Most of us know what it is like to have a friendship or even a romantic relationship as it relates to daily personal life. It is the connection to one or more individuals that creates a sense of acceptance, emotional attachment, and intimacy. Only those who are closest to you, have a place reserved in your life as opposed to those who are only acquaintances who would be left standing on the outskirts.

It is the relationship and connection with those who are closely held to your heart, that creates a significant bond that is difficult to shatter under negative circumstances. In such relationships that are built, there is a commonality in addition to understanding one another. However, if one does not maintain a steady connection with those who are deemed important, there is a great potential for a loss of said connection which means the relationship no longer thrives.

As a result, any relationship whether familial, friendly, or romantic begins to suffer from a breakdown which can ultimately lead to a relational demise. This means that in order for one to have relationships that are built to thrive, there must be a continual connection and growth in each interpersonal relationship.

In the book of John chapter 8, the principle of knowing God through Jesus Christ is shown in verses 12 – 19. Jesus is speaking to Pharisees who were religious individuals who believed that life was better lived according to the Mosaic law rather than deviating from the law. Throughout scripture, the Pharisees can be seen challenging Jesus on various issues, however, Jesus would always bring them back into accountability and God’s truth.

Verses 12-13 in John chapter 8 says the following:

(NLV) “Jesus spoke to all the people, saying, “I am the Light of the world. Anyone who follows Me will not walk in darkness. He will have the Light of Life.”The proud religious law-keepers said to Him, “You are talking about Yourself. What You say about Yourself is not true.”

In verse 13, the Pharisees challenge Jesus regarding His statement that He is the Light of the world. One reason as to why the Pharisees misunderstood and believed Jesus to be a liar is because they were so caught up in their allegiance to the Mosaic law. The scripture in this translation refers to the Pharisees as “proud religious law-keepers.” This suggests that the Pharisees were arrogant and they bought into the lie that religion was superior to following the words of Christ.

Even in our world today, there are many who have placed much emphasis on worldly knowledge and human wisdom that there isn’t a reverence for the things of God. There are religious zealots who proclaim that what they believe is the truth, however, anything that stands outside of the truth of Jesus Christ is following in step with satan’s deceptions. The proof of this is that Jesus says in verse 12 that anyone who follows Him will not walk in darkness.

This means, that without Christ one cannot live in this life and navigate successfully because only Jesus is the light by which we have guidance to the path that God desires for humanity. Regardless of other religions or even those whose choose not to believe, Jesus Christ is the only way, the only truth, and the only way to life. (John 14:6)

Jesus continues in the next few verses:

Verses 14-17:

(NLV) “Jesus said, Even if I speak of Myself, what I am saying is true. I know where I came from and where I am going. You do not know where I came from or where I am going. You say as a man would say if people are guilty or not guilty. I am not saying anyone is guilty. But even if I did, it would be true. I am not alone. The Father Who sent Me is with Me. It is written in your Law that when two men agree about something, it proves it is true. I speak for Myself and the Father Who sent Me speaks for Me.”

Essentially, Jesus further states to the Pharisees that He is speaking the truth, but His truth is validated by God Almighty. Jesus says that He speaks for Himself, but it is God the Father who sent Jesus and speaks for Him. This makes it so that Jesus’ words are the final authority because it is God who has given Him the authority to speak with such truth.

However, notice that Jesus says in verse 14 that the Pharisees do not know where Jesus came from or where He is going. Verse 19 says:

(NLV) “The proud religious law-keepers asked Him, “Where is Your Father?” Jesus said, “You do not know Me or My Father. If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also.”

Jesus’ words make it clear that the Pharisees did not have a relationship with Jesus Christ. As John 14:6 states, Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. Without a relationship with Jesus, there isn’t a way to have a relationship with God the Father. The Pharisees did not know Christ in obedience or in following Him, which is why they never understood Christ’s words. If they were followers of Christ, then they would have known God for themselves.

The question that all of us must answer is whether or not, we know Jesus for ourselves. With all of the deception that exists in our world, it is very easy to think that one can have true peace, joy and understand love without knowing Jesus Christ. It is Christ who gives us the opportunity to know God because Christ is the only way to God.

The world we live in promotes all inclusive religion. One can worship Buddha or Allah and it still lead back to the same source. However, this notion is false and it is one of the many lies that satan uses to distort the clarity that God offers. Without having a relationship with Jesus Christ, then there is a loss in connection to God the Father.

God desires to know each human being in intimacy. Sin is what separates us from having an unhindered relationship with God. It was God’s plan that Jesus Christ would die on the cross as the atonement for the world’s sins. Without the shedding of Christ blood, there would be no other way to remove the stain of sin. There would also be a relational gap between humanity and God.

This means that because of Christ, we have an opportunity to know God. However, it takes a decision to know God through Jesus Christ. How do you do this? The first step is to come to the acknowledgement that you are a sinner and need a savior. If you don’t know Jesus Christ in the pardon of your sins, then you are living in sin. Once you have acknowledged that you are a sinner, and you have repented from your sin and turned away from your sin, it begins the process of a relationship with Christ.

For those of us who are in Christ, we must seek God daily through prayer, reading scripture, and worship. To know God is to have an ongoing and intimate relationship with Christ. It doesn’t just happen overnight as some may believe. Just like any human relationship, it takes time to experience growth and connection. The more you spend time with God, the more you begin to know Him and the more your life exemplifies who God is.

It is only through Christ that we are able to show love to a dying world, and to give sinners an opportunity the receive the invitation to know God through Christ. Regardless of what our world promotes today, the overarching truth is that Jesus is the only way to have everlasting life. He is the only way to know what love is, and how to love others. Do you know Jesus?

 

 

Start 2016 by Committing Your Ways to the Lord

2015 has now passed and it is in the book of history. Today is the beginning of a brand new year for all of us who were given an opportunity to see the turn of another season in life. This is a time in which many will start the year by establishing New Year’s resolutions. For some it may mean losing weight, becoming fiscally responsible, or it may mean accomplishing other personal goals that were not achieved in 2015.

