in your heart that Jesus is Lord. We all experience hunger and thirst in the spiritual sense, but the question is, ‘What are you hungry and thirsty for?’ If you are hungry and thirsty for the pleasures of the flesh and you are fulfilling those desires then you are contributing to your own spiritual death. However, when you hunger and thirst after God’s righteousness you shall be fulfilled and have eternal life.

Unashamed of the Gospel of Jesus Christ

If you have been exposed to a certain truth then usually you would find it difficult to stifle the knowledge that you have gained. For example, if you found that there were certain foods or chemicals that proved to be dangerous to your health and the health of your family, you would probably find the time to discuss it with those closest to you. The reason is because the element of truth was divulged which means that you became aware of what was at one point destroying your health. You were unashamed in lifting the haze from the eyes of others. Even if it meant a rebuttal against your new found evidence, you chose to communicate the truth unashamedly.

We are living in a global society in which it seems that just about everything you can think of is permissible. Whether it be committing adultery, being homosexual or transgender, or even the beginning of approving marijuana as a legal drug – there are many behaviors and lifestyles that are seemingly no longer off limits. Our society has grown increasingly sinful to the point that whatever you feel is best is how you should live. However, the caveat in this mentality is that it is now expected that those who disagree with such lifestyles should not tell someone else ‘how to live their life.’

This is especially true for those in Christ. It seems that many Christians have become marginalized as it relates to speaking God’s truth to others.  Or, many have purposely sat on the sidelines and avoided the truth of Jesus Christ to avoid a confrontation with others. However, in the book of Romans chapter 1, the Apostle Paul gives his own statement regarding the Gospel of Jesus Christ and remaining unashamed of the Gospel.

In the first part of this chapter (verses 1-6) the Apostle Paul greets Christians in Rome via a letter that he had written. It is important to focus on what Paul says in verses 2-5 when he talks about the Gospel.

Verses 2-5:

(NLT) “God promised this Good News long ago through his prophets in the holy Scriptures. The Good News is about his Son. In his earthly life, he was born into King David’s family line, and he was shown to be the Son of God when he was raised from the dead by the power of the Holy Spirit. He is Jesus Christ our Lord. Through Christ, God has given us the privilege and authority as apostles to tell Gentiles everywhere what God has done for them, so that they will believe and obey him, bringing glory to his name.”

Notice that Paul says in verse 5 that God had given he and other Apostles the privilege and authority to spread the Good News to Gentiles everywhere regarding the things God has done for them. This was so they would believe and obey God which would bring glory to His name. The key word in this scripture is ‘privilege.’ The Apostle Paul understood that it was and is a privilege for all Christians to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ to those who are in their sin.

In this scripture, Paul also uses the term ‘Gentiles’ who were a group of people who were considered to be godless or pagan. There was a major divide between the Jews and the Gentiles because they both stood on opposite ends of the spectrum concerning salvation and how they lived. However, despite the historical implication between the two groups Paul understood that salvation was for all. (Inclusive of the Jews and Gentiles as verse 16 says.)

Going back to the scripture, Paul shows us that it is a privilege and an honor to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with those who are in their sin. Part of the reason why many Christians and Pastors have deviated from teaching and proclaiming the Gospel is because the sense of it being a privilege and an honor has become lost. How great is it that you and I who are in Christ have an opportunity to be representatives of Jesus Christ? God being the creator of the universe has picked you and I to proclaim His truth to a dying world. There is no other opportunity greater than that.

In verses 8-15 of chapter 1, Paul continues by stating that he longs for fellowship with Christians in Rome.  He also reiterates his willingness to spread the Good News to all which he sees as his obligation or duty as a representative of Jesus Christ. After verses 8-15, the key verses to focus on are verses 16-17.

(NLT) “For I am not ashamed of this Good News about Christ. It is the power of God at work, saving everyone who believes—the Jew first and also the Gentile. This Good News tells us how God makes us right in his sight. This is accomplished from start to finish by faith. As the Scriptures say, “It is through faith that a righteous person has life.”

Paul makes it clear that he is unashamed of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. In these two verses, he points to the fact that it is God’s power that is at work during the salvation process.  In addition to this, Paul mentions that the Gospel or the Good News is the message of how we as humans are redeemed or as he says “how God makes us right in his sight.” The process of the transformation from a sinner into a saint is done by faith as Paul concludes in verse 17.

