The Burdens that You Carry – Cast Them Upon Jesus Christ

ID-100210611If you have ever been inside of a loading dock, you would have noticed that much of your surroundings consists of large boxes or containers.  In most loading docks, shipments are either brought to or will be shipped from the location of the dock. However, because of the sheer size and bulk of shipments that are too heavy for a human to carry, it then requires heavy equipment to lift and transport from one area to the next. Such machinery that would be appropriate would be that of a forklift.

A forklift is a vehicle that has the ability to lift a considerable amount of weight. It is designed to carry massive amounts of weight, and can transport items within a short distance. They are useful as it relates to eliminating an individual or multiple individuals from attempting to lift a weight that is too heavy. In essence, this vehicle removes the burden from a human being by lifting the item that would be impossible for one to carry on his or her own.

How often have you found yourself attempting to carry an emotional or even a burden of life that was too much handle? Life brings with it various moments of joy, discovery, and opportunities for maturity.  However, with life there are moments that can be tragic and frustrating. All of us have become weary in our mindset and in our own outlooks of life.  However, there is one who can and will carry your burdens and that is Jesus Christ.

In the book of Matthew 11, we see that Jesus is preaching and teaching in various cities.  In the earlier part of this chapter (verses 1-6) the Disciples of John the Baptist meet with Jesus to find out if Jesus was indeed the Messiah who was prophesied to come. He sends them back to John the Baptist who is in prison, and Jesus then turns His attention to the crowds in the cities that He traveled to.

In verses 7-19,  Jesus is seen challenging the crowd on their expectations of John the Baptist.  It is clear in the scripture that their expectation of John the Baptist was false, to the point where the people were unwilling to hear what John had to proclaim. Basically, Jesus equates their mentality to that of being blasphemous because they had rejected the truth that God was speaking through John the Baptist.

As a result, Jesus judges the cities that He visits harshly for their sinfulness and unrepentance in verses 20-24 of Matthew chapter 11.  However, the verse to focus on for the purposes of this post is that of verse 28 which says:

(NLT) “Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.”

In the verses before that statement, Jesus is praying a prayer of thanksgiving in verses 25-27:

(NLT) “At that time Jesus prayed this prayer: “O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, thank you for hiding these things from those who think themselves wise and clever, and for revealing them to the childlike. Yes, Father, it pleased you to do it this way! “My Father has entrusted everything to me. No one truly knows the Son except the Father, and no one truly knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.”

It is important to note that what Jesus is saying in His prayer is that there are two types of individuals in question.  Those who think of themselves as wise in their own eyes. These were the individuals who rejected the truth of God that was given through John the Baptist.  The second group of individuals were those who were ‘childlike’ as Jesus said which meant that they were willing to believe with a childlike faith, meaning that they were open to trusting in God.

The overall point to be gained from this part of the passage is that Jesus is essentially saying that He is the one who provides an illumination from the darkness of sin. When He goes on to say in verse 28 that all who are weary can lay their burdens upon Him, He is talking about laying down the burdens of sin before Him.

When we are in our sin and have not accepted Christ as our Lord & Savior, we are operating out of pride which means that we are carrying our own burdens. The weight of sin is a heavy burden to carry. That is why we have an advocate in Jesus Christ who died and rose again so that the burden of sin could be carried by Him.  However, the burden of sin is not the only burden that Christ can carry.

You may be downtrodden because of an emotional burden, or even suffering from physical pain. The great thing about God is that He offers an opportunity for all of us to relinquish our burdens onto Him. 1 Peter 5:7 says, (NLT) “Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.” Like the forklift was built to lift heavy objects, the persons of God and Jesus Christ are available to lift your burden as you traverse through life.

It is the individual who is proud who rejects assistance when they are in need of someone to lift a heavy weight.  The danger in trying to lift the weight yourself is that you may suffer from an injury in the process.  There are some things that we as humans were not meant to carry on our own. God desires to not only protect each person who trusts in Him, but He wants to carry your burdens.  As the Apostle Peter says, “He cares for you.” 

The offering of life and life abundantly has been given to you and I as a gift. Jesus Christ bled and died so that your sin could be erased and no longer brought up again to bring shame.  Instead, God desires that you release your burdens onto Him so that you can be free from the weight.  Whether your burden is a particular sin, or it is an emotional scar, or maybe you are suffering from physical pain.  Whatever burden you are carrying, you have the Heavenly Father to lift the weight that you carry.

If you don’t know Jesus in the pardon of your sins, you have an opportunity to be forgiven and receive redemption through Christ. As the scripture says, in Matthew Chapter 11, verse 28, He will give you rest.  Are you weary and in need of rest? Surrender your life to Christ, and allow Him to lead you to a place of rejuvenation and peace.

The Good News – What Exactly is it?

Everyone likes to hear good news because it signifies that something pleasant has occurred.  Good news could be that you will receive a raise or a promotion on your job.  It may mean that you received a positive diagnosis from your doctor after getting a negative report.  Good news essentially means that a person’s fortune or current status in life has improved from a previous status. It is the positivity of any news story that provides joy, hope, and an elevated outlook towards the future.

It is the same type of hope and joy that can be found when the Gospel of Jesus Christ is examined.  What does the term, ‘Gospel’ mean and how does it translate into ‘The Good News?’ In the book of Mark Chapter 16, the resurrection of Jesus Christ is recorded. In this chapter, there is an account of Mary Magdalene, Mary the Mother of James, and Salome. The three women purchase burial spices in order to anoint the body of Jesus in the tomb. According to verses 3-4, they find that the stone which had been in front of Jesus’ tomb had been rolled away.

In verses 5-6, they encounter an angel of the Lord. They are told by the angel that Jesus is not dead but alive.  They were then given the instructions to go to Peter and the rest of the Disciples to deliver the news. However, because they were too frightened, they did not deliver the instructions right away as they had been told. The next day, Mary Magdalene is the first to see Jesus. Mark 16: 9-11 says the following:

(NLT) “After Jesus rose from the dead early on Sunday morning, the first person who saw him was Mary Magdalene, the woman from whom he had cast out seven demons. She went to the disciples, who were grieving and weeping, and told them what had happened. But when she told them that Jesus was alive and she had seen him, they didn’t believe her.”

Notice that the initial reaction of the Disciples was that they did not believe the news that was given. However, Jesus scolds the Disciples and gives them instructions in verses 14-15:

(NLT) “Still later he appeared to the eleven disciples as they were eating together. He rebuked them for their stubborn unbelief because they refused to believe those who had seen him after he had been raised from the dead. And then he told them, “Go into all the world and preach the Good News to everyone.” 