However, in the midst of the busyness of this new year, it is important for all of us to understand that the best way to start and to finish each year is to commit our ways unto the Lord. This is a message for both the Christian and the non-Christian. For those of us who are in Christ, the Bible makes it clear throughout many scriptures that our focus should be to seek the Lord in all that we do. This, in turn, means that our lifestyle will be pleasing unto Him as we live and walk by the Holy Spirit.

For those of you who are not in Christ, this is an open invitation for you to be redeemed through the blood of Jesus Christ by simply believing in your heart that Jesus is Lord. It also means that you must repent of your sins which begins the process of transforming your life from condemnation to redemption. The key is understanding that without Christ, your life is destined for destruction. However, Jesus died so that you would have life and have it abundantly.

The scripture that we should all focus on for daily guidance is that of Proverbs 16:3 which says:

(NLT) “Commit your actions to the LORD, and your plans will succeed.”

There are many who will have their own plans and goals for the new year, but the writer who is King Solomon encourages the reader to commit their ways or actions to the Lord. Why does King Solomon admonish us to do this? As the second part of verse 3 says, your plans will succeed.

The world often defines success based on monetary gain or even having material wealth. While there is nothing inherently wrong with having wealth, that does not define success in the eyes of God. What God is concerned with is whether or not you and I have surrendered our lives unto Him. Solomon says to commit your works or actions to the Lord.

By committing your actions to the Lord, you are first acknowledging God as Lord. This means He has free reign in your life. Many in our world today have forsaken God and traded in obedience for an aversion to secular humanism which is rooted in pride. By nature, we are prideful because of being born into sin.

However, the opposite of pride is humility which means to place yourself in a position where you are no longer in control. In this case, to be humbled under the hand of God is to admit that you need Him to succeed in this life. It also means that you are willing to act in submission unto God by choosing His ways over your own ways.

To commit your actions unto the Lord is to also reject sin regardless of the form it comes in. When you and I are in sin, we are operating in rebellion against God which means we are unable to commit our ways unto the Lord. However, repenting and turning away from your sin, you are then able to experience the fullness of God and everything that He has planned for you.

Proverbs 3:6 says:

(ESV) “In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”

What God desires from each of us is submission and acknowledgement. However, to do so, a choice must be made. In this coming year and every single day, there will be challenges as well as personal victories. Throughout our lives, God wants to have dominion so that He can show us the path that we should take. Having goals that you desire to accomplish is admirable.

At the same time, our goals should be aligned with God’s will so that He can direct us as we journey through life. 2015 was a year in which our world witnessed many tragedies at the hands of terrorists and criminals. It was a year that showed the very evil that satan represents. However, the safest place that anyone can be is in God through Jesus Christ.

The fact is that 2016 may very well show forth more violence and evil because according to Matthew chapter 24, we are living, in the End Times. Such things that include Earthquakes, violence, wars and rumors of wars must take place. Prophetically, the issues we see in our world must occur for Jesus Christ to return for His church.

However, it is the person whose life is anchored in Christ and who has decided to commit their actions unto the Lord who will benefit. God desires to know you and me through Jesus Christ. It is up to you to decide whether or not you will surrender your life. Surrender is never easy because it involves the destruction of your pride.

Today is the 1st day of 2016 which means all of us have an opportunity to start at the beginning. However, will you choose to do so without the guidance of God? In such dangerous times, no one can afford to live without Jesus Christ. To do so is taking a chance and that chance will ultimately lead to destruction.

Let your new year start off with Jesus at the center of your life. New Year’s resolutions come and go, however, a life that starts each year and each day with God at the helm is a life that is destined for success. You don’t have to live each day without the presence and guidance of God. Jesus died on the cross to save the world, which means the invitation is open to whoever desires.

Do you know Jesus in the pardon of your sins? Don’t  enter  this new year without accepting Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Our world continues to erode both morally and spiritually, however, the answer to the woes of this world is Jesus Christ. Let your life be committed to God which will always result in success. May 2016 not only be a happy new year but also a new year that involves submission and commitment to God and His will for your life.

Run the Race and Finish Strong

However, the belief in each person’s heart and mind is that they are able to cross the finish line. There are even those who experience injury and complete exhaustion and yet they push forward until the very end. It is the accomplishment of completing a marathon that matters the most.

Spiritually speaking, we all face our own marathon experience throughout life. Both to the believer and unbeliever, life does not conceal or limit its challenges. However the great news is that with Christ anyone can have an opportunity to run their race with endurance and strength. The offer of guidance and faith is available, even to those who are among the godless.

In the book of Hebrews chapter 12, verses 1-2 says the following:

(NLV) “All these many people who have had faith in God are around us like a cloud. Let us put everything out of our lives that keeps us from doing what we should. Let us keep running in the race that God has planned for us. Let us keep looking to Jesus. Our faith comes from Him and He is the One Who makes it perfect. He did not give up when He had to suffer shame and die on a cross. He knew of the joy that would be His later. Now He is sitting at the right side of God.”

The author of the book of Hebrews remains unknown to this day, however, some believe that the Apostle Paul may have written this book. This book was written to Christians who were experiencing persecution at which the writing of this epistle took place between 65 to 85 A.D.

In verse 1 of this chapter, the writer makes reference to those who had faith in God who surround those in Christ as a cloud. Other translations say a “great cloud of witnesses.” If you read chapter 11 of Hebrews, you will see the individuals who were noted as those who had faith in God. Individuals such as Noah, Enoch, Abraham and Sarah were known to have been enshrined in what is known as the ‘Hall of Faith.’

However, the admonishment from the writer is to Christians to first, put aside everything that creates an impediment. Some translations use the word ‘sin’ in order to make the point of obedience and surrender unto God. This writer makes this point because if we who are in Christ are going to please God, we must first rid ourselves of the sin in our life.