However, the key point of this passage is that Paul was unashamed when it came to delivering the Gospel throughout the world. That is the same boldness and disposition that we as Christians need today. Too often, there have been too many cases of Christians who have capitulated to what the world desires. Instead, we who are unashamed and truly in Christ should push back against satan’s agenda.

If you examine the life of Jesus’ 12 Disciples, each one of them with the exception of the Apostle John, were martyred for the faith.  Basically, they gave their lives for the sake of the Gospel of Jesus. This is what seems to be missing in Christianity today. Many Pastors and church leaders are so focused on maintaining their membership that they have essentially forsaken the Great Commission.  God isn’t concerned with the number of members that a church has. His concern is whether or not the Gospel of Christ is being proclaimed and whether or not the image of God is being perpetuated in humanity.

It seems that the body of Christ today has lost the actual goal of Christianity. The goal is to preach and teach the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the lost. Instead, many have allowed a sinful world to dictate what can and cannot be declared publicly. The interesting thing is, many who are in their sin have become more vocal about what it is they believe. We are seeing new movements within our world that have nothing to do with instituting godly values or godly principles.

Those who are unrepentant in their sin are now becoming the majority while it seems those in Christ have become silenced by the media and by the majority. Many Christians today don’t want to offend those in their sin, so they pacify the behaviors of others rather than speaking the truth of God to those who are dying in their sin. In effect, the body of Christ has become weakened because many have laid down their arms and shrank back from the stance of declaring God’s truth.

The Apostle Paul was unashamed of the Gospel and he like many other Disciples during his time were killed for what they stood for. The fact is, the cost that Jesus Christ paid was greater than any persecution (whether it be verbal or physical) that we could endure. If we are ashamed of the Gospel, then it says little to nothing about the power of the Cross of Jesus Christ. It also says that we as believers don’t care about our fellow humans who are destined for Hell.

If we as true believers fail in our assignment to reach out to anyone who is in their sin, then we are not worthy of the calling that Jesus has given to us. To those of you who are not in Christ, you are the very one’s that Jesus died for. Christ died for all, but He died and rose again so that you and I could be redeemed from our sin. Accept His sacrifice and repent of your sins. The Good News is the story of redemption from destruction and a separation from God. That is the Gospel that must be given to all of humanity. We must share it unashamedly for Jesus Christ.

ID-10023038When you look at an open door what comes to your mind? Most would probably think of an open door as a way out. An open door can signify the exit from one place to another. However, if you think about an open door, it also signifies an entrance into another room or an establishment. Where there is an open door it means that there is a probability that someone may enter through the doorway. The individual who enters may or may not have permission, however, the open door provides an opportunity for all to enter uninhibited.

It is often that an open door can pose a security risk to a residence or an establishment. As long as the building in question does not have security on the premises then the open door leaves everyone within the building and any associated property in a vulnerable state. The key to eliminating theft of personal or public property or even potential injury is to close the door to the outside. It is then appropriate to lock the door to ensure that no one without appropriate access can enter. Doing so secures the establishment and all who reside within it.

If you were to turn on your local, national or international news channel, you may ask yourself the question, ‘What in the world is going on?’ Every day there are a myriad of examples that point to the door that has been left open to the abundance sin. Various nations within our world have essentially approved of a Godless style of living. World leaders and their governments are not seeking God’s will as it relates to domestic or foreign policy. Rather they are seeking human means to accomplish agendas that are not possible without divine intervention.

In the book of Isaiah chapter 9, we see one of the many moments in which Israel is given a prophetic judgment. Isaiah was one of many prophets who spoke to Israel concerning sin and the eventual judgment that God would bring. Here is what Isaiah says to the people of Israel:

Verses 8-10:

(NLT) “The Lord has spoken out against Jacob; his judgment has fallen upon Israel. And the people of Israel and Samaria, who spoke with such pride and arrogance, will soon know it. They said, “We will replace the broken bricks of our ruins with finished stone, and replant the felled sycamore-fig trees with cedars.”

Verses 11-13:

(NLT) “But the Lord will bring Rezin’s enemies against Israel and stir up all their foes. The Syrians from the east and the Philistines from the west will bare their fangs and devour Israel. But even then the Lord’s anger will not be satisfied. His fist is still poised to strike. For after all this punishment, the people will still not repent. They will not seek the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.”

The first thing to notice in verses 9 and 10 is that the people of Israel were showing pride or arrogance. In verse 10 the people of Israel are self-confident about rebuilding their surroundings and replanting what they had previously. Essentially, they were busy doing what they desired in their own human strength rather than submitting themselves to God. That is the same disposition much of humanity has today.