This particular translation uses the phrase, ‘Good News’, however, other translations use the term, ‘Gospel’.  Essentially, the term ‘Gospel’ means, ‘Good News’. The word ‘euangelion’ is Greek for the word, ‘Gospel’.  The Gospel of Jesus Christ is considered the ‘Good News’.  However, why does Jesus use that phrase, and why does He instruct the Disciples to go into all of the world to preach this ‘Good News’?

If you look at the crucifixion of Jesus Christ in its essence, it was an occurrence in human history that forever changed the dynamic of humanity’s initial destiny which was that of destruction. Jesus Christ’s sacrifice was the very act that repaired the chasm that existed between God and humanity. John 3:16 which is one of the most quoted Bible verses, simply states that it was the act of God’s love that gave humanity an opportunity to be redeemed through Jesus Christ. ‘The Good News’ is that Jesus Christ came to die for the sins of the world so that you and I could be redeemed and set free from our sin.

However, the Gospel of Jesus Christ isn’t simply a New Testament occurrence. ‘The Good News’ is actually for both the Old and New Testament because the Gospel goes as far back to the book of Genesis.  The reason why sin entered into the Earth originally was due to Adam & Eve’s disobedience.  Thus, the generation of every person after Adam & Eve, inherited the sinful nature that exists within the world today. Based on that fact, humanity was destined for destruction because of the original condition of being in sin. That is obviously the bad news.

It is important to note that even in the Old Testament of the Bible, there were prophecies of Jesus Christ coming to save humanity from its sinful condition. For example, the Prophet Isaiah prophesied of the 1st coming of Christ:

Isaiah 9:6

(NLT) “For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

The above scripture is a direct prophecy of the 1st coming of Jesus Christ. Basically, the Gospel of Jesus Christ isn’t limited to the New Testament of the Bible, but it encompasses the entirety of God’s Word.  It was always in God’s plan to redeem humanity through Jesus Christ, even before He came to the Earth to die and rise again. So, the point is that the Gospel of Jesus Christ is indeed good news for all of humanity. The reason why it is called ‘The Good News’ is because, we as humans now have a way of avoiding destruction.

In our sinful state, we are unable to have fellowship or communion with God. It is because of our sin, that we are separated from truly knowing God in an authentic relationship.  However, when Jesus Christ came to die, the power that sin had over humanity was broken.  Christ was the advocate who took the punishment and death that was ours to pay. It was because of Christ’s willingness to become sin for us, that you and I now have an opportunity to be cleansed of our sin through His precious blood.

The Gospel of Jesus Christ is indeed ‘The Good News’ for the entire world. Nowhere else in human history will there ever be a greater love than God’s love, and a greater story of redemption. By birth, you and I were born into sin and it is because of that reality that we deserve destruction.  However, the destruction that is pending can be cancelled upon the acceptance of Jesus Christ as your Lord & Savior.

Unfortunately, there are many Pastors and even Christians who have not adequately expressed or shown the world what the Gospel of Jesus Christ is. There are those who have either watered down the Gospel or have not taken the time to focus on it which, in essence, rejects Christ’s original instruction. Jesus’ original instruction to the Disciples was to preach the Gospel unto all of the nations.  That should be the goal of every Christian because ‘The Good News’ is meant to be spread unto all of humanity.  Not spreading this ‘Good News’ only means that many will be unaware of the reality of Hell and destruction.  Also, by not adhering to Jesus’ instructions, many are missing out on knowing God in an authentic relationship for themselves.

Do you know Jesus as your Lord & Savior?  If you have not accepted Christ’s sacrifice, you have an opportunity.  The bad news is that you are destined for Hell and eternal separation from God’s presence if you do not accept Christ’s sacrifice.  However, the good news is, that Jesus Christ is your way out of such a horrid destiny.  The price has already been paid.  Reach out to Jesus and confess before Him that you are a sinner in need of His saving grace. When you do that, you will be saved, and you will be able to declare the Gospel to another lost soul. This in turn perpetuates the opportunity toward those who will be forever changed because of Jesus Christ.

Spiritual Currency – Are You Living in Destitution or in Wealth?

ID-100142636Every nation on Earth has a form of currency. Whether it be electronic, paper or coin currency, each nation is marked by its individual currency which is used in exchange for goods. However, as our world is run with the idea that currency equates to wealth and sustenance, there is a responsibility that we all have when using our currency. Money management has been a concept that has been encouraged over the years. Various tips on how to invest and spend one’s money have proliferated to the degree of national figures such as Suze Orman coming to the forefront. However, even with all of the currencies in our world there is a slight difference between them and that is their comparative value with other currencies.

Basically, if you live in the United States and you wanted to use American currency in Russia, you wouldn’t be able to.  The reason is because the currency is virtually worthless in Russia, and would need to be exchanged at the Russian rate through a currency exchange.  This would allow any American to go to Russia to purchase goods, but only with what is known as the Russian Ruble.

When you look at this concept spiritually, there are two types of currencies that we are given to use.  There is the currency of this world which is to operate in our sinful nature. Or, there is the currency of Heaven which is to operate by following Jesus Christ. 1 Peter Chapter 2, begins with the very essence of admonishing those who are Christians to live in holiness and to forsake the ways of sinfulness.

The words, “Royal Priesthood”, “Holy”, and “Holy Priesthood” are used in various translations of this passage.  However, the point is that the Apostle Peter wanted to distinguish between those who are of the world, and those who have accepted Christ.

1 Peter 2: 1-3 says:

(ESV) “So put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander. Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation— if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good.”

Verses 4-5:

“As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.”

In this passage, there is also the mention of the “Living Stone”. The “Living Stone” is that of Jesus Christ.  When this scripture mentions “a living stone rejected by men” it means that Jesus was rejected by the world, but He was also chosen by God as precious or valuable.  Anyone who chooses Jesus Christ will also be like Christ in the sense that God has chosen those who follow Him to be Holy and set apart from the world. Verse 6 says that there is honor in those who believe in Jesus, and they will not be put to shame.

However, in verses 7-9, the term, “stumbling block” or “rock of offense” is used to denote that those who do not believe will stumble in disobedience. Basically, those who reject Christ will find themselves at odds with God and will be offended which will result in sinful actions as a form of rebellion. Verse 9, however, affirms those who choose Christ as being a “Royal Priesthood” and a “Holy Nation.” Even in verse 11, the Apostle Peter implies that Christians are “exiles” or as other translations use the words, “alien” or “not of this world”.  Peter encourages Christians to abstain from sin and to walk in the true calling of God’s righteousness.