This means, that we must seek God for forgiveness and allow the Holy Spirit to cleanse us of all unrighteousness. Believe it or not, sin can be a hindrance to you because it creates a separation between you and God. We are unable to adequately accomplish great things for God as long as we have allowed sin to flourish and have a residence in our life.

In verse 1 the writer continues by saying that we must run in the race that God has planned for us. Other translations say to “run the race with patience.” In any case, all of us have a race or a path that God has carved out for us to run. Your path is different from my path, but God has designed a race specifically for you. The key is that we must run the race and do so with patience.

Sometimes, circumstances arise in life that has the potential to cause you to quit. However, the encouragement is not to quit but to run through the process. The writer also says in verse 2 that we are to look unto to Jesus. This means that when we are facing fiery trials, we must keep our eyes focused on Christ.

Regardless of how difficult a season may be, the key is to look to the Lord because He is your strength even when you have none left. Verse 2 continues when it says, “Our faith comes from Him and He is the One Who makes it perfect.” Faith comes when our lives are surrendered to God. Our job is to believe, but it is God who increases our faith if we believe that He is able to accomplish anything we are seeking Him for.

Our faith is also perfected and sharpened as we continue to live in obedience unto Christ. The final part of verse 2 makes note of Jesus Christ and the cross. The writer is essentially saying that Jesus did not give up when he faced shame and even death on the cross. Rather, Jesus understood that the victory would be won if He was obedient even unto death. As the scripture points out in the last portion, now Jesus is sitting at the right hand of God.

This essentially means that we who believe and follow Jesus, we too have an opportunity to receive the victory. Anyone can run in a marathon, but to finish and finish strong is what invokes a sense of victory and accomplishment. I have my own race in life that I am running, but I realize that it is through my faith in God and obedience unto Him, that I am able to accomplish all things through Christ as Philippians 4:13 says.

It may be tempting for you to give up, and perhaps you have contemplated it. Maybe you are experiencing a difficult situation in your life and you want to quit. The message is to you, and that message is to look to Jesus for your faith and strength. Jesus Christ is the Rock and He is the one who will give you the endurance to finish and finish strong.

Those who give up, forfeit their inheritance and their blessing. The writer encourages us as Christians to walk in righteousness and to turn to Jesus for our faith. If you don’t know Jesus as your personal Lord & Savior, then you are running the race without guidance. You too have a race to run, but God wants you to run with Him and on His path.

Accept Christ’s gift of life by acknowledging your sin and by believing that He died on the cross. By accepting Jesus into your life, you are able to run this race with God’s help. All of us must run this race and finish strong. You and I are able to do so only through Jesus Christ.

The Gift for Every Day – Jesus Christ

December 25 is a day in which many around the world, celebrate the holiday that is known as ‘Christmas.’ On this day, millions gather to exchange gifts and to spend time with family and friends. This is a day that Christians and non-Christians have set aside time to engage in festivities that involve decorations and consuming a holiday dinner. It is a time that has been marked by togetherness and creating memories that will last a lifetime.

However, there is a much deeper meaning to this day. While the world promotes purchasing material things, the truth of the matter is that at the core of Christmas day, it is not about giving or receiving gifts. While this is a nice gesture and it is most certainly encouraged, the true meaning of Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. Christ’s birth marked the beginning of humanity’s opportunity for redemption. It is because of Jesus’ birth, that you and I can be redeemed due to His sacrifice on the cross.

While Christmas day is an important day in the history of our world and all existence, it is paramount that we who are in Christ understand that Christmas day isn’t the only day that we are to celebrate or acknowledge the birth of Christ. Every day is a day that we have the opportunity to commemorate and honor the gift of Jesus Christ.

The prophet Isaiah gives a prophecy that points to the birth of Jesus Christ that would occur many years after the prophecy was given. For example, in Isaiah chapter 7, verse 14, the following prophecy is declared:

(NKJV) “Therefore, the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.”

This prophecy was made between 701 and 681 BC. It was later fulfilled in 5 BC. 700 years later, the words of the prophet Isaiah came to pass. In chapter 9 of Isaiah and verse 6, another declaration is made:

(ESV) “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

It is important to note in the above verse, Isaiah was not only foretelling what would happen, but he was directing his prophecy to King Ahaz and the nation of Judah. At this time period, Judah and its people were afraid of the Northern Kingdom (Jerusalem) and Syria. They were joining together to attack Judah. However, Isaiah prophesies with hope rather than sticking to a gloom and doom perspective.

Essentially, the prophecy of Jesus Christ is one of hope, not only for the people in Isaiah’s day but for future generations. Isaiah said, “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given;” This meant that the prophecy transcended every generation. “To us” meant that the gift of life through Jesus Christ became available to every person regardless of the time they live in.

Even today, the gift of Jesus Christ being born is a gift that is available to you and I. Since the prophecy is toward humanity as a whole, then it includes even those who choose to reject Christ. The fact is that you and I have been given an extraordinary opportunity to be redeemed through the bloodshed of Jesus Christ. While Christmas is a day that many celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, it is not to be relegated to one day.

Every day should be a day to recognize the birth of Jesus Christ, His death on the cross, and His resurrection. The key is understanding that Christ being born to die has eternal relevance, especially for those who make the choice to accept this gift of life. Unfortunately, satan has used many distractions through the media to divert the focus of both the believer and non-believer in the attempt to remove the emphasis on Jesus Christ.

If you have seen any advertisements both before, during, and even after Christmas then you may have seen the concerted focus on materialism. We live in a society that does not push the essence of Jesus Christ’s birth, but rather the focus is on what one must have or purchase. However, the key is not the gifts we buy or get for ourselves.

Isaiah makes it clear when he says, “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given;” This suggests that it was God’s plan that Jesus be given for us in order to break the power of sin over humanity. Christmas shouldn’t be solely about the gifts, friends, family, and great food. While these things have their place and are to be cherished, the overwhelming reason for today and every day’s commemoration is to reflect upon the gift that God gave to us through Jesus Christ.