Many within our world today have adopted the secular humanist mindset of doing everything without a supreme authority. The secular humanist does not believe in God nor will he/she acknowledge His existence because they believe in human willpower.  As a result of such arrogance, those who believe in their own intellect and ability are utterly rejected and destroyed by God.

Going back to the scripture, notice what occurs in verses 11-13. Isaiah prophesies that Israel’s enemies will return to destroy them for their arrogance and rejection toward God. Verse 13 says that the people of Israel would not repent nor would they seek the Lord. Essentially they did what many have and continue to do today and that is that they have chosen not to repent of their sins.

Verses 14-17:

(NLT) “Therefore, in a single day the Lord will destroy both the head and the tail, the noble palm branch, and the lowly reed. The leaders of Israel are the head, and the lying prophets are the tail. For the leaders of the people have misled them. They have led them down the path of destruction. That is why the Lord takes no pleasure in the young men and shows no mercy even to the widows and orphans. For they are all wicked hypocrites, and they all speak foolishness.”

Notice that in verse 16 Isaiah says that the leaders of Israel have misled the population toward destruction. Even in verse 17, Isaiah says that the Lord was displeased with the young men of Israel because of their wickedness and foolish speaking. Verses 19-20 will help us to extract the principles concerning what happens when a nation is Godless.

(NLT) “The land will be blackened by the fury of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. The people will be fuel for the fire, and no one will spare even his own brother. They will attack their neighbor on the right but will still be hungry. They will devour their neighbor on the left but will not be satisfied. In the end, they will even eat their own children.”

Based on all of these verses from Isaiah chapter 9 here are a couple of things that occur when a nation is Godless:

1. Self-destruction – Verses 19-20 point to the very things that would occur to the nation of Israel at that time.  It was because of their sinfulness and arrogance that Israel would essentially commit mass genocide.  That is what is occurring today. Television anchors, news analysts, and even the common viewer seem to be in a quandary as it relates to how it is that so much unrest and violence could erupt worldwide.  The answer is in humanity’s Godlessness.

For example, recently in America there has been a massive spark in criminal activity. Various cities have seen an increase in crime which includes a massive uptick in gun violence. Why is America witnessing so much violence? The answer is in the fact that America as a whole has chosen to forgo godly principles while instead embracing the concept of secular humanism. Our global population is paying the price for an outright rejection of God’s decrees. Basically, many nations are suffering from self-destruction because of a refusal to submit unto God. Isaiah says in verse 20 “In the end they will even eat their own children.” How often do we see such a massive amount of genocide among humanity? It has become the norm in our world.

2. Corrupt leadership – The passage of Isaiah chapter 9 also points to what occurs when sinfulness and pride becomes the culture within a nation. Verse 16 mentions that the leadership in Israel had misled the people. Today we see what happens when global leaders are corrupt in their very nature. Many of them have sold out to their national currency for the sake of political power and fame.  As a result, the people who they rule over end up in a place of hurt and poverty.

A leader who is corrupt and lacks the fear of God is a leader who leads his/her nation to destruction.  This in turn will cause an instability in each country’s population which means that more tensions between domestic governments and civilians will take place. The result of any nation that denies God’s existence or His principles will be that of economic and social chaos. Day by day we can see our world unraveling before our eyes because of those who are in authority and their unwillingness to submit unto a Holy God.

The bottom line is that a nation that embraces sin is a nation that leaves the door open to demonic spirits to have control. Why is it that mass shootings and terrorist attacks are always blamed on ‘mental health issues?’ The issue is much deeper than what the media tells you. There are evil spirits that satan uses to capture the heart and mind of any person who is open to rejecting God’s will.

All of the violence and confusion that we see is a direct result of a world that has balked at God’s order. While there are still Christians who will refuse to follow after what this society has set in place, the majority of those in sin are making a decision that is proving to be destructive. What is the answer to all of the chaos?

The only answer is Jesus Christ. If you don’t know Jesus then you won’t be able to traverse through these dangerous times.  While the End Times are here and there are many signs of Christ’s coming, Jesus is still the answer for a broken world. Accept Christ in the confession of your sins and believe in your heart that He is Lord. When you do so your eyes will be illuminated to the very sin and depravity of a wicked world. Your eyes will also be opened to see the glory of God Almighty.