The point to be made concerning the concept of spiritual currency is that there are two options.  The first option is given clearly in 1 Peter Chapter 2 which is to be apart of the Royal Priesthood by accepting Christ’s sacrifice.  In this scripture, Peter is speaking to Christians who have already made that choice. The fact is that we all have a choice to either choose Christ or to serve our fleshly desires.

If you decide to choose Jesus Christ and live for God, you are operating out of a currency of spiritual wealth. What does this mean? This means that you are now able to live a life of abundance which isn’t just isolated to money, although monetary wealth isn’t discouraged. Spiritual wealth means peace within your mind, a heart that is full of joy, and a soul that is destined for everlasting life when your time on Earth is done. You are chosen to do God’s will and to be set apart from the rest of the world.

This also means, that if you attempt to use this spiritual currency in this worldly system, that you will find yourself rejected by the world. Just like the example of using one nation’s currency in another, it won’t work unless you exchange the different values.  This is why, Peter uses the term, “Rock of offense.”  To the sinner who is not open to receiving Christ, God’s ways and those who follow God are seen as foolish.  Thus, those who follow God are spurned due to the reaction to the beckoning that comes from a loving God.

However, on the flip side there is an alternative currency and that is the currency of this world.  This is not in the monetary sense because we all use a form of currency to survive.  This currency is based out of one’s refusal to live in obedience unto God. Instead, it is a currency that openly accepts satan and the fleshly desires that come from our sinful nature.

As a result of living in unrepentant sin, the price is that of spiritual bankruptcy which means that life begins to decay. Why is it that so many who live in their sin, are many of the most unhappy and unfulfilled individuals?  That is because, for one, our lives were meant to be connected to God through Jesus Christ. Secondly, sin is a disease which drain the very life out of every human. The toll that comes from a sin filled life is one of decadence and poverty.

The world around us sounds a clarion of living for happiness, doing as you please, and doing “what feels good.” However, if you live by this spiritual currency there are negative consequences.  Every society that has removed or forcibly squelched the message of God has been a society that never experienced positive net gains that come from living in godly prosperity.

The result of any nation that lives by satan’s currency is one that is in abject poverty both physically and spiritually.  Confusion and chaos begin to become the norm, because of a staunch opposition to God’s precepts.  Just look at America for example – America is a country that has become bankrupt in the literal and spiritual sense.  It may be a country that claims to be the “wealthiest nation on Earth” however, even with what appears to be monetary stability it is anything but wealthy.  Confusion and various tragedies reign, because of humanity’s refusal to accept a Holy God through Jesus’ sacrifice.

Which currency are you using?  Are you living by the spiritual currency that the media feeds you daily? Or are you living by the spiritual currency that is tied to the King of Kings and Lord of Lords?  If you are spiritually bankrupt, there is a method of exchange that you have access to, and that is through Jesus Christ.  By accepting His sacrifice and turning from your sins, your destitution will turn into spiritual wealth.  Take the time today, and exchange your sins for a life lived in eternal security and spiritual richness.

Access Granted – What Happens When You Have a Relationship With God?

ID-10046524In the late 20th century and even into the 21st century, technology has encompassed the implementation of securing information and transactions. One of the main methods used as a part of secure technology is that of having a username and a password. When accessing data that is considered to be private, it is critical to authenticate a user’s information so that the data remains classified to the general public. If you have sensitive information, only you should have access to such information because your access is granted based on your username and your password. Anyone who does not have access to your account or user information will be denied.

When it comes to our spiritual well-being, God treats every individual in the same way. Basically, the way to access Heaven, eternal life, and divine security here on Earth is through Jesus Christ. When you and I make the decision to accept Jesus Christ as our Lord & personal Savior, we will then have access to everything that God desires for us. In Matthew Chapter 7 verses 21-23, Jesus gives us the disposition that God has and will have toward anyone who has not accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord & Savior:

(ESV) “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day, many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’”

When you look at this scripture, there are a few things that are clear that all of us should strongly consider:

1. It isn’t just about invoking the name of the Lord – Jesus clearly says in verse 21 that not everyone who calls out to Him, “Lord, Lord” will enter into the Kingdom Heaven. This means that just because the name of the Lord is invoked, doesn’t mean that God recognizes the individual who is calling out to Him. Take for instance the earlier example of entering a username and a password to access an account.  If you are trying to access someone else’s account, it won’t work without their username and password. So, as hard as you may try, you won’t have access without the correct information.

God treats humanity in the same way in that, the only way to God is through Jesus Christ.  Notice what else Jesus says in this scripture when he says, “but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.”  After you have accepted Christ as your Lord & Savior, there is more that should take place. Your words and your actions should line up with what you have professed. God isn’t just concerned with what you say, but He is concerned with your heart and the actions that are a result of your relationship with God. 

2. We are not saved by works – For quite some time, the idea that one can be saved through works alone has been accepted as a barometer for salvation.  However, Jesus says that on the day of judgment there will be many who will give God a list of their own examples of what they have done, which they think will be sufficient for entering into Heaven.  However, works that a person does is not what qualifies a person to enter into eternal rest with God. Ephesians 2:9 in the NLT version says, “Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.”

The above scripture clearly states that salvation is not contingent upon our works, because if it were then it would be used as a tool to boast in our own abilities. Also, if salvation were based on works and not grace, then the sacrifice of Jesus Christ would not have been necessary.

It is important to note that a person’s works and service unto God is a product of a changed heart through Jesus Christ. In Matthew 7:16, Jesus says that you will know the tree by the fruit it bears.  Basically, actions matter in the sense that it is a reflection of what is in a person’s heart.  For your actions to change, you must spend time in prayer, worship, and the reading of God’s Word.  By doing so on a daily basis, your heart begins to change because you are drenching yourself in the presence of God.

3. God does not recognize anyone who is not associated with Jesus Christ – It goes back to the example of using the correct username and password.  If a user has the correct access, then they will be granted permission to the information within the account. In Matthew 7:23, Jesus tells us what will happen if someone does not have a relationship with God through Christ: “And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’”  

Our recognition by God is based on His son Jesus Christ.  If you have not accepted Jesus as your Lord & Savior, then God will not recognize you as His own on your judgment day. God wants to know you for your allegiance and relationship with Him through Christ. There are many who do good works, but their heart has not been changed through the convicting power of the Holy Spirit. In order for you and I to be received by God, our lives must be intertwined with Jesus Christ in the remission of our sins.

So then, what happens when you have a relationship with God?

1. You have access to His blessings and protection – Once you have decided to accept Christ in the pardon of your sins, you have become a child of God.  Like a daughter or a son has access to the inheritance of their father, you will have an inheritance that God will provide to you.  This even involves being protected from the snares of the enemy. Protection comes from being on the side of the one who the Psalmist David often references in the context of being His protector.  The one who protects and delivers is the almighty God.