Even to those who adamantly deny God’s existence, or those who choose to live in their sin, Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection is the gift that is available every single day. His sacrifice on the cross is what closes the chasm between our lives in sin and having a relationship with God. Every Christmas is indeed another reminder that we should be thankful for what we have, but the overarching theme is Jesus Christ.

The world will not elevate the name of Jesus because those who live independently of God are not open to the things of the Holy Spirit. However, when you receive Christ as your Lord & Savior, Christmas and every day begins to take on a new meaning. Christ died for the sinner and the saint. He died for you regardless of what your past or present circumstance is.

However, while the death of Jesus Christ gives us the opportunity to be free from our sin, it is the individual choice we must make to be redeemed. Those who choose to remain in darkness are operating out of condemnation, however, redemption is reserved for those who desire to be made whole and set free.

Do you know Jesus Christ as your personal Savior? Perhaps you celebrated Christmas with friends, family, and you exchanged gifts – and yet your life was and is missing the most important part and that is Christ. It isn’t too late to receive Jesus Christ as Lord & Savior. Many celebrate Christmas with religiosity and tradition, and yet their lives are devoid of the one who can truly give them life and meaning.

Jesus wants to give you life through His sacrifice, but it is up to you. The world continues to prompt us to focus on materialism and aspects of life that are temporal. However, eternal life through Christ is what will last. Choose life today by choosing Jesus. His gift of life is available not just on Christmas day, but every day. God’s gift is available to you if you are willing to accept it.

God – The Place of Safety During a Time of Peril

Over the last month, our world has witnessed unspeakable tragedies at the hands of terrorists who desired to kill innocent civilians. One of the major tragedies which took place was in Paris France. On November 13th, 130 people were killed in multiple locations by those who had a connection to the terrorist organization called ISIS. In addition to this tragedy, there were other terrorist attacks that occurred shortly after in Africa. Boko-Haram which is another terrorist group also claimed the lives of innocent civilians.

The last few weeks has been a trying time for many worldwide. After such death took place, many continued to ponder why, and how such atrocities could occur. Our world is seemingly experiencing a quagmire of events, but the question on the minds of many is, ‘Is there hope?’ Is our world so broken and divided that hope cannot be found? The answer to that question can be found in the book of Psalms, chapter 91.

Based on historical accounts and commentaries, it is unclear as to whether or not this Psalm was written by a man named Moses or if it was written by the Psalmist David. However, it is believed that David was the writer of this chapter. In this passage, the writer is proclaiming the very safety and sanctuary that God provides to those who are in a relationship with Him. This period of scripture was written during a time of pestilence and great despair.

Verses 1-4:

(NLV) “He who lives in the safe place of the Most High will be in the shadow of the All-powerful. I will say to the Lord, “You are my safe and strong place, my God, in Whom I trust.” For it is He who takes you away from the trap, and from the killing sickness. He will cover you with His wings. And under His wings you will be safe. He is faithful like a safe-covering and a strong wall. “

In the first verse the writer says, that the person who lives in the safe place of the Most High will be in the shadow of the All-powerful. Essentially, this means that anyone who lives or abides in God through Jesus Christ shall be hidden under the safety and presence of Almighty God. The way of the world is to operate in fear and dismay. That isn’t to say that you and I do not experience moments of concern or that we are never afraid.

However, the key is that when your life is hidden in God through Jesus Christ, then you are no longer vulnerable nor are you fearful. The reason is because it is God who is the one who is your place of refuge. The media has become prolific in pushing satan’s agenda of fear. Satan understands that if he can create an atmosphere of fear, then he will cripple those who are open and willing to listen.

Instead, the Psalmist encourages us to trust in the Lord who is the one who is our place of safety. However, the only way that you can experience God’s provision is by having a relationship with Jesus Christ. In doing so, you will live or abide in the presence of God when you are living in submission unto Him.

Verses 5-7 continues by impressing the point of living in reliance upon God and not being afraid. The essence of these verses is that God will protect those who have chosen to abide in Him. Verse 7 points out that there will be those around you who may befall destruction, but if you are in God through Christ then you will be in a safe position.

Verses 8-10:

(NLV) “You will look on with your eyes, and see how the sinful are punished. Because you have made the Lord your safe place, and the Most High the place where you live, nothing will hurt you. No trouble will come near your tent.”

Verse 8 is clear that those who are sinful or have chosen not to live in God through Christ will receive their due judgment. In these dangerous times, it is paramount that we find ourselves living in God and also living for Him. The fact is that the escalation of sin in our world has made it increasingly necessary to be found in the safety of the Lord. Without Him, your life is left open to the tactics and snares of the enemy.

However, the scripture says in verse 9 that those who have made God their place of safety will be covered under God’s protection. The key is remembering that if you live outside of the parameters of God, then you are open to anything that may occur. It is the person who lives a life that is anchored in sin, who will suffer the consequences.

The above scripture is not to be taken to mean that a person who is in Christ will never experience trouble. Since we are all human, we will all face challenges and times of trouble. However, the meaning of verse 9 is to suggest that you will be spared from destruction rather than overtaken by it.

Verses 11-13 further establishes what the Psalmists suggests which is that God will protect those who are in Him. Verse 11 says that God’s angels will watch over those who trust in the Lord. Verses 12-13 continue by pointing to the ability that we who are in Christ have to overcome difficult and troubling situations.

This chapter closes with final words of encouragement in verses 14-16:

(NLV) “Because he has loved me, I will bring him out of trouble. I will set him in a safe place on high because he has known my name. He will call upon me, and I will answer him. I will be with him in trouble. I will take him out of trouble and honor him. I will please him with long life. And I will show him my saving power.”

Once again, the last verses confirm the notion that even those of us who are Christians will experience troubling situations. However, the promise is that God will deliver us out of perilous occurrences. Notice the words, “because he has known my name.” This is meant to denote that there is a relationship between God and an individual.

There are many who call on God’s name in the time of trouble, but yet they are not saved. The reason is because God does not recognize a person who hasn’t given their life to Jesus Christ. It is when you surrender your life to Christ that God recognizes you and that you can have a relationship with Him. Only those who have chosen to follow Jesus Christ will be those who are hidden in God’s safety.