2. The life you live becomes a testament of God’s love for humanity – If you are actively pursuing God and spending time developing your relationship with Him, then your life will transform before the eyes of the world. One of the great things about salvation is that it isn’t just limited to you, but it is for the entire world. The salvation that God offers can be portrayed in your life by how you live and what you say.

3. God’s purpose for your life is revealed to you – Every life on Earth has a specific purpose for being.  However, there are many who never discover what they were made to do or the impact that they can have in God’s Kingdom. By having a relationship with God, your purpose for the sake of God’s Kingdom is not only revealed, but it is completed as you live daily.

Do you have access to God through Jesus Christ? There are so many who have tried to access God through other means. Some have tried it by religiously attending church services.  Others have tried it by serving in various ministries in order to perform “good works.” Then there are even those who believe that you can be saved and spared from Hell just by being a “good person.” The mistake in all of these methods is that they do not include an adherence to God, nor do they exhibit one’s need to be saved from their sin.

Jesus Christ gave His life for you so that you could have everlasting life. However, the gift of salvation is freely given for you to accept voluntarily. You cannot receive salvation by your own good works or by living morally.  The only guidelines and way of living that apply to eternal salvation are the precepts that God has put into place. Accept Christ, and you will be granted access to a changed heart, a changed mind, and a changed life.

The Distortion and Brokenness that is a Result of Sin

broken-hand-mirrorA mirror is designed to portray the reflection of an object or a person that is within view. Any form of glass that is not modified or distorted in any way will produce a complete reflection. This is of course if there is ample lighting which is refracted from the surface to create an exact image within the mirror. However, what if a mirror is shattered or if the image becomes foggy due to condensation in the atmosphere? It will mean that the original image of the object or person becomes distorted upon viewing. Basically, an external problem (i.e. mirror accidentally shattering) can cause a distortion of the view.

Spiritually speaking, the same concept can be applied to all of our lives as it relates to distortion and brokenness.  In Genesis Chapter 1, we can see the account of God creating various species of animal, and forming the elements of the Earth that we see today. Throughout a period of 6 days, God created the skies, the oceans, the stars, and all living creatures which would inhabit the Earth.  In addition to the various creations, humanity was a part of God’s plan. The first part of Genesis 1:26 says,

(ESV) “Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.” 

Verse 27 also says, (ESV) “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.”

From the very beginning, humanity was created and formed to be in the image of the almighty God. It is also important to notice that the word “us” is used because it denotes the existence of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.  All were present from the beginning of time. So, this scripture affirms the fact that you and I were created in the image of God. We were fashioned to express and portray the image of holiness, righteousness, and the very essence of who God is. However, the original image became distorted because of sin.

The actual account of Adam & Eve deciding to sin took place in Genesis 3. Most who know this scriptural reference, know that Adam & Eve ate from the tree of the Knowledge of Good & Evil (Genesis 3: 1-7) after God had given them instructions not to.  In their disobedience, they not only suffered the consequences of being evicted from the Garden of Eden (verses 23-24), but the image of God in humanity became distorted. Notice what God says to Adam in verse 9:

(ESV) “But the Lord God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?”

In verse 8, Adam & Eve hid from God’s presence because they were ashamed and obviously guilty of their disobedience.  However, when God asked the question of Adam “Where are you?” it was in the context of God no longer recognizing His own image. It wasn’t that God did not know where Adam was in the physical sense, but because of the sin committed, the very image of God’s likeness was distorted and no longer recognizable.

The fact is that ever since Adam & Eve’s disobedience at the dawn of creation, humanity has suffered and portrayed the image of distortion. When you look at a mirror that has been shattered, the image of an object or a person is no longer recognizable. That is what took place when Adam & Eve rebelled. Even if we fast forward into today’s time, there are so many examples of distortion and broken images.

Satan was able to deceive Eve into believing the lie that she would not die if she ate of the fruit of the tree that God forbade. However, the lie was only partial because Adam & Eve indeed died, but it was a spiritual death and not physical.  Our enemy satan is the master of deception but also distortion. He distorts the truth by changing it into various alternatives, which leads to the art of deception.

For example, over the past two months, the issue of homosexuality and the “transgender” lifestyle has surfaced more so than ever. Not only is it legal in the United States and 20 other countries for homosexuals to marry, but such a lifestyle has now become embraced.  Even those who are publicly stating their “transformation” from the gender they were born as to identifying as another has become acceptable by many in society today. Bruce Jenner became the shining example of what distortion truly looks like.

Jenner became the champion for those who were and are “transgender” because he supposedly represents someone who spoke out with the objective to be embraced for his lifestyle. However, even in doing so, Jenner like others are showing what a life looks like when it is distorted. Many (even Christians) are afraid to speak out against such sins, but the damage that is caused to the individual and to our society becomes more evident as time goes forward.

Both homosexuality and identifying as a different gender are examples of distortion because it was never God’s original design.  When you look back at Genesis 1:27, it says that “male and female he created them.” That is because from the very beginning, God had a plan in place and it was designed as He created it to be. However, when sin was introduced into the world, the brokenness and distortion was a product of the original sin.

Satan desires to distort and destroy anything that God creates. Going back to the issue of homosexuality and being “transgender”, these are two cases of massive distortion.  The enemy knows that if he can get the majority to buy into such deception, then it will corrupt future generations. What occurs when you have two individuals of the same-sex who adopt and raise children? You end up with a broken view of the original family structure. Basically, the child or children involved, no longer have the balance of a mother and a father. There are certain traits that will be missing when there is a lack of balance. Satan knows this, which is why he promotes such a deviation from God’s original plan.

As a result, you have a degradation of the original family structure, which creates confusion and identity issues. Even as it relates to those who want to “change their gender“, there is a confusion that comes with it. Satan knows that when people choose to rebel against God and sin becomes acceptable, negative consequences are the result. When you look at Adam & Eve, they lost their original inheritance because of their rebellion.

Many today are losing their inheritance which is that of life everlasting and joy in abundance. The majority within our global society are now redefining various aspects of life which only God can define, which means that in humanity’s rebellion, God is not pleased.  As a result, God leaves every nation that rejects His ruling to the decadence and societal devolution which causes hardship and turmoil.

However, with all of that being the reality, there is great news.  Jesus Christ is the remedy and the only one who can mend the brokenness and distortion that sin causes. Although Adam & Eve’s sin caused the original distortion, Jesus Christ came so that you and I could live a life free from sin.  The hysteria that sin causes can be altered when you and I come to Jesus Christ. Do you know Jesus as your Lord & Savior?

If not, then the original image of God cannot be made manifest as long as you are in rebellion against God.  Jesus Christ bled and died for you so that the image of God could be reclaimed in your life. God wishes that every human come to the knowledge and experience of His great love. However, the choice is up to you to choose Christ. Allow God to mend the brokenness and straighten the distortion that is within your life.  Only Jesus Christ can start the process to a road of recovery.  Take an opportunity and accept the gift of eternal life.

The Distractions of Life – How Satan Diverts Your Attention

If you have traveled through any highway or any major roadway, you might have noticed roadside advertisements. Such advertisements are usually called, “billboards.” A billboard is a large sign that is designed to get the driver’s attention for the specific purpose of relaying a message. The message may be to promote a restaurant or a hotel, or perhaps to send a message that invokes thought or encouragement. Regardless of what the message may be, a billboard holds the key purpose of grabbing your attention. In many cases, a billboard may cause the driver to consider the attraction to the point that they end their travel at that very moment. This in turn means that the driver found something of worth or was compelled to put their journey on hold to see what is so attractive about the promotion.

In life, there are a multitude of distractions that you and I face every day. Satan who is the enemy of our soul has cunningly incorporated various mechanisms to distract us from coming into a relationship with God through Jesus Christ. There are many who are living in sin because they have voluntarily given up the opportunity to be free from the power that sin holds over humanity. In the book of Proverbs 4:25-27, the following scripture is recorded:

(ESV) “Let your eyes look directly forward, and your gaze be straight before you. Ponder the path of your feet; then all your ways will be sure. Do not swerve to the right or to the left; turn your foot away from evil.”

In this chapter of Proverbs, the topic is that of a Father’s instructions to his sons. Throughout this chapter, there are various words of encouragement and admonishment to be wise, and to get wisdom. In verse 14 of this chapter, there is a mention of deviating from the path of evil.

(ESV) “Do not enter the path of the wicked, and do not walk in the way of the evil. Avoid it; do not go on it; turn away from it and pass on.”

It is important to note that the instructions given by the writer focus on adhering to a life that is aligned within a path of righteousness instead of evil. However, the focal verses which are verses 25-27, point to maintaining a life that is not distracted. The writer says, “Let your eyes look directly forward, and your gaze be straight before you.” What does this writer mean when he says this?

To look directly forward is to look ahead without taking notice of your surroundings. In this context, it means that one is staunchly focused on what is in front of them rather than any distractions that could be within the vicinity. In today’s environment, it is extremely important to be alert but to also remain focused. This is especially true as it relates to our spiritual development. The writer is suggesting that it is better to keep your eyes focused ahead of you, rather than on what is around you.

The reason is because if your attention is diverted elsewhere and not on the things of the Lord, then you will fall prey to the deceptive attacks of satan. In Psalm 141 the psalmist David cries out to the Lord with the intent to seek Him for His help. In verse 8 David says, “But my eyes are toward you, O God, my Lord; in you I seek refuge; leave me not defenseless!” The posture that we are all to have is one of an undivided attention unto God.

Going back to Proverbs 4, verse 26 says, “Ponder the path of your feet; then all your ways will be sure.” This means that we should be mindful of the path that we take so that we are walking in steps that are ordered and set by God. Often times, there are many distractions which are presented to us, which cause us to veer off of the path that God has designed for us.

Daily, the media continues to promote poison and deceptive words which infiltrate our minds and our hearts. This in turn creates a system of falsehoods which become accepted as the truth, despite satan delivering “the truth” disguised as a multitude of lies. John 8:44 calls satan the “Father of lies.” It is satan’s goal to distract and to deceive by using any means that he can. He understands that if he is successful in distracting those who are not built up in Christ, then he will have the masses walking in blindness towards destruction.

However, the writer in Proverbs 4 encourages us to be thoughtful about our path and where we are headed. Not being prudent about your destination is sure to bring you to an end that God never intended. The final verse in this chapter says, “Do not swerve to the right or to the left; turn your foot away from evil.” This goes back to the original point which is to stay focused in your attention and to abstain from the evil path.

So, how does Satan divert our attention and what can you do to stay focused? Here are a few considerations concerning this matter:

1. Satan uses what is attractive to us – The thing about sin is that it is attractive and it appeals to our flesh. It is because we are human beings, we are tempted daily to indulge in our sinful nature. So, satan challenges us daily with what our flesh desires because he knows that if we are operating in carnality, then we will give in.

2. Satan uses the majority to influence – Once you have a majority of individuals that have given into temptation, it is much easier to go in the direction of the masses. The path that is separate or contrary to the norm is one that is isolated. Thus, satan will often use others to ostracize and break you down into submission so that you conform to the ways of this world.

However, even in the midst of satan’s tactics, here is what you can do to avoid his distractions:

1. Live a life that is surrendered unto Christ – The very first step for anyone is to live in obedience unto Jesus Christ. This means, accepting Jesus Christ as your personal savior. If you have not given your heart to Jesus, you have an opportunity to do so. By taking this first step, you are in a position of safety and your spirit is now open to the things of God.

2. Spend time in prayer and in God’s Word – Arming yourself against the distractions of this world requires that you have a life that is rooted and grounded in God’s word and that you are praying daily. Seeking God’s presence will increase your spiritual awareness so you can see what distractions exist through God’s eyes. Having God’s word hidden in your heart, gives you His truth which will always supersede the lies that satan produces.

3. Know your enemy – You must understand how satan operates. He desires to destroy humanity and to disrupt the very idea of anyone having a relationship with God through Christ. If you don’t know what the enemy uses as bait, then you must familiarize yourself with his strategy. This is so you can take measures to be built up in your relationship with God.

The overall message from Proverbs chapter 4 is to walk in the way that God has for us. You can only do that when you are in a relationship with Jesus Christ. Doing anything in your own will-power is certain to end in defeat. However, God wants to guide you on a path that is consistent with His design, and one that leads to victory and not destruction. Seek the Lord while He may be found, and avoid the evil path that satan desires for you to take.

Maximizing the Time That You Have Before Its Too Late – Choosing Jesus Christ

ID-1002578If you have ever had a job interview or an appointment that was of importance, you would have taken the extra steps to make it to your destination on time. To be on time or early, is to prepare ahead of time so that you do not miss an important opportunity. So, this means that you will ensure that before the time of your appointment, you would have planned ahead in the event of an un-forseen disaster.  For example, en route to your destination there might be a car accident impeding your progress. However, because you were well prepared, you were able to move beyond the accident and make it to your appointment on time.

However, what if you did not prepare before your appointment? What if you took it for granted that you would make it to your meeting on time and decided not to leave your home with a sense of urgency? The chances are, you would likely be tardy to your appointment, which would have a set of negative ramifications. Most know that if you were to show up to a job interview late, you would not be considered for the position. The reason is because your lateness disqualifies you in addition to it being a signifier to the employer that you may repeat the pattern if hired.