Do you know Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior? If not, then today is the best day for redemption. The world that we are living in is becoming more sinful and it is more dangerous than ever before. Rather than being in a state of vulnerability, it is more beneficial to accept Christ as your savior by confessing your sins. Then you must turn from your sinfulness and live a life in righteousness and obedience. If you desire safety in these dangerous times, then reach out to Jesus Christ and accept Him. God wants to be your place of safety.

The Testing of Your Faith – Coal into Diamonds

ID-100147870Many of us, when we look at a diamond we are amazed at its beauty and the precious nature that comes with beholding such an element. While we may marvel at the beauty of the diamond itself, the fact is that there is a process that occurs to produce such splendor. In the scientific world, elements are often discussed as it relates to the world that we live in and how matter is formed. As it relates to a diamond, the original form is in the existence of ‘coal.’

Scientifically speaking, coal and diamonds are essentially the same, however, coal contains more impurities compared to its 2nd form which is that of a diamond. Coal is made up of mostly carbon which means that it is not pure. It has been discovered that coal originates from decaying plants, fungi, and bacteria. So, in its essence coal is grossly impure. However, for diamonds to exist, coal must undergo heat and pressure.

When coal is pressurized and heated (usually by temperatures over a thousand degrees), it begins to form a crystalline structure in which we know it to be that of diamonds. However, one key element of this process is that when coal is pressured and heated, it causes the carbon to bond with four other atoms. As a result, the structure converts from its original form to the diamond form that we all know. When coal is formed into the crystalline structure, it not only proves to be that much harder but it contains more purity than its original form.

Have you ever experienced a moment in your life in which you were disappointed by a particular outcome? Perhaps you were hopeful about a matter and yet the result turned out to be negative. The Word of God gives every believer solace and direction as it relates to periods of testing and disappointment. In the book of James Chapter 1, the author who is the Apostle James writes to a nation of Jews at the time. In the first part of this chapter, he encourages fellow believers as they endure moments of testing in their faith.

Verses 2-3:

(NLV) “My Christian brothers, you should be happy when you have all kinds of tests. You know these prove your faith. It helps you not to give up. Learn well how to wait so you will be strong and complete and in need of nothing.”

What James is saying here is that as Christians, we should embrace the fact that we are tested in our faith. As James says, when you and I are tested it proves our faith. It shows God how much we truly trust in Him and how willing we are to endure or have patience throughout our experience. He also says in verse 3 that when we are tested, it helps us not to give up in addition to the fact that it is an opportunity to learn how to wait.

Often, we are tested as a means to show us how to be patient and how to endure through the season of testing. Most of us don’t like it when we are disappointed or when we are in a season of testing, but the fact is that everyone experiences it at some point in their life. The question is, ‘Will you allow the periods of testing to make you stronger and build you in your faith?’ As James says, we should learn how to wait or be patient so that we are strong and complete, wanting nothing.

The key is understanding that testing produces strength and faith as long as we are allowing God to shape us in the process. Just like coal is impure before it is pressurized and heated, our lives are not necessarily as pure or righteous as God wants before he allows us to be tested. It is the time of testing that begins to shape our lives so that God can be glorified, and so that we gain strength and a new perspective. Such moments of testing also serve to purify our lives of sin and habits that are antithetical to who God wants us to be.

Verses 5-8:

(NLV) “If you do not have wisdom, ask God for it. He is always ready to give it to you and will never say you are wrong for asking. You must have faith as you ask Him. You must not doubt. Anyone who doubts is like a wave which is pushed around by the sea. Such a man will get nothing from the Lord. The man who has two ways of thinking changes in everything he does.”

Sometimes, when we are experiencing a trial or a test of our faith it is easy to doubt. Disappointment can lead to depression, which can also involve a heavy dose of doubt. Perhaps you were hopeful about a particular job that would have meant a higher salary. You prayed about it, trusted God for the opportunity, only to find that you were not chosen for it. Your faith and your perspective become shaken to a point of doubt.

However, it is the person who is reliant upon God who can take the disappointment and put it before God. It doesn’t mean that the feeling of loss is not felt as an emotion because you are human. We all feel a sense of pain and despair when we experience a disappointment. At the same time, a believer who is growing in Christ will see it as an opportunity to allow God to renew their mind and perspective.

As James mentions in verse 8, it is the person who has two ways of thinking who changes in everything he does. What do you believe? Do you trust God even in a moment of disappointment? Is he everything you are in need of even when life does not turn out as you hoped for? The key is to allow God to produce faith and strength in your life through the process of your testing.

Verse 12:

(NLV) “The man who does not give up when tests come is happy. After the test is over, he will receive the crown of life. God has promised this to those who love Him.”

James says that the individual who doesn’t give up when a test comes is happy. This is a hard concept for many, but the fact is a person who puts their trust in God is the person who will remain steady. Again, it doesn’t mean that your emotions will not be affected because we are all human. However, when we take a moment to surrender our emotions and thoughts to God, He will bring us the joy and the peace that we need to move forward.

As James also says in verse 12, that after the test is over, a crown of life will be the reward for those who remains strong in their faith. It is God’s promise to reward us for not giving up both here on Earth and in Heaven. The goal is to allow God to produce patience and faith in your life. Just like coal is pressurized and heated which later produces a stronger and purified structure, our lives are built to do the same.

When we give our lives to Christ and allow Jesus to be our Lord and savior, He leads us in the path of righteousness. No one likes it when the expectation of a dream or a desire is met with a disappointment. However, even when life does not give us what we want at the very moment, it means for one that God has something better in mind for us. Secondly, it is a time to reflect and appreciate the time of testing which increases your strength and faith.

Finally, when you have endured your season of testing, you will be able to say to someone else that God is faithful and that you understand the perspective of the person you are speaking to. Besides the fact that our testing is meant to glorify God and to enhance our lives, one essential part is that our moments of testing also serve as a testimonial to someone else. Others may come to you who have experienced what you did, which means you can give them your own story as you went through the ordeal.