Spiritually speaking, there is an element of “waiting too late” to make a decision concerning your eternity.  In the scripture of Matthew 25: 1-13, Jesus is teaching by using a parable.  In this passage, He illustrates the “Parable of the Ten Virgins.” There is much that both Christians and non-Christians can learn from this parable. Starting with the first few verses, Jesus says the following:

Verses 1-5:

(ESV) “Then the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. For when the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them, but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps. As the bridegroom was delayed, they all became drowsy and slept.”

So, here you have 10 virgins in which 5 were wise, and 5 were unwise. Notice that verse 5 says, “As the bridegroom was delayed, they all became drowsy and slept.”  This is of importance because it suggests that we are all given time by God to prepare for eternity. So, verse 5 says that the bridegroom was delayed, which meant that there was time for preparation.  However, in the earlier verses, 5 virgins were unprepared and did not fill their lamps with oil. 

Verses 6-9:

(ESV) “But at midnight there was a cry, ‘Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.’ Then all those virgins rose and trimmed their lamps. And the foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’  But the wise answered, saying, ‘Since there will not be enough for us and for you, go rather to the dealers and buy for yourselves.'”

In verse 6, we see that the bridegroom finally appears at the appointed time. The wise virgins were the individuals who were prepared for the coming of the bridegroom. However, the foolish virgins were unprepared, and they attempted to get oil from the other 5 virgins.  However, they were unsuccessful in their request, and they are told to get oil elsewhere.

Verses 10-13:

(ESV) “And while they were going to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast, and the door was shut. Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, ‘Lord, lord, open to us.’ But he answered, ‘Truly, I say to you, I do not know you.’ Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.”

The unwise virgins made a final attempt to purchase oil, but as they were purchasing the oil, the bridegroom arrived, and it was too late to gain entry to the wedding feast. As the end of verse 11 says, the virgins cried, “Lord, Lord, open to us.” but verse 12 says, “But he answered, ‘Truly, I say to you, I do not know you.’”

The lesson that we can all take from this parable is that we must be prepared for our eternity. Whether you are in Christ or not, there is an urgency that we all must have concerning where we end up after our physical life is done.  The passage of the 10 virgins is critical because it shows what can happen when you are prepared and unprepared.

For the virgins who were prepared, they were able to gain access to the wedding feast. However, for those who were not prepared, they were denied access and they were told the exact words that God gives in Matthew 7: 21-23.  This scripture is similar to Matthew 25, because the concept is that there will be those who will wait until it is too late to gain entry into Heaven, and will find that their tardiness will be met with denial.

Basically, in both Matthew 25 and Matthew 7, the reality for those who are unprepared is that they will not be received into the Kingdom of God.  Only those who have chosen Jesus Christ as their Lord & Savior on Earth will be granted everlasting life and will abide in God’s presence forever. Undoubtedly, there will be those who leave this Earth, and will have left without choosing Jesus Christ.

They will be the same individuals that will stand before God’s seat of judgment, making a plea with Him to avoid the fiery depths of Hell.  However, as verse 23 says in Matthew 7, God will say, “I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.” The point is that God does not recognize anyone who has not willfully given their lives over to Christ.  He only recognizes those who have accepted the gift of life which is Jesus Christ.

You and I, we have time because we are yet breathing.  However, there will come a day when our lives will end.  When your life is over, do you want to stand before God knowing that you have given your life to Jesus and that your eternity is secure?  Or will you stand before Him in judgment, hearing the words “I never knew you, depart from me.”? The great thing about God is that He gives everyone an opportunity.  Just like the 5 foolish virgins had the time to prepare, you have time to secure your eternity in Heaven with God.

This scripture and principle can also be applied to the coming of Jesus Christ. The truth is, that the return of Jesus Christ is imminent. No one knows exactly when He will return, but we can all be assured that He will.  Various signs are swirling around us daily, which points to the approaching return of Jesus Christ. So, just like the 5 wise virgins we must be ready for Christ’s return.

It would be unfortunate to live a life toiling away to reach status, self-satisfaction, and pleasure only to lose your soul at the end of it. All of us have something in common – we are each given 24 hours a day to live. The difference between all of our lives is that none of us knows when our time will end. Your time may come today, tomorrow, next week, or next year. However, regardless of when your time on Earth is over, you have a choice.

You can choose Jesus Christ in the pardon of your sins and be eternally secured. Or you can continue a path without God which is one that is destined for Hell and eternal separation from God. The choice is yours and yours alone. Even for those of us who are in Christ, we must ensure that we are living wisely, by discerning our own relationship with God. We must please God with everything we have so that we will be greeted with affirming words of how we lived from our Heavenly Father. All of us, must choose. Choose Jesus Christ before you lose the gift of time which is your God given opportunity.

Extreme Makeover – The Transforming Power of Jesus Christ

ID-100210186Have you ever watched a television show that showcased an “Extreme Makeover”? In such television shows, there are individuals who participate in the quest to enhance their physical features. The individual in question usually desires to change from the ordinary to the extraordinary. So, they seek professional help from makeup artists or those who have the acumen to change a person’s physical appearance. Whether it be incorporating makeup, trimming or styling hair, or even upgrading a wardrobe – the goal is to achieve the ultimate transformation.  Once the person has experienced a dramatic change, their self-esteem increases and they become a new person based on a renewed sense of confidence.

Spiritually, we are all in need of an “Extreme Makeover.” 2 Corinthians 5:17 says, (ESV) “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” This scripture means that if anyone is in Christ or has accepted His sacrifice in the remission of their sins, they are a new creation.  Why does the Apostle Paul use the phrase, “New Creation?” 

Since all of us are born into sin due to Adam & Eve’s disobedience, we automatically inherit the nature of sin.  So, in our sinful nature we are prone to follow after the ways of the flesh, rather than accepting the things of the Holy Spirit. When we live in sin, we are operating out of the “old nature” which is our sinful nature.  However, when we receive Christ, we are transformed into our “new nature”.  The new nature encompasses that of exhibiting the fruit of the Spirit. The fruit of the Spirit can be found in Galatians chapter 5, verses 22-23.

In Ephesians 4: 17-19 the Apostle Paul says the following:

(NKJV) “This I say, therefore, and testify in the Lord, that you should no longer walk as the rest of the Gentiles walk, in the futility of their mind, having their understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart; who, being past feeling, have given themselves over to lewdness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.”