Do you know Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior? God wants to know you, but you must accept Jesus in the pardon of your sins. Jesus died on the cross and rose again for you and I. Even you who may be an unbeliever, you are not immune to the fiery trials and tests of life. However, with God through Jesus Christ you will be empowered to reach success and a higher level of endurance. For those of us who are in Christ, we must stand firm in our faith. Never giving up on the promises of God is what produces strength, endurance and ultimately a resolve that is unshaken. The reward of never giving up will then be given to those of us who stand.

5 Things That You Cannot Change

We live in a global society in which there have been enormous sociological changes. From the institution and even evolution of the internet to the change in how humanity has become more globalized than ever before. The introduction of change is ubiquitous. Such shifts in our society have also included cultural changes related to the embrace of homosexuality, abortion, divorce, lack of marital or relational commitment, and a whole host of other issues.

The reality of our world is that the times that we live in have become altered so that you have the option to ‘invent your own truth.’ This means that what you believe is personal and it is not to infringe upon anyone else. We live in an era of unabashed freedom or at least the term ‘freedom’ is used to justify one’s actions. However, what many in our society fail to realize is that despite all of the social changes, there are moral and even spiritual absolutes. More so spiritually, there are at least five key aspects of life that cannot change:

1. Negative consequences that come with living in sin – The Bible is quite clear when the issue of sin is addressed. The Apostle Paul makes a reference to the consequences of sin in Galatians chapter 6, and verses 7-8. Paul says the following:

(ESV) “Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.”

These two verses make it clear that whatever a person sows, is what they will reap. When a person is constantly sowing to their flesh or living their life in sin, then eventually, their life will reap corruption. Our society is decaying rapidly, both morally and spiritually. Many have been deceived to think that you can embrace the idea of what you deem to be ‘acceptable’ without negative consequences. The fact is, that when you are in unrepentant sin, then you are open to being devoured by satan.

Rather, the alternative is to live a life that is rooted and grounded in Jesus Christ. As the above scripture says, the person who sows to the Spirit, will reap eternal life. This means, by living for Jesus Christ and rejecting sin, you will avoid the negative consequences of sin. The key is recognizing that we cannot change the negative consequences of sin.

2. The judgment of God – Whether the judgment of God occurs here on the Earth or after you and I pass away, every person will be judged for what they do. God’s judgment is final, regardless of what we think or how much we may balk against it. When God brings judgment upon a nation, it usually means that those within the nation have lived in wickedness.

Concerning God’s judgment, John 3:18 says the following:

(ESV) “Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.”

The fact is that anyone who is not in Christ and does not follow His commands is condemned. Our world continues to promote sin while at the same time the judgment that God will bring is unavoidable for those who choose to live in disobedience and according to their fleshly desires. However, it is the person who believes that Jesus Christ is Lord and has accepted Him as Lord and Savior, they will be the individual who escapes the wrath of God.

Despite how much we as humans believe that we are in control, we cannot change the judgment that will fall as it relates to those who embrace wicked behavior. The answer however, is to accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior which is the way to avoid condemnation.

3. The authority of God – In the age of secular humanism, there has been a concerted effort to elevate human ability which is akin to attempting to ‘be God’ or ‘be a god.’ The fact is that we as humans are limited in our abilities. Despite the constant push for deciding one’s own fate, and being ‘the captain of one’s own ship’ the immutable reality is that God is the ultimate authority.

In Genesis chapter 11, verses 1-9 tells the story of ‘The Tower of Babel.’ In this scripture, it is recorded that humanity at one point decided to build a tower that would reach high to the heavens. In pursuit of such a feat, the people began in their quest to achieve greatness. However, the scripture shows us that eventually God confused the language of the people who attempted to build their tower.

The reason was because the people wanted to assert their own authority aside from God Himself. They were idolatrous because they attempted to serve and elevate themselves. In today’s time, we are living among many who have made themselves to be as God in terms of authority. However, God’s authority supersedes anything that humanity can create. Regardless of what we attempt to do, we must answer to God who is both the creator and the ultimate judge.

4. The Truth of God (His Word) – For many centuries, the Word of God has been debated among scholars and even among those who are unbelievers. However, it is the Word of God that remains true and will remain true for eternity. Psalm 119:89 says:

(ISV) “Your word is forever, LORD; it is firmly established in heaven.”

Regardless of how much our world culture changes or even the times we live in changes, it is God’s Word that will never change. Humanity attempts to denounce and even make it seem as if the Bible is ‘outdated’ and ‘old fashioned.’ However, the words that were written were given by the inspiration of God. Since these words come directly from God, then His words are absolute truth. The truth of God cannot be changed because they are concrete.

Even if our world attempts to nullify what God has proclaimed about sin or even eternal life, His Word cannot be stopped or changed. Everything that occurred in the Bible, and every prophetic Word that was written has and is coming to pass. The truth of God’s Word will always remain, even if society tries to discredit or defame the Bible, it will always stand.

5. God’s love – Regardless of our sin or even the choices we make, God’s love is one thing that will never change. It is the sin in our lives and an active participation in it that creates a chasm between God and humanity. His love is never a question, but rather it is whether or not we will be devoted to Him.

Psalm 136:26 says:

(NLV) “Give thanks to the God of heaven, for His loving-kindness lasts forever.”

God loves humanity and desires that we have a relationship with Him through Jesus Christ. It is the love of God that surpasses any other love or figure of love that the world attempts to create. Satan doesn’t want you and I to know God’s great love or to have a relationship with Him. This is why satan uses distractions and lies to put us into a place of separation from God. While the enemy influences us, it is our choice to believe his lies and reject God.

However, God gives each person an opportunity to know Him. His love will never change, which means, as long as you are alive you have an opportunity to know Him. Even if you have made mistakes in your past, God’s love goes beyond what you have done. The question is, will you surrender your life unto Jesus Christ?

If you don’t know Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, then you are in a place of separation from God. The 5 points named are aspects of God that will never change. Our world is fluid and constantly changing, however, God is the only constant that will always exist. Without Him, then you and I are left up to the devices and ways of this world. Accept Christ today, and allow God to show you just how loving and constant He truly is.

Knowing God’s Will for Your Life

ID-100268904When traveling on a freeway or even a residential road, you will at some point see a sign that points you into the direction that you want to go. With each moment of travel there is always a destination, however, it involves making a turn that will put you closer or perhaps further away from where you intend to go. For example, it is easy to miscalculate by turning too soon, or by not turning soon enough.

As a result, you may end up lost or further behind in reaching your destination. There are also moments in which we think that we can get to our ending point in our own way, but it may turn out to be a path that creates a loss in productivity and time. Spiritually speaking, we can travel in a direction that is planned by God, or we can travel in our own direction.

If you and I travel in our own direction, it will always lead us astray and we are then no longer in God’s will. How do we know what God’s will is for our lives? A great example of this can be found in the book of Genesis. Chapter 15 is where the Lord gives Abraham a promise which is that Abraham would be the Father of many nations.

It was promised in verses 4-5 of chapter 15. Abraham (whose name was originally Abram) is one of the great Biblical Patriarchs who God would use in order to establish the line that Jesus Christ would later come through. However, in the first portion of chapter 15, God says the following to Abraham:

Verses 1-3:

(NLV) “After these things, the word of the Lord came to Abram in a special dream, saying, “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your safe place. Your reward will be very great.” Then Abram said, “O Lord God, what will You give me? For I have no child. And the one who is to receive what belongs to me is Eliezer of Damascus.” Abram said, “Because You have not given me a child, one born in my house will be given all I have.””

It is clear in these verses, that Abraham’s concern or desire was to have a child at some point. Abraham also states that all of his belongings would be given to Eliezer who was already within Abraham’s house. Eliezer was a relative of Abraham.This meant that by default, Eliezer would be granted an inheritance despite the fact that he is not Abraham’s biological son.

God then makes a promise to Abraham in verses 4-6:

Verses 4-6:

(NLV) “Then the word of the Lord came to him, saying, “This man will not be given what is yours. But he who will come from your own body will be given what is yours.” He took him outside and said, “Now look up into the heavens and add up the stars, if you are able to number them.” Then He said to him, “Your children and your children’s children will be as many as the stars.” Then Abram believed in the Lord, and that made him right with God.”

Essentially, it was God’s will that Abraham have offspring because God had promised it. In verse 6 it says that Abraham then believed what God had told him, and it put him in the correct standing with God. The principle to be gained from verse 6 is that when we hear what God has promised us, and we accept it as His will for our life, then we are in the right position to be blessed by God.

However, we will see later in the book of Genesis that there is a scheme to circumvent God’s original plan for a child. In chapter 16, Abraham laments the position that he is in as it relates to not having an heir. In this chapter, Sarah, Abraham’s wife (whose original name was Sarai) is introduced in verse 1.

It is because of Abraham’s lack of an heir and the fact that Sarah had not borne a child that Sarah decided to come up with her own plan. Chapter 16 indicates that Sarah decided that it would be best for her maid or servant Hagar to bear the child that Abraham and Sarah desired.

Abraham agrees with Sarah, and eventually Hagar gives birth to a child who is named ‘Ishmael.’ Once again, it wasn’t God’s will for Abraham to have an heir through anyone else but his wife Sarah. If you look at chapter 17 in verse 16, God specifically says that a child will be born from Sarah’s womb. However, Abraham hearing God’s promise that he and Sarah would bear a son laughs to himself. Notice the exchange between Abraham and God in verses 17-19:

(NLV) “Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed. He said to himself, “Will a child be born to a man who is 100 years old? Then Abraham said to God, “If only Ishmael might live before You!” But God said, “No, but your wife Sarah will give birth to your son. And you will give him the name Isaac. I will make My agreement with him and for his children after him, an agreement that will last forever. “

The point to be made is that God’s will is not only perfect, but His will can be known if we are truly seeking to please Him. The problem with Abraham and Sarah is that they did not align themselves with God’s will. In their case, it was due to unbelief that God had the supernatural power to grant them a son even as they were both approaching the age of 100.

You and I can understand God’s will for our life by listening to God for His will and His direction. This is what Abraham and Sarah failed to do. While they both heard what God had promised, neither were willing to surrender or adhere to God’s proclamation. Thus, it caused a setback for Sarah and Abraham because they lost time in the process of attempting to solve the problem on their own.

When you desire to know God’s will for your life, you must be willing to obey His commands, which means that you are willing to follow. Regardless of how strange or erroneous God’s will may sound to you, it is imperative to take His word over your own desires. When you do so, you will find that the outcome of your obedience is fruitful and time will not be wasted.

Secondly, you can know God’s will by hearing the voice of others in your life who are operating out of godly wisdom. God will often use others to confirm what His will is for your life. Even in the Bible, there were instances in which an Angel sent from God would deliver a message to a specific individual. Usually, the message concerned the person’s destiny or proclamation that God had spoken over their life. So, there will be times in which God will give prophetic words through someone else, and they may be unlikely.

A final way that we can understand God’s will is through God’s peace. There is peace that surpasses all understanding when we are in His will. Whenever you are doing something outside of God’s will there is conflict. One example in the passage concerning Sarah and Abraham involves Hagar. In verse 4 of chapter 16, the Bible says that when Hagar saw that she was pregnant with Abraham’s child, she began to hate Sarah.

Hagar was Sarah’s servant, but as a result of Hagar’s hatred, Sarah began to defend herself by creating difficult interactions with Hagar. As a result, Hagar eventually left Sarah. The fact is that Sarah and Abraham’s decision created turmoil which meant there was a lack of peace. This was despite the belief that having a child outside of God’s will would solve the problem. So, it is important for those of us who are following Christ, to recognize the peace that comes from being in God’s will but to also recognize potential chaos that occurs when we do anything apart from God.