In the first part of this passage, the Apostle Paul is speaking to fellow Christians. Paul makes a reference to the Gentiles (who were not in Christ) as being individuals who did not know God due to their ignorance.  Thus, because of the darkness within their hearts, they were unable to live in holiness which meant they practiced sinful behavior regularly.

However, here is the alternative that Paul gives to every Christian:

Verses 18-24:

(NKJV) “But you have not so learned Christ, if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus: that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.” 

Notice the words, “former conduct” which meant that those Paul was speaking to were once in their sin. Paul says that we are to put off the former conduct, which means to forsake the things of the flesh.  He also uses the words, “new man” which signifies the newness that comes with receiving Christ into our lives.  It is because of Jesus Christ that we are able to be made new and whole.

Those who reject God’s love and Christ’s sacrifice are unable to experience wholeness or complete peace.  That is because, apart from Christ, there isn’t any other way to have life and have it abundantly.  Addictions and various behaviors which are destructive are symptoms of a soul that is weakened without Jesus Christ. The fact is that all of us are worshipping someone or something.  That is because our hearts and souls were meant to be connected to God through Jesus Christ.  We were created to worship God and God alone.

There are scriptural accounts in which the very presence and encounter with Jesus healed the sick.  For example, the commonly recounted story of the woman with the issue of blood as recorded in Luke 8: 43-47.  In this passage, there is a woman who suffered from bleeding for 12 years. During her ordeal, she attempted various measures in order to be free from her condition, but nothing worked.  However, notice what the scripture says concerning this woman in verses 43-44:

(NKJV) “Now a woman, having a flow of blood for twelve years, who had spent all her livelihood on physicians and could not be healed by any, came from behind and touched the border of His garment. And immediately her flow of blood stopped.” 

The scripture says that her condition was immediately cured because she touched the hem of Jesus’ robe. It was the fact that this woman came into contact with Jesus that completely altered her condition.  Other accounts of physical healing can be used to signify the transformative power of Jesus Christ.  However, the overall point is that whenever anyone who is in sin comes into contact with Jesus Christ, they are forever changed.

It is a sad statement for anyone to suggest that a Christian is completely the same as someone who is in their sin.  Those who are in sin, are unaware of the damage that their behaviors cause because their eyes have not been illuminated by the light of Christ. However, how many times have some Christians been linked to the same exact behavior of an unbeliever or unrepentant sinner?

Those who are truly in Christ would not exhibit the same behaviors of the world but rather there would be a stark contrast. That is because, the one who brings the change is Jesus Christ.  One cannot accept Jesus Christ’s sacrifice in the pardon of their sins and be the same as they were.  That is because, the Holy Spirit begins the process of convicting and drawing you closer to God. It is also a responsibility of each Christian to seek the Lord daily so that the old nature remains dead while the new nature is renewed constantly.

Just like an extreme makeover, our lives become new and transformed when we experience Jesus Christ in His majesty.  The world is constantly seeking ways to find peace, joy, and fulfillment, but it cannot occur aside from Jesus Christ.  God wishes that you know Him and that He knows who you are. However, sin is the dividing line between communion with God.  If you want to experience God’s presence and love, you have an opportunity.  Accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord & Savior is the first step.  Let Him change you into a better person, and you will be amazed at how your life will never be the same.

The Choice is Yours – Your God Given Opportunity

Vending machines have been in existence for quite some time. They are machines that offer the opportunity to choose from an assortment of items.  Generally speaking, these are items to be consumed and enjoyed by the participating customer. The history and concept of the vending machine go as far back as ancient Greece in which a mathematician by the name of Hero, invented a machine to dispense holy water in Egyptian temples. You can read about the full history of the vending machine here. The great thing about the concept and existence of vending machines is that they offer to each user a choice. What you choose to purchase, is completely in your hands.

In addition to being able to choose from a variety of products, God has given each human the opportunity and ability to choose their path in life. This path involves the most important decision that anyone can make, and that is to accept Jesus Christ as their Lord & Savior. The other part of the choice we have been given is to remain in our sinful nature by serving the will of our flesh.

In the book of Joshua Chapter 24, there is an account of a man named Joshua, who was the chosen leader after the death of Moses.  He was given the responsibility of leading the people of Israel to the Promised Land. In chapter 24, Joshua asks the tribes of Israel and Shechem to assemble so that he can give them God’s message and instruction. In verse 2, Joshua says:

(NIV) “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘Long ago your ancestors, including Terah the father of Abraham and Nahor, lived beyond the Euphrates River and worshiped other gods.” 

Notice that God makes a statement of the Israelite’s ancestors who were worshiping other gods. Based on the lineage of the Israelites, there were those who were committing idolatry by turning away from the one and True God to serve other gods. In verses 3-4 Joshua continues by saying:

(NIV) “But I took your father Abraham from the land beyond the Euphrates and led him throughout Canaan and gave him many descendants. I gave him Isaac, and to Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau. I assigned the hill country of Seir to Esau, but Jacob and his family went down to Egypt.” 

If you read further through the verses of 5-13, you will see that there were many accounts of God’s faithfulness to the people of Israel.  It was because of the obedience and allegiance unto God by individuals such as Abraham, Moses and even those after, that God spared and rescued the Israelites out of peril. In verses 5-13, God spoke through Joshua making it clear that it was because of the Israelite’s obedience, that they had experienced favor with God.

However, notice what Joshua says in verses 14-15:

(NIV) “Now fear the Lord and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your ancestors worshiped beyond the Euphrates River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”

Why does Joshua tell the Israelites to throw away the gods of their ancestors? In verse 23, Joshua says, “throw away the foreign gods that are among you and yield your hearts to the Lord, the God of Israel.” Basically, this is pointing to the fact that at some point, the Israelites began to worship the same gods that their ancestors did, which was blatant idolatry. Joshua gives a warning of what will happen if the Israelites choose not to be in full allegiance unto God:

Verse 20:

(NIV) “If you forsake the Lord and serve foreign gods, he will turn and bring disaster on you and make an end of you, after he has been good to you.” 

The whole point of this scripture is to show that the Israelites were given two options. They could choose to worship God only and forsake their idols, or they could revert to the actions of their ancestors by engaging in idol worship. As Joshua said in this passage of scripture, there would be consequences for choosing other gods.  However, the alternative to following after the God of Israel was a continued hand of favor from God as they had experienced in their years of battle against their enemies. However, Joshua also uses a pivotal phrase in verse 15 which says, “choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve.”

The thing about God is that He has and continues to give humanity a choice. This is akin to having free-will which is to say that we can choose what we will do and who we will serve. The reason why God allowed humanity to have free-will was so that we would freely choose Him as Lord, over any other god. A love that is demanded or forced is not true love and does not encompass the act of free-will.  God desires that we choose Him over the desires of our flesh.