Overall, we who are in Christ must be willing to seek the Lord and obey His commands so that we are in His will. When we are insistent upon our own way, then the result is usually negative. The lesson that we can take from Sarah and Abraham is to take God at His word and to allow Him to lead us to the appropriate destination.

For those of you who are not in Christ, you are unable to discern what God’s will is for your life. Perhaps you have your own plan and design that you believe to be the best way to live. The unfortunate part is that any plan that you have outside of God’s will does not and will not lead to success. Success defined in Christ is a life that is lead by the Holy Spirit, which means that you are able to live freely under God and have a life filled with joy.

If you don’t know Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, today is the day to surrender to Christ. Believe in your heart that Jesus died on the cross, and accept Jesus as your Lord, and repent of your sins. In doing so, you will gain the first step to knowing what God’s will is for your life.

When God Gives You a Warning (Part 2) – Consequences of Ignoring a Warning

If you have ever taken the moment to conduct self-reflection, you may have pondered the many aspects of your life that involved a bad decision and its outcome. Perhaps someone warned you not to do or even say something that would ultimately be to your detriment. In haste and blatant defiance, you do the very opposite of what someone suggested that you don’t.

During your period of reflection, you may feel a sense of regret over your life’s choices. All of us can attest to a time in which we were warned not to do something and yet, in our own pride we bypassed a word of wisdom and reason. The consequences of doing so usually meant an unpleasant experience or even a negative impact relating to your life as a whole.

The fact is that when we are warned of a matter and we ignore a heed to avoid a calamity, there will always be a negative consequence. Some believe that by taking a risk and sticking to what is believed to be the best route, that nothing bad will happen. However, more often than not, the decision to ignore a warning results in the reception of a calamity.

In the book of Jeremiah chapter 25, we can see that the prophet Jeremiah is once again speaking to the people of Judah. As mentioned in the previous blog post, Jeremiah along with other prophets had been tasked with telling the nation of Judah to repent and turn from their sinful ways. As the scripture says in verse 4, the prophets who were assigned to relay God’s message, did so over and over again.

In verses 4-6, Jeremiah tells the people of Judah that they have essentially ignored the many messages that were given by the prophets. However, the consequences of such ignorance is displayed in the next few verses of chapter 25.

Verses 7-9:

(NLT) ““But you would not listen to me,” says the Lord. “You made me furious by worshiping idols you made with your own hands, bringing on yourselves all the disasters you now suffer. And now the Lord of Heaven’s Armies says: Because you have not listened to me, I will gather together all the armies of the north under King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, whom I have appointed as my deputy. I will bring them all against this land and its people and against the surrounding nations. I will completely destroy you and make you an object of horror and contempt and a ruin forever.”

In the above verses, God’s message to the people of Judah is clear in that, because of their disobedience, their land would be utterly destroyed. The people of Judah had committed many forms of idolatry in addition to living in rebellion. Essentially, the fate that the nation of Judah suffered was that of destruction at the hands of King Nebuchadnezzar’s military which later resulted in the people of Judah being held captive by the Babylonians for 70 years according to verse 11.

The point is that, the people of Judah not only ignored the many warnings that God had given, but they eventually experienced negative repercussions as a result of it. Whenever God sends a person to warn or relay His message, those who do not obey will always suffer from negative consequences.

This is why our global society is constantly in a state of confusion and degradation. It is because of the rebelliousness and sinful ways of humanity that our world groans. Jesus Christ died on the cross and rose again so that we could be saved from condemnation. In addition to this, God has a standard of Holy living which is predicated upon our obedience unto Him.

When we are obedient and we choose to reject our sinful nature, we are then in the safety of God’s parameters. Satan does not want those who are in sin to understand that wickedness contributes to being in a place of vulnerability. When you are outside of the will of God, you are then open to anything that can and will happen. However, when your life is submitted unto God in obedience, you are no longer vulnerable but you are held in God’s safety.

To ignore a warning is not only unwise but it is allowing your human pride to lead the way to destruction. In our sinful nature, we are all prideful. Pride is what signifies self-sufficiency. It is the mentality that one knows best. Secular humanism does not give credence to God nor does it honor Him. Instead, the secular humanist believes that we as humans are our own god.

However, when a person adheres to this philosophy, the warnings that God gives to us daily are ignored and eventually it leads to a destructive end. Just like the people of Judah were held captive by the Babylonians and also destroyed, the world around us today is showing the same signs of destruction and captivity.

One example of captivity has to do with the growing issue of drug abuse. In America, and even around the world, there is a growing number of cases in which drugs are openly used and abused. Those who fall in that category are captive to the demonic force which satan has deployed. Despite all of the calls for strict drug laws and a reformation of our world system, the fact is that without God, we as humans are left in captivity.

As far as destruction is concerned, we can see the very element of our family structure being destroyed daily. It is because of the choice to embrace homosexuality and even ‘changing your gender’ that we are continuing to see a decline in God’s original order. Even heterosexual couples are seeing the negative effects of divorce for a myriad of reasons.

However, the key is that many warnings have been given over time for humanity to repent and turn back to God. Many prophets, evangelists, and pastors have given God’s Word to the masses for decades. Yet, many choose to ignore the Word of the Lord. With such ignorance, there are consequences. The violence and the eruption of chaos we see is directly tied to the rebellion and choice to ignore God’s warnings.

What is the solution to all of this? The solution is to adhere to God’s warnings by submitting yourself to Jesus Christ. If you don’t know Jesus in the pardon of your sins, God has made a way for you to escape His wrath. God wants to have fellowship with you through Christ, but it can only occur when you have accepted Jesus Christ’s sacrifice. Then you must repent of your sins and turn from your wickedness.

For those of us who are in Christ, we must also be aware that we are not immune to God’s judgment. God desires that we too are obedient and heed His warnings. God loves humanity, because if He did not, then we would not be warned before a looming disaster. Those who are wise and those who are willing will accept God’s warning and turn to Him in repentance.