For example, in the Garden of Eden, God gave Adam & Eve a choice. That choice was to obey His commands or to eat of the fruit on the tree of the Knowledge of Good & Evil.  They were given a choice so that they themselves would freely choose to love God or to embrace sin. That is the same opportunity that you and I have today.  Like a vending machine, we all have choices in life.  We can choose to live in our sin and reject God’s love, or we can choose to embrace God and experience His love.

The Bible says in 2 Peter 3:9, that God wishes that no man would perish.  It isn’t God’s will that you and I experience eternal damnation in Hell.  Instead, God offered an alternative in the person of Jesus Christ, to redeem humanity. Many have and will continue to reject this gift of life, but it will be a choice that is made. It does not negate the opportunity for redemption, but it only means that the path to living in disobedience and sin has been chosen.

Of course, because you are still alive, there is an opportunity to choose God through Jesus Christ. The Bible also says in Romans 1:20 the following:

(NIV) “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities–his eternal power and divine nature–have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.”

This scripture means, that the evidence of God and His love is all around us. You can see His existence in the nature that was made by Him and not by man. You can see God, even in the very air that we breathe which is supplied by God Himself. There are many signs that God has made available to us, which means that in the end we will not have an excuse for choosing other gods to worship instead of the one and True God.

The fact is that God desires to know you and to be known. Just as Joshua gave the Israelites an option, God gives us an option.  The majority of the world will choose satan and the ways of the flesh. However, there will be those that will choose Christ and salvation. Will you be one those that choose Jesus Christ? If you haven’t accepted Christ as your Lord & Savior, you have an opportunity. Life becomes more joyous and orderly when you are in relationship with Jesus Christ.  The choice is yours. Choose who you will serve today.

Do Not Worry – Trusting in God Despite Your Surroundings

If there is one thing that we as humans have in common, it is that of economic security. Regardless of what country you come from, or what your social status is – we all need a form of currency to sustain our day-to-day lifestyle. Essentially, currency is a way to barter or seek an exchange for products that we may need or want. It is such an important part of our lives, that whenever there are threats to our economic stability, panic begins to ensue.

For example, in recent news, the government of Greece has sought its 3rd bailout in 6 years. The current amount owed on the Greek National debt is at a staggering 242.8 billion in Euros.  As a result, Greece is in the process of negotiating with the European Union to avoid a default which would mean bankruptcy.  However, such negotiations have stalled, leaving Greek citizens in a debilitating state.

The crisis in Greece hasn’t exactly been isolated in terms of its effects.  China is now reporting a decline in its economy as a result of the crisis in Greece, which may even mean that other countries could feel the ripple effect.  Many are looking at this crisis and are worried about their own livelihood. Questions such as, “What will this mean for my retirement?” and “Will my country’s economy be affected?” are being asked by many worldwide.  The fact is, the world is intertwined economically, which means that if one major country falters, others will follow.  You might read this, and you too may be worried.

However, in Matthew Chapter 6, verses 25-34, Jesus is teaching His Disciples by admonishing them not to worry.  He starts off in verses 25-27 by saying:

(NIV) “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?”

One of the interesting things about what Jesus references in these verses is, the example of nature.  Basically, Jesus mentions the birds of the air and He points to the fact that God provides for the birds. Have you ever seen a bird providing for itself?  In your time, it is likely that you have not. That is because, birds are unable to provide for themselves. Which means, that God provides in various ways for the birds since they are incapable of doing so on their own.

What Jesus wants you and I to understand is that we should not worry about our lives. Instead, Jesus is teaching the concept of trusting in God and understanding that He will provide for us. Jesus says at the end of verse 26, “Are you not much more valuable than they?” This is to say, that if God can provide for the birds of the air, He can certainly provide for you, regardless of what your needs are.

He then goes on to say, “Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?” The thing about worrying is, it is a useless condition to exist in. Worrying only leads to panic, which creates discomfort in your mind and body. While in our humanity, we react to various situations, we must realize that living in worry and fear detracts from our trust in God and what He is capable of doing.  So, rather than living in worry and fear, we should grasp the condition of absolute trust which is to lean on God’s ability and not our own. 

In verses 31-32, Jesus says:

(NIV) “So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.”

Jesus says that we should not worry for material things or even the things we are in need of. He even goes on to say that the “pagans run after these things,” which essentially means that the world operates in worry, fear, and panic. Those in the world seek after materialistic means to satisfy and build their hopes upon. If you were to turn on your local or national news, you would find that much of what is reported is negative. Buzz words such as “Breaking news” and other terms that are used,capture our attention. However, much of what is reported doesn’t inspire or produce hope. Most of what the media spews is hopelessness and fear.  As a result, we who watch begin to operate out of the fear that was disposed upon us.

Those who are not in Christ put their hope in the ever fallible and weakening world system.  Many who are not anchored in God, have sought the words of their politicians, or the value of their economic currency.  While at the same time we can see the very plight that is occurring in just about every nation concerning government and the global economy. Those who put their trust in a decaying world system will find themselves in despair and without hope.

However, Jesus says that “your heavenly Father knows that you need them,” meaning, God already knows what you and I are in need of.  If you are trusting in Him wholeheartedly, then you will experience what Philippians 4:19 says, which is that God shall supply all of our needs according His riches and glory in Christ Jesus. That is the hope that we have.

Jesus ends this chapter by saying:

(NIV) “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” 

The condition that Jesus gives here is that if we seek God’s Kingdom first, then everything that we need and desire will be given unto us. Seeking God’s Kingdom means to first, give your life to Christ. If you have not done so, then you have an opportunity to receive Christ in the pardon of your sins.  Then, once you are in Christ, you must begin by living in your God-given purpose which ties into elevating the Kingdom of God.

Finally, Jesus ends with the words, “do not worry about tomorrow.” Have you ever found yourself in fear or worried about your future? Jesus says that we should not worry about tomorrow, because for one, God already knows what we are in need of.  Secondly, every day has its own responsibilities.  Our future is in God’s hands, which means that He knows the beginning to the end.

Regardless of what the media says, or what your own life may look like, God knows where you are. Worrying only gives power to your enemy who is satan. He knows that if you concentrate on all of the negativity, then you will hinge your hopes on finding a human solution. Attempting to solve problems by human means results in confusion and an increase in chaos. The proof in that is, that we have various issues worldwide while global leaders are attempting to solve them in their own power. It doesn’t work without seeking God for the answers.

We should be aware of our reality and the world around us, but we are not to worry about what occurs.  Simply because, God can and will protect those who are hidden in Him.  Are you trusting in God with your life? Seek the Lord, and find out what it is like to live in His security.
